Excite's Universal Inbox: A Mixed Bag If information is coming at you from mo many directi

Excite's Universal Inbox: A Mixed Bag

If information is coming at you from mo many directions, Excite @ Home's Excite Inbox promises a solution. This Web site gives you one Inbox for e-mail, voice mail, and faxes, and, perhaps best of all, you get it all for free. It's not a particularly good inbox.

The service is pretty much your standard Web-based e-mail system, not much different from Hotmail or any other, you can visit it from any Web-enabled computer. It supports attachments, displays formatted messages properly, and can read messages from your standard POP e-mail accounts in addition to any other account you set up with Excite. And, just like the other e-mail services on the Web, it's much slower than non-Web-based e-mail. You do get one unique feature: you can personalize the Excite Inbox with your choice of nine unread-mail icons and 15 color schemes, including Lavender, Techno, and Mint Julep. It's a nice feature, but not an earth-shattering one.

For voice mail, then Excite Inbox offers great conveniences for you and annoying hassles for your callers. If your friends call when you're not at home, they must hang up and call another number (at least it's toll-free). Then, they must dial or say a ten-digit extension (there are ten billion ten-digit numbers; how many subscribers does Excite hope to get?). They have to wait through a short commercial, then leave their message. And they'd better be brief, because no message can exceed 90 seconds.

Things can get worse for anyone sending you a fax. They must dial the toll-free number and then the extension, wait through file commercial, and finally press the fax machine's Start button on cue. While only a minor annoyance for anyone standing over a fax machine, this can be a major challenge for some poor soul sending you a fax from a computer. On the other hand, should anyone leave you a message or send you a fax, it is conveniently listed in your inbox alongside your e-mail messages. Listening to messages and viewing faxes are both simple and easy. You cannot currently send faxes from the Excite Inbox, but Excite @ Home is working in this feature for a future version.

The service offers some nice ways to stay connected—you can synchronize your inbox data with Microsoft Outlook or Palm Desktop, and if you have a Palm VII, you'll get wireless access to your messages. If you need free voicemail, the Excite Inbox could be worthwhile. If you want to receive faxes in your e-mail, Excite Inbox is just one choice of many.

Which of the following statement is Not correct according to the passage?

A.Excite Inbox is a mailbox which is not much different from the ordinary mailboxes.

B.You can visit Excite Inbox from any Web-enabled computer.

C.The Excite Inbox supports attachment, displays formatted messages properly and can read messages from your standard POP e-mail.

D.The Excite Inbox e-mail services are much slower than non-Web-based e-mail.

Famous American Foods

What, besides children, connects mothers around the world and across the seas of time? It's chicken soup, one prominent American food expert says.

From Russian villages to Africa and Asia, chicken soup has been the remedy for those weak in body and spirit. Mothers passed their knowledge on to ancient writers of Greece, China and Rome, and even 12th century philosopher and physician Moses Maimonides extolled (赞美)its virtues.

Among the ancients, Aristotle thought poultry should stand in higher estimation than four-legged animals because the air is less dense than the earth. Chickens got another boost (吹捧)in the Book of Genesis, where it is written that birds and fish were created on the fifth day, a day before four-legged animals.

But according to Mimi Sheraton, who has spent much of the past three years exploring the world of chicken soup, much of the reason for chicken's real or imagined curative (治愈的)powers comes from its color.

Her new book, "The Whole World Loves Chicken Soup", looks at the beloved and mysterious brew, with dozens of recipes from around the world. Throughout the ages, she said, "There has been a lot of feeling that white-colored foods are easier to eat for the weak woman and the ill".

In addition, "soups, or anything for that matter eaten with a spoon" are considered "comfort foods" Sheraton said. "I love soup and love making soup and as I was collecting recipes I began to see this as an international dish. It has a universal mystique as something curative, a strength builder," Sheraton said from her New York home.

Her book treats the oldest remedy as if it was brand new.

The National Broiler Council, the trade group representing the chicken industry, reported that 51 percent of the people it surveyed said they bought chicken because it was healthier, 50 percent said it was versatile, 41 percent said it was economical and 46 percent said it was low in fat.

Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? ______

A.Prominent American Foods

B.History of the Chicken Soup

C.Chicken Soup Recipes

D.Chicken Soup, a Universal Cure-All

听力原文:A: Hi,Xiao Wang, and welcome back. How is the West Coast?

B: Terrific. I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from the city for a while.

A: What did you think of Los Angeles?

B: It was all fight. I liked it better than I thought I would. It's very clean and spacious, and it's got lots of trees. The problem is transportation. The bus service is terrible, and, of course, they don't have a subway, so it's little difficult to get around. We had to rent a ear.

A: And what did you see?

B: Oh, the usual thing. We took a drive around Hollywood and looked at the stars' home, and then we went to Universal Studios and Disneyland.

A: How did you like Disneyland?

B: It was great. We really enjoyed it. We took all the rides, some of them twice, and had lots of fun. I felt just like a kid again.

A: Was the weather good?

B: Oh, great. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles and cool but comfortable in San Francisco?

A: Cool in San Francisco? That's surprising.

B: Yeah, it surprised us a bit, too. We didn't take any sweaters or anything. But they say it's always like that in August. Anyway, I just loved it. It's probably the most beautiful town in the U. S. —all those hills, and the bay, and those charming old Victorian houses.

A: So, you liked it better than Los Angeles?

B: Oh, yes. There's much more to see and do. And because it's smaller than Los Angeles, it's a lot easier to get around. There are lots of buses and streetcars, and of course, the cable ears.

A: What did you like best?

B: Oh, I don't know. It's hard to say. I liked Golden Gate Park and Fishermen's Wharf. But I guess, most of all, I liked the cable car ride--that was the most fun.

Where did Xiao Wang come back?

A.Los Angeles.

B.San Francisco.

C.Universal Studios and Disneyland.

D.Both A and B.

High-speed Internet provider At Home Corp. is buying Excite Inc. , one of the leading dest
inations on the World Wide Web, for about $6.7 billion in stock in one of the largest Internet company deals. The deal announced today would surpass America Online Inc. 's $4.2 billion acquisition of Netscape Communications Corp. last year. Based on closing stock prices Friday, Excite is worth about $ 3.4 billion, which would mean that At Home would be paying a huge premium. The deal could eventually give telecommunications giant AT&T Corp. control of one of the highly sought after portals that serve as entry points onto the Internet.

At Home is owned by Tele-Communications Inc. , Cox Communications and several other investors. TCI is in the process of merging with AT&T Corp. in a $39 billion deal that is expected to be completed by spring. AT&T Corp. chief executive Michael Armstrong has stated he wants to use At Home as a conduit tor delivering a wide range of communications services, including electronic commerce. Control over Excite, which has a search engine and links to several online shopping sites, would certainly enhance that goal. Excite, which has lagged behind other Web site companies, such as Yahoo!, has been looking for a larger partner in the rapidly consolidating Internet portal market, especially in wake of the AOL-Netscape deal. Several other companies had been rumored to be interested in Excite, including Yahoo! Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Negotiations between Yahoo! and Excite broke off this weekend, according to published reports.

Excite, eager to extend its reach and market power, was attracted by an alliance with AT&T and TCI. Excite's shareholders are expected to own about 30% of the combined company, which would be known as At Home Networks. Excite chief executive George Bell would take a position on the new company's executive board, reporting to At Home chief executive Tom Jermoluk. At Home, which delivers high-speed Internet service over cable TV lines, has more than 330,000 customers. The deal would give it access to Excite's more than 20 million registered users and to the company's content development capabilities. Both companies are located in Redwood City, Calif. At Home, whose stock has risen nearly 300% over the past year, has the money to make a deal, Michael Harris, president of Kinetic Strategies Inc. told MSNBC. "With At Home's existing stock valuation (of about $11.7 billion), it's been surprising they haven't done more deals. They've certainly got a huge war chest built up."

Neither company has yet made a profit. In the three months ended Sep. 30, Excite lost $6.8 million on revenue of $44 million, including acquisition and amortization expenses. In the same period, At Home lost $9.7 million.

Why does At Home want to buy Excite?

A.Because Tom Jermoluk wants to control his strongest competitor.

B.Because it wants to expand its business through Excite's present resources.

C.Because both companies are based in Redwood City, California.

D.Because it has lost $9.7 million in the last three months.
