Crocodiles(鳄鱼)lay their eggs and leave them under leaves or sand. Baby crocodiles have special sharp teeth with which to break their way out of the shells. Crocodiles only live where it is hot. They are found in India, Australia, Africa and America. They spend most of their time lying around in the mud or the rivers. The crocodiles long powerful tail is used when the animal is swimming. It is also an excellent weapon, because it can be swung with great speed and force. One blow will knock down a man or even a big animal at once. The crocodile is very well protected against its enemies by the hard bony plates which cover most of its body, but because of the way its neck is formed, it cannot turn its head from side to side and so it can only see in front of itself. The crocodile has its teeth cleaned by the crocodile bird. For its food this bird takes the bits left in the crocodiles mouth. This helps the crocodile, which cannot clean its own teeth, for it cannot move its tongue up and down. With its rows of terrible pointed teeth it seizes its food, which may be a fish, an animal, or even a careless human being, and then holds it below the water until it is drown to death. The long-nosed crocodile is shy and timid and because of this, the people of West Africa where it lives, sometimes catch it for food. Many, many centuries ago there were crocodiles in England. We know this because we have found their bones buried far down in the earth on which London is built. But the Britain of today is too cold for them to live in. Crocodiles may grow to over thirty feet in length. When they lie floating in the water, they look like floating tree-trunks and it is often impossible to tell that they are there.

The female crocodile______.

A.buries her eggs

B.sits on her eggs

C.carries her eggs

D.eats her eggs

The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thou sand
connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving, forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as completes as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software(软件)or by altering the architecture but that to will happen.

I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the fi nest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within over power.

In what way can we make a machine intelligent?

A.By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.

B.By working hard for 10 or 20 years.

C.By either properly programming it or changing its structure.

D.By reproducing it.

听力原文:M: Right, I guess you've got some ideas for our product promotion(23).

W: Well, first we must win over the medical circle, so I thought we should launch a campaign in all the specialist medical journals to promote our drugs, antibiotics and so on.

M: Yes, that's a good idea.

W: Then TV commercials.

M: Just a moment, are you sure we're allowed to advertise medicines on TV?

W: Oh yes, provided they are not drugs which need a prescription. You can advertise over- the-counter products. We can get users of our products to recommend them--"Their lotion cured my disease in six days." for example.

M: Now, hold on. It is forbidden to claim any positive cure for a disease. And we mustn't offer any drugs for illness which should be treated by a doctor.

W: Mmm. OK. What about this—a series of full page newspaper ads with the message that most doctors consider our products the best.

M: That depends on whether it's true.

W: Sure it is. But here is another suggestion. We could offer to return the purchase price to anyone who's not satisfied with one of our products (24). It's possible to do that, isn't it?

M: No, I'm afraid not (24). Manufacturers of medical products are not allowed to promise a return of price in their ads.

W: Well, it looks as though I'll have to come up with something else. I never realize the regulations were so rigid (25).

(20)

A.The advertising price of the products.

B.How to develop the quality of the drugs.

C.How to promote their products.

D.HOW to satisfy people with more medicine.

?Read the article below about the central problem of Economics.

?Choose the best word to fill each gap, from A, B, C or D.

?For each question 19—33,mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet.

?There is an example at the beginning.

The Central Problem of Economics

The central problem of economics is to satisfy the people's and nation's wants.

The problem we are faced with is that our resources, here identified as money, are limited. The only way we can resolve our problem is to make choices. After looking at our resources, we must examine our list of (19) and identify the things we need immediately, those we can postpone, and (20) we cannot afford. As individuals, we face the central problem involved in economics deciding just how to allocate (分配) our limited resources to provide (21) with the greatest satisfaction of our wants. Nations face the same problem. As a country's population grows the need for more goods and services grows correspondingly. Resources necessary to production may increase, but there (22) are enough re sources to satisfy the total desires of a nation. Whether the budget meeting is taking place in the family (23) room, in the conference room of the corporation (24) of directors, or in the chamber of the House of Representatives in Washington, the basic problem still exists. We need to find methods of allocating limited resources in order to satisfy unlimited wants.

A short time ago economists (25) goods into two categories, free and economic. The former, like air and water, were in (26) abundance that economists had no concern for them. After all, economics is the (27) of scarcity (匮乏) and what to do about it. Today many of these "free goods" are (28) very expensive to use. Pollution has made clean air and water expensive for producers who have to filter their waste products, for consumers who ultimately (最终) (29) the producers' extra costs, and (30) taxpayers who pay for the government's involvement in cleaning the environment.

In the 1990s, almost all goods are (31) Only by effort and money can they be obtained in the form. people wish.

Meeting the needs of people and froming resources available (32) the basic activity of production. In trying to meet (33) wants from limited economic goods, production leads to new problems in economics.

(19)

A.want

B.problems

C.wants

D.resources
