Football

Modern football originated in England in the 19th century. The first international football match was played in 1871 between Scotland and England and the final score was nil all. Nil is the term used in football to indicate a score of zero and nil all means both teams did not score.

FIFA stands for Federation of International Football Associations and was founded in Paris on 21st May 1904. The first World Cup was held in South America in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay in July 1930. FIFA's president at the time, Jules Rimet, was able to persuade 13 teams to meet in Uruguay. Uruguay, planning the celebration of its 100th anniversary of independence in 1930, was assigned the organisation of the first FIFA World Cup. It was the only event not to involve the modern qualifying rounds and the only European teams that came were France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and Romania. Other European teams either wished to remain in purely amateur events, or argued that the time needed for the trip to South America was far too long. Other than Uruguay six additional South American teams participated, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. Two teams remained to complete the final 13 for 1930, Mexico and the United States. Victory and the first World Cup went to Uruguay when they beat Argentina four two in the final.

The French sculptor, Abel Lafleur, created the first World Cup trophy, the famous Jules Rimet Cup. This trophy had an interesting history. During the Second World War, it was hidden from the Germans under a bed in an Italian home. After surviving World War Ⅱ, the World Cup was stolen in London during a public exhibition just before the 1966 England World Cup. Fortunately, the trophy was found hidden under a bush by a dog named Pickles before the tournament began. It was stolen again in Brazil in 1983 after the soccer superpower won it permanently after their third World Cup success in 1970. The trophy has never been recovered and many believe that thieves melted it down, leaving Brazil with only a replica of the cup. Under FIFA regulations revised after the disappearance of the Jules Rimet Cup, nowadays even three time champions cannot permanently keep the trophy.

The present trophy is the work of an Italian sculptor named Silvio Gazzaniga and it is 36 centimeters tall and weighs 4.97 kilograms. It was first awarded at the 1974 games in Germany and the champions of the 2006 tournament, also to be held in Germany, will take home a gold-plated replica, which is a little smaller than the original.

Brazil and Germany are the most successful teams in the history of World Cup football. Brazil has won the World Cup five times, including the 2002 World Cup in Japan/South Korea, and taken second place twice. Germany has made it to the final seven times and won the World Cup three times. The only player to have won three World Cups is the Brazilian, Pele whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento.

From 9 June to 9 July 2006, 32 teams will be playing in Germany for the title of the 18th FIFA Football World Champion. There will be a total of 64 matches at 12 venues. After the World Cup in 1974, this is the second time Germany will host the greatest football event in the world and 3.2 million football fans and guests are expected from around the world. The opening match is in Munich on 9 June 2006 and the final match will be in Berlin on 9 July 2006. It will be Germany's second time to host the World Cup after 1974. So far the tournament has been arranged 9 times in Europe, 4 times in Latin America, 2 times in Central America, once in North America and once in Asia(Korea & Japan). It has been never arranged in Africa.

A record number of 205 national teams participated in the qualifiers and there were some surprises in the results. Of the five teams from Africa, Ghana, Togo, Angola and Cote d'Iv

Americans are getting ready for the biggest soccer event in the world. For the first time
the World Cup soccer competition will be held in the United States. While millions play the game around the world, soccer, or football has only recently become popular here. It is only in the last 30 years that large numbers of young Americans became interested in soccer, Now it is the fastest growing sport in the country. A recent study found that almost I8 million young boys and girls play soccer in the United States.

The study also found that soccer is beginning to replace more traditional games like American football as the most popular sport among students. And so, when the World Cup begins next week, more than one million Americans are expected to go and see the teams' play. Organizers say this year' s World Cup will be the biggest ever. All the seats at most of the 52 games have already been sold.

Soccer has been played in the United States for a little more than one hundred years. But how did the sport come to this country? And how long has it existed in other parts of the world? No one knows exactly where the idea for soccer came from, or when people began playing the game. Some scientists say there is evidence that ball games using the feet were played thousands of years ago. There is evidence that ancient Greeks and Romans and native American Indians all played games similar to soccer.

Most experts agree that Britain is the birthplace of modern soccer. They also agree that the British spread the game around the world. Unlike the game today, which uses balls of man-made material or leather, early soccer balls were often made of animal stomachs. The rules of early soccer games also differed from those we have today.

第三篇The World Cup This summer’s World Cup competition will see teams competing to play

第三篇The World Cup

This summer’s World Cup competition will see teams competing to play the world’s best football. But the football they play will not all be of the same kind. The fans expect different styles of play from Brazil,Germany,or Italy.

What makes Brazilian football Brazilian? Our style. of playing football contrasts with the Europeans because of a combination of qualities of surprise, accuracy and good judgment. This style. has won Brazil five world cups.Yet many Brazilian fans only count four of these victories. In 1994,the team abandoned this style. for modern, scientific training and tactics. The team won the cup,but in a boring way.

The ltalians think differently.“To many ltalians, the score 0-0 has a glorious quality, suggesting perfection,”says the British football writer Simon Kuper. In the ltalian culture, the idea of face is very important. This is why ltalian teams are traditionally built around strong defences. The Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff once said that ltalian teams never exactly beat you. It’s just that you often lose to them.

In Holland, there is a tradition of decision making through argument and discussion. It is a society where everybody is expected to have a point of view.“Every Dutch player wants to control the game,”says Arnold Muhren.“You play football with your brains and not your feet.”

“A Dutch player argues,”says Simon Kuper.“An English player obeys his superior. He is a soldier.”The qualities valued in English football are military-strength,aggression and courage. This can make for exciting football. But it also means that the English find it difficult to use skillful players.David Beckham is usually criticized for his failure to defend-despite the fact that he is an attacker.

If the English like to fight, the Germans like to win.In recent years,Germany has tried to change its image as a country of ruthless efficiency and a desire for victory at all costs. But Germans are quite happy for these qualities to remain in their national football team.“Football is a simple game,”Gary Lineker once said.“You kick a ball about for ninety minutes and in the end the Germans win.”

It’s difficult to predict who will win this year’s World Cup.There is no strong favorite. But a look at the track record of previous winners shows that it is the nations with the strongest national characteristics in the football that perform. best.It seems that you need to know where you come from if you want to get to the top.

41.Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of the Brazilian style. of playing football?

A.Accuracy.

B.Surprise.

C.Good judgment.

D.Ruthless efficiency.

听力原文: Some people argue that the pressure on international sportsmen and sportswomen kills the essence of sport -- the pursuit of personal excellence. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competitive but they still enjoy playing. The individual representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself. He has to think only about winning. He is responsible for an entire nation's hopes, dreams and reputation.

A good example is the football World Cup. Football is the world's most important sport. Winning the World Cup is perhaps the summit of international sporting success. Mention "Brazil" to someone and the chances are that he'll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup "put Brazil on the map".

Sports fans and supporters get quite irrational about the World Cup. People in England felt that their country was somehow important after they won in 1966. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money traveling to Brazil, who won the cup.

(30)

A.Children can have fun from it.

B.People can achieve personal excellence from it.

C.The winner will be greatly honored.

D.It can realize the dreams of an entire nation.
