听力原文:W: Sam, could you review the results of the survey on leisure sporting activities
again? We need to plan out our proposal for this Friday's business meeting.

M: Sure. I've summarized the results in the handout, broken down by consumer age groups and sporting activities. The survey was administered to 550 men and women between the ages of 18 and 55 years old, and the results have been compiled in the following age groups: 18 to 26, 27 to 35, 36 to 45, and 46 to 55. According to the results, the most active group involved in sporting activities are those between 18 and 26 years old, followed by those 36 to 45 years old.

W: I see.

M: As far as particular sports are concerned, people in these two groups cited jogging as their favorite recreational sport followed by skiing, tennis, swimming, and cycling.

W: And what about these groups broken down by gender?

M: Oh, thanks for bringing that up. Men appear to be slightly mom active than women in the 18 to 26 year-old age group, but women seem more active in the other three groups.

W: Hmm. Based on what you have said, I think we should consider targeting the 18 to 26 year-old age group more in the future. I also feel we should consider expanding our line of athletic shoes, particularly jogging and tennis footwear. We also have to come up with a more appealing slogan aimed at this age group.

M: I see what you mean. However, when these results are compared with the survey carried out three years ago, we can see a growing trend among older consumers--those 14, I mean 46 to 55 who are becoming more conscious and concerned about staying fit. I believe this trend will continue, so we should focus on this group instead.

W: I see your point. Well, let's meet again on Wednesday to iron out more of the details of this proposal.

(23)

A.Leisure sporting activities.

B.Average age of athletes.

C.Durability of sporting equipment.

D.People's preference for sporting activities.

听力原文: The home is the central focus of most young people's lives in Britain, particula
rly for those who are still attending school. The majority rely upon their home environment as a place of security and upon their parents as the main providers of food, money and other necessities of life—as well as general advice. Young people spend a large proportion of their leisure time at home with other members of their family or with friends.

After the home, school is the main social environment where children not only receive their formal education but also develop their identities within peer groups. All school children in Britain are encouraged to take up activities which complement their academic and vocational education and help to identify their individual talent, such as sports, drama, music and creative pursuits. Many of these form. part of the school curricula.

The personal development and informal social education of young people aged from 11 to 25 are also promoted by the Youth Service in Britain. The Service is a partnership between law authorities and a large number of voluntary organizations. A recent survey estimates that nearly six million young people in this age group are either current or past participants in the Service.

Youth clubs and centers are the most common types of Youth Service provision, encouraging their members to participate in sport, cultural and creative activities, and community service. Some also provide information and counseling. Youth clubs may be branches of national or international bodies or they may be entirely local institutions.

(33)

A.At school.

B.At home.

C.At Youth Clubs.

D.At Youth Centers.

听力原文: People management skills are the most important skills a manager can develop. What differentiates a leader from a manager is that the leader has acquired not just the technical and strategic skills but the interpersonal skills to make things happen.

No doubt on your way up through the ranks, you have come across managers who are lacking in interpersonal skills, though they may be good at other aspects of their jobs. And you know, their future will be affected greatly by this lack of human skills.

Our program is totally devoted to developing those managerial skills in people on their way to the top. It covers motivating, assessing, rewarding, leading and developing people. Very simple models of interpersonal relationships are used to focus attention on understanding one's own behavior, its impact on others, understanding the goals of others and integrating a group into a winning team.

Professor John Hunt, Program Director, deliberately limits the number of people on this program to guarantee personal attention between tutors and participants. To match the content precisely to your needs, we ask you to do some pre-course work which includes a survey of those who work with you. This data is linked to our own large databank on how effective managers operate. We then work with you to develop your own specific goals as a manager.

(26)

A.Managers who want to strengthen their leadership.

B.Managers who want to improve their strategic and technical skills.

C.Managers who lack managerial skills in general.

D.Managers who lack human management skills.

Questions 下列各 are based on the following passage. Amid a summer of record-setting he
at, a new survey fmds that most of Generation Xs (20世纪60年代到70年代初出生的美国人) young and middle-age adults are tminformed and unconcerned about climate change. Only about 5% of Gen Xers, now 32 to 52 years old, are "alarmed" and 18% "concerned" about climate change, reports the University of Michigans Institute for Social Research on Tuesday. Two-thirds, or 66% , of those surveyed last year said they arent sure global warming is happening and 10% said they dont believe its occurring. "Most Generation Xers are surprisingly disengaged, dismissive or doubtful about whether global climate change is happening and they dont spend much time worrying about it," said author Jon D.Miller. The report comes as several Obama administration officials have recently linked extreme weather to climate change. In a report last week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration cited six weather events last year and said that atmospheric changes caused by the burning of fossil fuels made Texas heat wave, for example, 20 times more likely than it would have been in the 1960s. The Generation X survey of about 3,000 adults, the fourth in a continuing series, found a small butstatistically significant decline in Gen Xers attention to climate change. In 2011, 16% said they followed the issue very or moderately closely, down from 2296 in 2009. Why are Gen Xere so indifferent? The report, funded by the National Science Foundation, citesclimate changes complexity, pressing economic concerns and "issue fatigue". It finds educated adults tend to be more concerned about the issue. It also finds partisan (党派的) differences; nearly half ofliberal Democrats were concerned or alarmed compared to zero percent of conservative Republicans. Miller said he expected that, given climate changes expected impact on future generations, parents of young children would be more concerned than those without kids. "Not so," he said. " Generation X adults without minor children were. slightly more alarmed aboutclimate change than were parents. The difference is small, but it is in the opposite direction than weexpected. " Miller said the report suggests that while theres broad awareness of climate change, manyGen Xers prefer to focus on more immediate issues such as jobs and schools. What do we know about the Generation X according to the passage?

A.They are a group of people receiving little education.

B.They dont believe global warming will affect them.

C.They dont care very much about climate change.

D.They never think that climate change will happen.

The subject of my study is women who are initiating social change in a small region in Tex
as. The women are Mexican Americans who are, or were, migrant agricultural workers. There is more than one kind of innovation at work in the region, of course, but I have chosen to focus on three related patterns of family behavior.

The pattern I life style. represents how migrant farm workers of all nationalities lived in the past and how many continue to live. I treat this pattern as a baseline with which to compare the changes represented by pattern Ⅱ and Ⅲ. Families in pattern I work and travel in extended kin units, with the eldest male occupying the position of authority. Families are large and no children are unusual. And all members are economic contributors in this strategy of family migration. Families in pattern Ⅱ manifest some differences in behavior. while still maintaining aspects of pattern I. They continue to migrate but on a reduced scale, often modifying their schedules of migration to allow children to finish the school year. Parents in this pattern often find temporary local jobs as checkers to make up for lost farming income. Pattern Ⅱ families usually have fewer children than do pattern I families.

The greatest amount of change from pattern I, however, is in pattern III families, who no longer migrate at all. Both parents work full time in the area and have an average of three children. Children attend school for the entire year. In pattern Ⅲ, the women in particular create new roles for them selves for which no local models exist. They not only work full time but may, in addition, return to school. They also assume a greater responsibility in family decisions than do women in the other pat terns. Although these women are in the minority among residents of the region, they serve as role models for others, causing moderate changes to spread in their communities.

Now opportunities have continued to be determined by pre-existing values. When federal jobs became available in the region, most involved working under the direction of female professionals such as teachers or nurses. Such positions were unaccepted to many men in the area because they were not accustomed to being subordinate to women. Women therefore took the jobs, at first, be cause the income was desperately needed. But some of the women decided to stay at their jobs, at first, after the family' s distress was over. These women enjoyed their work, its responsibility, and the companionship of fellow women workers. The steady, relatively high income allowed their families to stop migrating. And, as the benefits to these women became increasingly apparent, they and their families became even more willing to consider changes in their lives that they would not have considered before.

Which of the following titles best reflects the main focus of the passage?

A.A Survey of Three Mexican American Families at Work in Texas.

B.Innovative Career Women: Effects on Family Unity.

C.Changes in the Life Styles of Migrant Mexican American Families.

D.Farming of Family: The Unavoidable Choice for Migrant Farm Workers.

Passage One

The Urbanization — migration away from the suburbs to the city center — will be the biggest real estate trend in 2015, according to a new report.

The report says America’s urbanization will continue to be the most significant issue affecting the industry, as cities across the country imitate the walkability and transit-oriented development making cities like New York and San Francisco so successful.

As smaller cities copy the model of these “24-hour cities,”tfiore affordable versions of these places will be created. The report refers to this as the coming of the “18-hour city,”,and uses the term to refer to cities like Houston, Austin, Charlotte, and Nashville, which are “positioning themselves as highly competitive, in terms of livability, employment offerings, and recreational and cultural facilities.”

Another trend that looks significant in 2015 is that America’s largest population group, Millennials (千禧一代),will continue to put off buying a house. Apartments will retain their appeal for a while for Millennials, haunted by what happened to home-owning parents.

This trend will continue into the 2020s, the report projects. After that, survey respondents disagree over whether this generation will follow in their parents, footsteps, moving to the suburbs to raise families, or will choose to remain in the city center.

Another issue affecting real estate in the coming year will be America’s failing infrastructure. Most roads, bridges, transit, water systems, the electric grid, and communications networks were installed 50 to 100 years ago, and they are largely taken for granted until they fail.

The report’s writers state that America’s failure to invest in infrastructure impacts not only the health of the real-estate market, but also our ability to remain globally competitive.

Apart from the specific trends highlighted above, which cause some investors to worry, the report portrays an overall optimism borne by the recent healthy real-estate “upcycle” and improving economy. Seventy-four percent of the respondents surveyed report a “good to excellent” expectation of real-estate profitability in 2015. While excessive optimism can promote bad investment patterns, resulting in a real- estate “bubble,” the report’s writers downplay that potential outcome in that it has not yet occurred.

According to the new report, real estate development in 2015 will witness_______ .

D.an ever-increasing demand

Why are Millennials reluctant to buy a house?A.They can only afford small apartments

D.They feel attached to the suburban environment

What characterizes “24-hour cities” like New York?A.People can live without private cars

B.People are generally more competitive

C.People can enjoy services around the clock

D.People are in harmony with the environment

What might hinder real estate development in the U.S.?A.The continuing economic recession in the country

B.The lack of confidence on the part of investors

C.The fierce global competition

D.The worsening infrastructure

How do most of the respondents in the survey feel about the U.S. real-estate market in 2015?A.Pessimistic

B.Hopeful

C.Cautious

D.Uncertain

Door-Knocking

Door-knocking is the most effective way of making face-to-face community contact, but it has become a lost art. With the recent focus on customer privacy, door-knocking seems like an intrusion into other people' s lives. But those who try it for the first time are usually surprised by the pleasant reception they receive. Here are some suggestions that will help you promote your services face-toface.

BEFORE YOU GO OUT

◆ Begin with a door hanger

Try leaving a door hanger two days before you go door-knocking. It should briefly describe the project and say that someone will be around in person.

◆ Wear an official name tag

Door-knockers should wear name tags with the logo of their organization. The best name tags will also include a color photo and the name of the caller.

◆ Have people knock their own blocks

The easiest way to do door-knocking is to try your local area first. Being a neighbor creates an immediate connection with the person answering the door; after that, everything else is easy.

◆ Find a good excuse to door-knock

A short survey about local concerns or a current project is a good excuse. Figure out responses for various situations. What if the person who answers the door cannot speak English? What if a child answers the door?

WHEN YOU GO OUT

◆ When to go and what to do first

The best times to knock are usually Saturdays. On other days, after dinner is ideal. When someone answers the door, smile and introduce yourself; say you are a volunteer and, if it helps, state where you live. Give the name of your organization and, briefly, the reason for the visit.

◆ State what action the other person should take and the benefits

Tell the person what they need to do and how their actions will benefit themselves and others. If a person hesitates, emphasize benefits you' ve already mentioned and then, if necessary, add further benefits. If a person agrees, follow up immediately. If possible, get a donation,a signature, or a promise.

◆ Record contact information on the spot

Record names, addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and responses to questions on the spot. You won' t remember them later!

(1)Why does the author say that door-knocking has become a lost art?

A. It is not effective, no one will take this method any more.

B. People focus on privacy increasingly, so door-knocking seems like an intrusion into other people' s lives

C. It is very difficult to do door-knocking, no one knows how to do it now.

(2) Which step should be firstly taken when you try door-knocking?

A. Find a good excuse to door-knock

B. Wear an official name tag

C. Leave a door hanger

(3) What does the underlined phrase “on the spot” mean?

A. without delay

B. at some place

C. in a difficult situation

(4) Which time is not appropriate for door knocking?

A. Saturday afternoon

B. Monday morning.

C. Thursday evening.

(5) Who will receive pleasant reception when they try door-knocking?

A. A stranger who is not living in this community and gives no notice for his/her visit.

B. An offensive acquaintance who comes at any time.

C. A neighbor who does good preparation and has significant project to introduce.

Today men are facing new expectations and new choices about their commitments to society,
family, and work. No longer what goals they should pursue, much less how they should pursue them, many men have found themselves in a no-man's land, searching for new meanings and definitions of maturity. In interviews I conducted with 138 men from diverse social and economic background. 36 percent defined their family and work commitments in terms of primary breadwinning, and 30 percent chose to eschew parenthood or to avoid involvement with children they had brought into the world.

However, about 33 percent had moved toward more rather than less family involvement over the course of their lives. These men develop an outlook on parenthood that included caretaking as well as economic support. They represent a growing group of fathers, most of whom arc married to work-committed women and have an egalitarian approach toward marriage and family commitments. Such men ,whom I call "involved fathers", are demonstrating a capacity, a willingness, and an enthusiasm for parenting not seen in their fathers' and grandfathers' generations.

An involved lather, however, is not necessarily an equal father. Though men's domestic participation has increased in recent year, his involvement has not kept in pace with women's rapidly rising commitment to paid employment. A persistent" housework gap" has left most women with more work and less leisure time than their male counterparts.

It may be tempting to focus on the fact that, even among men who support equality, their involvement as fathers remains a far distance from what most women want and most children need. Yet it is also important to acknowledge how far and how fast many men have moved toward a pattern that not long ago virtually all men considered anathema. One recent survey found that 73 percent of a group of randomly selected fathers agreed that "their families are the most important facet of their lives"; 87 percent agreed that "dad is as vital as mom in raising kids. "The cballenge is to create the social and cultural arrangements that would enable men to uphold these beliefs more easily.

Paragraph 1 implies that______.

A.men are at loss to what roles they should play

B.men realize that they've got into a place that no one had been before

C.men want to change the meanings and definitions of adulthood

D.men meet with great pressure from the society

•Read the following passage about a staff development plan.

•For each question (23 -28), choose the correct answer.

•Mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer sheet.

TRADING PLACES

Susan Robinson looks at job swapping, a staff development plan in which employees exchange jobs for a short period.

According to a recent survey 69% of people would prefer to work for a boss who offers training and learning in the workplace. One increasingly popular project is job swapping, which gives an insight into the daily challenges facing different people in different roles.

Jane Brown is a divisional manager with Parker Bridge Ltd, and she recently swapped jobs with salary controller there. Both were then able to appreciate the problems and pressures of each other's roles far more clearly. Brown says, "I now have better understanding of what the salary controller's work involves, and I am more aware of my colleague's deadlines. This type of cross training is important, and having to learn about another person's role is a useful experience for bosses and employees alike. Job swapping also helps you to understand the way other departments work and give you access to other teams within your firm. So it is of value both to the individual and the company as a whole."

George Knight, who works in central London, took his job exchange a lot further -- all the way to Sydney, Australia in fact. "I loved it," said Knight. "Primarily for geographic reasons, but also because of the challenge of being the final decision-maker rather than reporting to a manager. It was my first management experience and I had to improve my skills on some IT specializations. I learnt a lot there, and it was useful too -- I've had two promotions since I returned to London."

Job swapping is an excellent first step towards improving and bringing variety to training and education in the workplace. Doing something else, even for one day, can highlight your abilities and talents. It can also focus the mind on future career possibilities. And even if you hate your time spent at someone else's desk, the worst that can happen is that you'll end up feeling that little bit better about returning to your usual job.

According to Jane Brown, what did she gain from job swapping?

A.Experience of a more stressful working environment.

B.The skills required to gain promotion.

C.An idea of the strict time limits other people face.
