听力原文: Next time you bring your kids in for a checkup, don't be surprised if the doctor asks about their tastes in entertainment. The American Academy of Medicine suggested last week that doctors work with parents to evaluate how much TV kids watch and what they see, what video and computer games they play, which websites they visit on the Internet, whether they view R-rated videos without the company of their parents, what music they like and what books they read. Doctors are worried that kids who spend too much time in front of the TV set don't get enough exercise and can become overweight. The academy is also concerned that the message kids get from entertainment media can make them more violent and sexually active.

The academy recommends that children under age two not watch any TV. "Children need activities to stimulate the brain during the first two years of life," says Doctor Mitten Baron, who chairs the academy's committee on public education. "They need feedback and socialization." Elder children, she says, should watch TV in a common area. Their bedrooms should be "electronic media-free zones", where they can have a quiet place to read, study, play or just relax.

(23)

A.How much exercise they get every day.

B.What they are most worried about.

C.How long their parents accompany them daily.

D.What entertainment they are interested in.

听力原文: In ancient societies sick people had to rely on medicine men and witch doctors. (Some people still rely on them.) It was believed that a person was sick because he had been attacked by evil spirits. The witch doctor's job was to drive off those spirits. His technique involved a combination of three methods. The first method was religious. He chanted magic words and good luck charms. He thought these words and charms had the power over the evil spirits. Secondly, he fed the patient some mixtures. These mixtures were often filthy and disgusting, to make the evil spirits so uncomfortable that they would gladly run away.

The third method was to give the patient medicines prepared from certain plants and herbs. From our point of view, this was the only method that had any value. Modern scientific study has shown that some of these remedies had real usefulness in curing sickness or relieving pain.

Among the most enduring of all horrors is the prospect of a slow, painful death. Those who
witness the protracted terminal illness of a friend or relative often view the eventual death more as a relief than a tragedy.

But to make life-or-death decisions on behalf of a dying person unable to communicate his or her wishes is to enter a moral and legal minefield. Could a doctor be sued for withholding treatment and allowing someone to dieor for not allowing him or her to die? Could it ever be lawful to withhold food and water?

Legal moves are afoot which may settle these questions. Recently, a group on voluntary euthanasia proposed legislation to make documents known as "Advance Directives", or Living Wills, legally binding.

An Advance Directive sets out the kind of medical treatment a person wishes to receive, or not receive, should he or she ever be in a condition that prevents them expressing those wishes. Such documents, much in vogue in the US and some Commonwealth countries, are becoming increasingly popular in Britain.

A clear distinction must be drawn between actions requested by an Advance Directive, and active euthanasia, or "mercy killing". A doctor who took a positive step such as giving a lethal injection-to help a patient die would, as the law stands, be guilty of murder or aiding and abetting suicide, depending on the circumstances.

An Advance Directive, however, requests only passive euthanasia: the withholding of medical treatment aimed solely at sustaining the life of a patient who is terminally ill or a vegetable. The definition of medical treatment, in such circumstances, can include food and water. The enforceability of the Advance Directive stems from the notion, long accepted in English law, that a person who is both old enough to make an informed decision and compos mentis, is entitled to refuse any medical treatment offered by a doctor, even if that refusal leads to the person's death. A doctor who forces treatment on a patient against his or her wishes is, therefore, guilty of an assault. Case law exists in the US and several Commonwealth countries that extends this right of autonomy over one's life to patients who write an Advance Directive refusing treatment and subsequently lose their previously made instructions any differently.

It will be a relief over the death of a friend or a relative if the friend or relative dies from ______.

A.a traffic accident

B.an acute infectious disease

C.heart attack

D.a three-year coma (昏迷)

听力原文: Welcome to physiology 100. I'm doctor Ann Roberts. l think everyone here is the sophomore since this is the nursing department's second year physiology course. If you are first year nursing students, please see me after class about transfering to the introductory course. OK, I'd like to begin my first lecture by introducing two important terms: vitalism versus mechanism. How many of you've heard these terms? Oh, I see someone of you has! Well, vitalism and mechanism are two completely opposed approaches to human physiology. According to the vitalist, the laws of the physics and chemistry alone cannot explain the processes of life. To the vitalist, there is a so- called "vital force" and this "vital force" is totally separated from mental energy. As you may have guessed, vitalism is a kind of philosophical approach. Mechanism, on the other hand, is the view that all life phenomena, no matter how complex, can be explained according to chemical and physical laws, since we can support mechanism through scientific experimentations. The modem scientist tends to be a mechanist, but vitalism is not totally dismissed especially in feel, such as brain physiology. There are terms, such as human consciousness, that haven't been defined by physical and chemical terms. I recently read an interesting article that deals with the variant question that whether the mind is separated from the brain or whether the chemical is in the physiological working of the brain. I'd like to continue with this next time and so we can speak more details. I have some copies of that article and I want you to take them home and read them for next week.

Stress at Work and Still Healthy The term could yet become the word of the year; stress i
s on everyone’s lips these days and everywhere. Not only managers, officials and teachers are complaining nowadays, housewives, children and pensioners now also have their own problems. They too sacrifice themselves for others, feel under-or overworked and quickly lose their inner balance. Irritation, tiredness and exhaustion quickly follow. But that is only the negative aspect. Stress, after all, is also linked to positive terms such as joy of life, tension and vitality(活力).

“Firstly, stress is healthy,” says Wolfgang Stehling from Eltvelle. The doctor and management consultant says:” It occurs when the body loses its inner balance, but then stress hormones are produced to re-establish the balance.” Thus stress is nothing more than a positive reaction of the body to pressure. It is unavoidable as part of our nature: ”There is no such thing as a stress-free life.”

But whether stress leads to tensions in the mind or to tenseness of the muscles depends on the duration(持续时间), its cause or causes and the sufferer’s personal situation. People who have trouble sleeping or suffer from bad moods or simply the flu will not be on top of the world and will take every little strife as negative stress. Others, people who feel refreshed at every new turn, are relaxed and successful, will view a difficult round of negotiations or competition at work more as a positive challenge than a cross to bear.

Exercise, healthy eating and relaxing are thus the three pillars by which stress can be conquered almost every time. These factors form. a unit, explains Marita Voelker-Albert, spokeswoman for the government’s Nutrition Advice Center in Cologne. Its campaign “Gut Drauf” (Feeling Good) is targeted at young people. The government agency’s research suggests that three out of four adolescents feel tired, overtaxed(负担过重)and under stress. Eating disorders and complaints such as migraines(偏头痛)and indigestion(消化不良),nervousness and concentration problems have increased among 12- to 16-year-olds.

But even the best solutions don’t work if they are not put into practice, says Stehling. Anybody who goes jogging regularly, practices yoga(瑜伽功)and prescribes good literature as a cure for negative stress, may well end up under more pressure as he tries to find the time for it all. Sometimes, says the consultant, it helps to take time out to reduce stress levels over a weekend.

听力原文: That afternoon Molly almost danced along the street, as she walked home with her
father from the station. They had seen Mrs. Gibson and Cynthia off to London. She wished her stepmother would take herself off to London much more often.

"Well now, dad." she said, "I'm going to have you all to myself for a whole week. You must be very obedient."

"I hope you aren't going to boss me, Molly. You're walking me out of breath already. We mustn't pass Mrs. Goodmays in our hurry."

They crossed the street to Mrs. Goodmays, one of the doctor's patients.

"We've just been seeing my wife and her daughter off to London. They've gone up for a week."

"Dear me, to London, and only for a week!" said Mrs. Goodmays, with surprise. "It seems hardly worth the packing. It'll be lonely for you, Molly, without your stepsister."

"Yes," said Molly, suddenly feeling as if she ought to have taken this view of the ease.

"I'll miss Cynthia."

"And you, Dr. Gibson. I hope you won't feel like a widower once again. You must come and have supper with me one evening. What about Tuesday?"

Dr. Gibson felt a sharp blow on his leg from the toe of Molly's shoes, but even so he accepted the invitation, much to the old lady's satisfaction.

A moment later, Molly said to him, "How could you go and waste one of our precious evenings? We've got five now, I've been planning all sorts of things for us to do together."

What were Molly's feelings as they walked home?

A.She wished she had gone to London too.

B.She was delighted to be alone with her father,

C.She was looking forward to Mrs. Gibson's return.

D.She hated being apart from Cynthia.
