听力原文: In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each farm family lives on its own fields, often beyond the sight of any neighbors. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning, American farmers stay on their land throughout the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on buses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas, there are small schools serving a few farm families, and the children walk to school.

Of course life keeps changing for everyone, including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios, and television sets. And of course there are modern machines for farming. All of these have changed farm life.

For many years, however, farming in America was often a lonely way of living. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new methods, and to trust their own ideas instead of following older ways.

(30)

A.They live in bigger houses.

B.They live in villages or in towns.

C.Each family lives on its own fields.

D.They use modern machines in farming.

听力原文: The water clock was an ancient clock. It could be used on cloudy days, at night, and indoors. Such clocks were probably first used in Egypt about 2000 BC. They were also used for many years in Arabia, India, China, and all of Europe.

The simplest water clock needed just two parts—a small bowl and a large bowl. The small bowl had a tiny hole in the bottom; the large bowl was divided into equal parts and marked by lines. Water was poured into the small bowl, and it fell slowly down into the large bowl in tiny drops. Usually it took an hour for the water to rise from one line to the next in the large bowl.

A beautiful water clock was made in Persia over a thousand years ago. It was presented as a gift to the Emperor of France. This water clock could be heard as well as seen. The dial of the clock could heard as well as seen. The dial of the clock was made up of twelve doors, each representing an hour. At twelve o'clock, twelve tiny horsemen came out and shut all the doors. This was probably one of the first striking clocks.

听力原文:At present, human beings have used many devices to measure time. Perhaps, the sun

听力原文: At present, human beings have used many devices to measure time. Perhaps, the sundial was, one of the earliest and simplest devices. A sundial can measure the movement of the sun across the sky each day.

The sundial worked very well only when the sun was shining. So other ways of measuring the passing of time were invented at that time. One device was the hourglass. It used a thin stream of falling sand to measure time.

By the 1700s, people had already developed mechanical clocks and watches. And today many of our clocks and watches are electronic.

So we have devices to mark the passing of time. But what time is it now? Clocks in different parts of the world do not show the same time at the same time. As international communications and travel grew, it became clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world.

In 1884, an international conference divided the world into 24 time areas or zones. Each zone represents one hour. The astronomical observation in Greenwich, England, was chosen as the starting point for the time zone.

Most people have no trouble in agreeing that time moves forward. Some scientists believe there is one reason why time moves forward. It is clear we need a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world with scientific law: the second law of thermodynamics. The law says disorder increases with time.

(33)

A.It measures the length of a day and a night.

B.it measures the movement of the sun each day.

C.It measures the passing of hours, minutes and perhaps seconds.

D.It measures the shadow of the stick across the flat surface of the sundial.

听力原文:Customer: There's something wrong with my watch. It's running slow.

Woman: Oh, a Texor. It's a common problem with the older Texor watches. The latest ones are much better!

Customer: That's no help to me.

Woman: No, I suppose not. Anyway, it's not easy to get them fixed, either. Not many people are up to it.

Customer: Right. So ...?

Woman: And the problem is that by the time you've got it to pieces and put in the new parts and reassembled it, you might as well have replaced it. It's always the same, and it's just as likely to go wrong again in a couple of months.

You overhear a conversation between a watchmaker and a customer. What does the watchmaker say about the watch?

A.It is impossible to repair it.

B.It is not worth repairing.

C.He does not have the parts to repair it.
