听力原文:W: Good afternoon, Doctor Thomas's office.

M: Hello, my name is Nathan, and I was hoping I could come in today to see the doctor.

W: Are you a patient of Doctor Thomas?

M: Well, no. I'm here to have my vacation, I feel uncomfortable today, and the manager of the hotel where I'm staying suggested that I call you.

W: What is your problem?

M: Well, I got a serious headache and coughed all day.

W: Do you have a fever?

M: No, I can't feel that.

W: Do you have sore throat and runny nose?

M: Yes, I do, not very serious.

W: It seems you have caught flu. The doctor will be busy at the hospital until this evening. The earliest you could see him would be tomorrow morning at ten.

M: Tomorrow morning? Can't it be a little earlier? I just feel terrible.

W: I am sorry, Sir. Doctor Thomas really has no time to see you today.

M: Ok, I'll come in then.

W: That will be fine, and in the meantime you should drink more water and try to take it easy.

听力原文: Next time you bring your kids in for a checkup, don't be surprised if the doctor asks about their tastes in entertainment. The American Academy of Medicine suggested last week that doctors work with parents to evaluate how much TV kids watch and what they see, what video and computer games they play, which websites they visit on the Internet, whether they view R-rated videos without the company of their parents, what music they like and what books they read. Doctors are worried that kids who spend too much time in front of the TV set don't get enough exercise and can become overweight. The academy is also concerned that the message kids get from entertainment media can make them more violent and sexually active.

The academy recommends that children under age two not watch any TV. "Children need activities to stimulate the brain during the first two years of life," says Doctor Mitten Baron, who chairs the academy's committee on public education. "They need feedback and socialization." Elder children, she says, should watch TV in a common area. Their bedrooms should be "electronic media-free zones", where they can have a quiet place to read, study, play or just relax.

(23)

A.How much exercise they get every day.

B.What they are most worried about.

C.How long their parents accompany them daily.

D.What entertainment they are interested in.

Wayne Beno

Wayne Beno was a true outdoorsman. Fishing, boating, hunting, walking through the woods with his three dogs, Wayne loved and did it all. Then life changed dramatically. Wayne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease(帕金森氏病).

"For the next thirteen years I took 28 pills a day, had horrible side effects, and even with all those pills I still had lots of shaking and tremors(颤抖). I only went out during peak times, when I was looking and feeling my best. But that wasn't often and I really couldn't do much of anything. I felt like the life I loved was over, "said Wayne.

Then Wayne's doctor in Green Bay suggested he consider a breakthrough surgical option being offered at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin called Deep Brain Stimulation(刺激)(DBS). DBS is a surgical option used to treat disabling movement disorders related to Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and more. It is not a cure, but significant improvement is seen in most movement disorder cases, with relatively low risk to the patient.

In addition to his doctor's recommendation, Wayne had a neighbor and fishing friend who had the DBS procedure at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. His friend's experience convinced Wayne that the 180-mile trip from his home in Crivitz, Wisconsin could be well worth the effort.

And was it ever.

"It was the best thing I ever did. I'm down to zero pills a day and I don't shake at all, "reports Wayne. "Before the surgery, I felt bad every single day. Now I feel like my old self. I'm back to business as usual, which for me means fishing, fishing, and more fishing, every day of the year. Things just couldn't be any better!"

Before getting Parkinson's disease, Wayne loved

A.social activities.

B.outdoor activities.

C.productive activities.

D.quiet activities.

Economically disadvantaged preschool children were trained in one of three types of fantas
y activities over a school year. One group of children listened to fairy tales, and then acted them out. The children would pantomime such things as the wolf blowing the pigs' houses down, or the pigs running and screaming with the wolf in hot pursuit. The children were encourage to trade roles fromsession to session. Another group of children acted out common experiences, such as visits to the doctor or grocery store, or outings to the zoo, a fire station etc. The stories acted out were thus closer to the children's actual experience and involved less fantasy than those of the first group. A third group of children read fairy tales, but they did not act them out. After hearing the stories, the children would discuss them. In addition to these three groups, a fourth group of children acted as a control group that had interaction sessions with the staff involving such typical preschool activities as finger painting cutting and pasting and identifying animals in picture books.

It was found that the physical enactment of fantasy experiences markedly improved children's performance on a variety of measures of intellectual functioning, empathy, length of resistance before touching an attractive but forbidden toy, and other measures of impulse control. Simply listening to and discussing the stories was usually no more effective than the control situation. In addition, the results suggested that fantasy play, which was farther removed from reality, such as that involving fairy tales, had more positive consequences than sociodramatic play dealing with more common experiences. Imaginative sociodramatic play can be used successfully as a means of facilitating cognitive development and self - control in young children.

The passage mainly concerns ______.

A.imaginative sociodramatic play

B.economically disadvantaged,children

C.training children in fantasy

D.experiments on children's intelligence

Attempts to understand the relationship between social behavior. and health have their ori
gin in history. Dubos(1969) suggested that primitive humans were closer to the animals in that they, too, relied upon their instincts to stay healthy. Yet some primitive humans recognized a cause and effect relationship between doing certain thing and alleviating (减轻)symptoms of a disease or improving the condition of a wound. Since there was so much that primitive humans did not understand about the functioning of the body, magic became an integral component of the beliefs about the causes arid cutes of health disorders. So it is not surprising that early humans thought that illness was caused by evil spirits. Primitive medicines made from vegetables or animals were invariably used in combination with some form. of ritual to expel harmful spirit from a diseased body.

One of the earliest attempts in the western world to formulate(系统地阐述)principles of health care based upon rejection of supernatural phenomena is found in the work of the Greek physician Hippocrates. Little is known of Hippocrates who lived around 400 B. C., not even whether he actually authored the collection of books that bears his name. Nevertheless, the writings, attributed to him have provided a number of principles underlying modern practice. One of his most famous contributions, the Hippocratic Oath, is the foundation of contemporary medical ethics(道德). Among other things, it requires the physician to swear that he or she will help the sick, keep oneself from intentional wrong-doing or harm, and keep secret all matters to keep the doctor patient relation-ship.

Hippocrates also argued that medical knowledge should be derived from an understanding of the natural sciences and the logic of cause and effect relation-ships. In this classic thesis, On Airs, Waters, and Places, Hippocrates pointed out that human wellbeing is influenced by the totality of environmental factors: living habits or lifestyle, climate, geography of the land, and the quality of air, and food. Interesting enough, concerns about our health and the quality of air, water, and places are still very much written in the twentieth century.

Primitive humans looked like animals.

A. Right

B. Wrong

C. Not mentioned
