听力原文: Do you know what Prince Charles, Seve Ballesteros and Elizabeth Taylor have in c
ommon? They all suffer from chronic back pain. In fact, bad back is one of the most common health problems today, affecting people in all walks of life. The most recent available figures show that about a quarter of a million people are incapacitated with back pain every day.

And many sufferers don't know the cause or the solution to their problem.

The majority of our patients at the clinic tend to be women. They are especially vulnerable because of pregnancy but also because of osteoporosis, which I personally believe to be the major cause of problems for women. I have many women patients who say they have completely given up exercise because the pain makes them so miserable. But of course that starts up a vicious circle. Bed rest, giving up exercise and pain killers are traditional responses to back pain but, although there are many excellent drugs on the market, at our clinic we are beginning to realise the unique benefits of relaxation therapy. Other specialists in the field make a strong case for certain types of exercise, but in our experience they are easily mishandled and can lead to more harm than good.

Now, let's look at some of the reasons why back pain is developing into such a unique menace. In general, the body is pretty good at self-repair. A strain or a blow to a limb, though painful at the time, generally resolves itself. But the body's response to back injury can be very counter-productive. When pain strikes, we attempt to keep the back as immobile as possible, which makes the muscles tense up. Research shows that they often go into spasm, which cause further twisting of the spine. A vicious circle is underway.

The second mistake we often make when stricken with extreme back pain is to go to bed and stay there. Although at the clinic we recognise that a short rest in bed can be helpful… up to two days… any longer makes our back muscles become weaker and unable to hold up our spine. The pain therefore becomes worse.

Another problem is being overweight. Anyone a stone or more overweight who already has back pain is not doing himself any favours: though it won't actually set it off in the first place, the weight will increase the strain and make things worse. The British diet could be partially to blame for the increase in back pain: over the last ten years the average weight of men has risen by 11 lbs. and of women by 9 lbs..

Questions:

16.What is the speaker mainly talking about?

17.According to the speaker, what is the main cause of back pain in women?

18.What does the clinic mainly recommend as treatment for back pain?

19.What is the main difference between back and other parts of the body?

20.According to the speaker, which of the following statements about bed rest is true?

(36)

A.Celebrity life.

B.Chronic back pain.

C.Healthcare for people in all walks of life.

D.Diet and pain.

听力原文: Toronto is one of the largest cities in Canada. It is located in the province of Ontario. A special feature of Toronto is the downtown area—covering about twelve square kilometers—where many shops and buildings are located underground. There are five major shopping centers and a convention center with hotels. A subway and underground passageways connect these buildings with each other and the streets above. The architectural design is appropriate and popular because of the weather conditions in Toronto. The temperature fluctuates widely from summer to winter—by as much as 40 degrees Celsius within a year. This underground area has also helped to keep business in the city center instead of moving out to the suburbs, which is happening in many other cities. We think that makes Toronto a special place.

What is the talk mainly about?

A.The population of Canada

B.The design of the city of Toronto

C.The size of the shopping centers

D.The province of Ontario

听力原文: Every culture has many sayings that give advice about life. These sayings are part of what is commonly called folk wisdom. Of course, folk wisdom is also expressed in other ways, such as myths, fairy tales, legends, and songs. Often however, folk wisdom is shared in the form. of short sayings about the best ways to approach life's joys and sorrows.

One characteristic of American folk wisdom is its humor. Humor makes the bitter medicine of life easier to swallow. It sometimes makes the harsh realities of life more attractive. For example, Benjamin Franklin's clever saying, "A full belly makes a dull brain" means "People who are well-fed or self-satisfied can become lazy and stupid." But this paraphrasing loses the elegance and humor of Franklin's original saying. Some moralists in the United States are successful because they are able to say wise things humorously.

Abraham Lincoln expressed similar opinions about life but in a different way. Lincoln continued the tradition of "horse sense" humor. This type of humor appeals to people who are hungry for practical common sense. Lincoln, both a politician and an idealist, understood the need for horse sense. He knew how to use common sense to influence people's opinion. He could take the highest moral principles or the most critical observations and use them in folksy—or simple commonsense—humor to make them better understood and more easily accepted. Take, for example, this quote, which is one of the best known in the United States. "You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. " Another of Lincoln's wise, folksy statements is: "The Lord prefers common-looking people. That's why he makes so many of them. "

There is no doubt that people need a little push sometimes to help them see the folly of their ways. Mark Twain used humor to reveal that many popular ideas were false, foolish, or even harmful. Twain thought that most human beings didn't examine why they believe certain things, and that they were too easily influenced by the opinions of people in power. He felt that it was easier for people to be "misled" than to be led correctly, so he tried to show the foolishness of those in power. For example, he said, "Hain't we got all the fools in town on our side and ain't that a big enough majority in any town?"

Now you may get the impression that Twain was a misanthrope, a person who saw everyone's mistakes and never noticed their good qualities. It's true that his humor was sometimes harsh, but it was used to reveal truths about human relationships. Twain thought the result would be a better, more just society. However, he also realized that he irritated a lot of people. He was aware that when newspapers reported his death, many people might be happy to hear the news. The telegram he sent from Europe to the Associated Press is typical of his humor. It read, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated. "

Questions:

16. According to the talk, what is major characteristic of "folk wisdom"?

17.According to the talk, what is the major difference between Franklin and Lincoln when composing short sayings of folk wisdom?

18.According to the talk, which of the following statements is TRUE about "horse sense" humor?

19.According to the talk, what was Mark Twain's purpose for using humor?

(36)

A.It is produced by famous people.

B.It gives advice about life.

C.It's expressed in myths, fairy tales, legends and songs.

听力原文: What is the shape of the universe? The question has baffled and obsessed humankind since civilization first gazed up towards the heavens. The world has yet to receive a satisfactory explanation. Now a new study hints at a possible answer. Contrary to the traditional interpretation, the study suggests the universe is finite and bears a rough resemblance to a soccer ball, or to put it more accurately, the universe looks like a 12-sided volume bounded by pentagons. Based on the new theory, a model has been made to help illustrate the alleged shape of the Universe. If proven by further evidence and inspection, the model would represent a major discovery about the nature of the cosmos.

"What makes the discovery exciting now is it's not a matter of idle speculation," said Jeffrey Weeks, a US mathematician, "There's real data to look at and there's the great possibility of getting a definite answer." Weeks has announced hints that the Universe is actually relatively small, with a hall-of-mirrors illusion which tricks us into thinking that the space stretches on forever.

While studying cosmic background radiation observed by NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, Jeffrey Weeks, together with a team of French cosmologists, arrived at this new discovery. It is still in question whether the theory is correct. However, the idea itself is indeed appealing and inspiring.

(26)

A.A new discovery in Mathematics.

B.A new program conducted by NASA.

C.A new theory on the shape of the universe.

D.A new planet detected in space.

Such mental fatigue can be as threatening as a heart attack. Recent evidence indicates tha
t sleepiness is a leading cause of traffic and industrial accidents. "Human error causes between 60% and 900 of all workplace accidents, depending on the type of job, " observes biological psychologist David Dinges of the University of Pennsylvania. "And inadequate sleep is a major factor in human error, at least as important as drugs, alcohol and equipment failure." Other research suggests that sleep loss contributes to everything from drug abuse to poor grades in school.

A typical adult needs about eight hours of shut-eye a night to function effectively. By that standard, millions of Americans are for a long time sleep deprived, trying to get by on six hours or even less. In many households, cheating on sleep has become an unconscious and harmful habit. "In its mild form, it's watching Ted Koppel and going to bed late and then getting up early to get to the gym, "says Cornell's Pollak. In extreme cases people stay up most of the night, seeing how little sleep will keep them going. They try to compensate by short sleeping late on weekends, but that makes up for only part of the shortfall. Over the months and years, some researchers believe, the imbalance builds up and the effects accumulate. "Most Americans no longer know what it feels like to be fully alert, " contends Dr. William Dement, director of Stanford University's Sleep Center. They go through the day in a sort of twilight zone; the eyes may be wide open, but the brain is partly shut down.

Single parent Dianna Bennett, 43, works as a nurse at a correctional facility in Gardner, Mass. To be able to spend time with her three children during the day, she works the night shift, a schedule that usually allows her no more than four hours of sleep, "My kids tell me I'm always tired," she says. Amy Schwartzman, 35, a law student at Tulane University, gets up at 9 a.m. and, what with classes, simulated court and work as a research assistant, often does not get home until 10 p.m. That's when she studies or relaxation. Nights of throwing into bed at 3 a.m. make her feel "as if my brain isn't moving as quickly as quickly as it should." says Schwartzman, noting that the circles under her eyes keep getting darker. "My mother told me I look like a raccoon."

Sleep loss contributes to everything except______.

A.drug abuse

B.poor school grades

C.work effect

D.accidents
