M: Oh, I still do, but it's my roommate's birthday tomorrow and I am looking around to get him a present. He's not exactly the easiest person to find a present for.

W: Have you had any ideas of what to get?

M: Not really. I want to get him something he will be able to use instead of something he'lI just put into the closet.

听力原文:Apartment Manager: Well, hi Mr. Brown. How's the apartment working out for you?

Tenant: Well, Mr. Nelson. That's what I'd like to talk to you about. Well, I want to talk to you about that noise. You see...would you mind talking to the tenant in 4B and ask him to keep his music down, especially after 10:00 at night?

Apartment Manager: Ooooh. Who me?

Tenant: Why yes. The music is blaring almost every night, and it should be your job as manager to take care of things.

Apartment Manager: Hey, I just collect the rent. Besides, the man living there is the owner's son, and he's a walking refrigerator. Hey, I'll see what I can do. Anything else?

Tenant: Well, yes. Could you talk to the owners of the property next door about the pungent odor drifting this way.

Apartment Manager: Well, the area is zoned for agricultural and livestock use, so there's nothing much I can do about that.

Tenant: Well, what about the...that! That noise!

Apartment Manager: What noise? I don't hear anything.

听力原文:M: Hi, I've been looking for you since the morning. Where have you been?

W: Yeah, I don't feel like hanging out with the crowd any more, especially since Jane stopped coming to school.

M: It's such a pity about her parents; losing one parent is bad enough, but losing them both on the same day and in such an accident...It's terrible! Have you seen her since?

W: No. I tried talking to her on the phone. But she refused to talk. She's quite down.

M: The other day, I talked to Mr. Smith—you know that tall guy who works in the Dean's Office. Apparently, Jane is thinking of dropping out of school. She has almost no money. Her parents didn't have much savings.

W: Yeah, I've been quite worried about her. But simply feeling sorry for her is far from enough; we have to think of some way to help her. Have any suggestion?

M: Well, I could possibly give her some money. I've saved some up from my part-time job.

W: You're so generous! But that wouldn't be a long-term solution.

M: That's true. Perhaps we could help her find a part-time job.

W: Good idea! The lady who runs the shop next to my door could be helpful. If Jane is interested, I can introduce her to the lady.

M: Great! Once she gets a regular income, things will be better. More than anything else, it will take her mind off her tragedy.

W: Could we organize a fund-raiser for her?

M: Well, I'm not sure how that would work. You know, talking help from us is one thing, but getting the whole school involved may not be a good idea.

W: Yeah, you're right. We'll think of something else. OK, let's go ahead with what we've planned. Bye.

M: Bye.

(23)

A.How to get a part-time job.

B.A terrible accident on campus.

C.How to help a classmate.

D.Independence of college students.

W: Hi, Prof. Webster, this is Janet Hill calling, I'm living two doors down from your teaching assistant, Don Williams. Don asked me to call you because he has lost his voice and can't talk to you himself.

M: Lost his voice. Oh, what a shame! Is there anything I can do for him?

W: well, he has a class this afternoon from two-thirty to four and he won't be able to teach it, but he doesn't want to cancel it either.

M: Want me to try to find somebody else to teach the class?

W: No, not exactly. What he wants to do is to get someone to go in for him, just to pass back the mid-term exams. He's already marked them and they are on the desk in his office. The whole thing wouldn't take more than ten minutes.

M: His classes are at two-thirty, eh? Well I'm afraid at that time I was going to be on campus anyway; so I could do it for him. What room is his claas in?

W: Cader Hall, room 214. Will you need his office key to get the exams? He's given it to me and I could bring it to you.

M: Actually, that won't be necessary. We have a master key in the math department. So I can get into his office.

W: Thank you very much, Professor Webster. Don doesn't have another class to teach until Thursday, and hopefully, he will be able to talk by then. He'll call you as soon as he can.
