One day ,I happened to(碰巧)talk to a stranger on the bus. When he found out that I was from Chicago, he told me that one of his good friends lived there and he wondered if I happened to know him. At first I wanted to say that Chicago was a very big city. He was silent(沉默)for a few minutes, and then he began to tell me all about his friend.

He told me that his friend was an excellent tennis player, and that he even had his own tennis eourt(网球场). He added that he knew a lot of people with swimming pools, but that he only knew two people in the country had their own tennis courts. And his friend in Chicago was one of them. I told him that I knew several people like that. For example, my brother and my next door neighbour. I said that my brother was a doctor. The doctor had a tennis court. I told him that my next door neighbour went to Sacramento last summer and lived in the house next to my brother's. For a moment, we looked at each other. But we did not say anything.

"Would your friend's name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?" I asked finally. He laughed and said, "Would your brother's name happen to be Dr. Ray Hunter?" It was my turn to laugh.

听力原文: When quite young, Daniel Webster did not always obey the rules at school. One day the teacher caught him breaking a ruler and asked him to come forward to be punished. In that school, striking the open hand with a ruler was the punishment. Daniel's hands happened to be very dirty. On the way to the teacher's desk he wiped the palm of one hand on his pantaloons.

"Give me your hand, sir," demanded the teacher. Out went the right hand.

The teacher looked at it a moment and said, "Daniel, if you will find another hand in this schoolroom as dirty as that, I will let you go. " Instantly from behind Daniel's back came the left hand. "Here it is, sir," he replied.

"That will do," said the teacher, laughing. "You may go."

M: Not too bad. Thank you, Jane.

W: Are you ready to go?

M: Honestly speaking, I'm glad you're here. What a terrible morning!

W: Why? What happened?

M: It's too troublesome to relate it.

W: Take it easy. It's such an important day for you ! Mary and all the guests are waiting for you. They are eager to witness your happiness.

M: I know, thank you. But after I got dressed for the wedding, I was having a cup of coffee, and then, I carelessly spilled it all over my shirt, my new shirt just prepared for the wedding.

W: Well, don't worry. It looks just OK now.

M: Yeah. Luckily, I had another white shirt, so I changed. Now, look at me. Am I OK all over?

W: Definitely. Uh, wait a moment ! John, is there a place around here where I could get a pair of pants cleaned quickly?

M: There's a one-hour dry cleaner in the Shell Building on Madison. It's about two blocks from here.

W: So, it's close. That's good. And which one is the Shell Building?

M: It's that big, glass office building just past the park. But why ask all these questions about the dry cleaner?

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertis
ement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4: 00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5: 00, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45 minutes lunch break. Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes wait not enough time left to make thing happened on Tuesday, and again the next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say be had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took me 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

The man learned ______ that there would be a concert last Friday.

A.over the radio

B.from one of his workmates

C.from the newspaper

D.from his friends
