One basic weakness in a conservation system based wholly on economic motives is that most

members of the land community have no economic value. Yet these creatures are members of the biotic community. If its stability depends on its integrity, they are entitled to continuance. When one of these non-economic categories is threatened, and, if we happen to love it, we invent excuses to give it economic importance. At the beginning of century, songbirds were supposed to be disappearing. Scientists jumped to the rescue with some distinctly shaky evidence to the effect that insects would eat us up if birds failed to control them. The evidence had to be economic in order to be valid. It is painful to read these roundabout accounts today. We have no land ethic yet, but we have at least drawn nearer the point of admitting that birds should continue as a matter of intrinsic right, regardless of the presence or absence of economic advantage to us.

?Read the article below about small high-tech firms.

?For each question 31—40, write one word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

SMALL HIGH-TECH FIRMS

The problems of small high-tech firms have attracted a lot of attention recently. Research shows that many of these firms are built BY talented, creative scientists. Their owners have no trouble coming (31) with innovative products but they often can't build on their early success.

One reason (32) this is that they don't have much management expertise. Therefore, they are unable (33) develop the strategies which are necessary for their company's growth. They are (34) a rush to develop products, and don’t think enough (35) how to market them. When they do try to sell their products, they spend too much time trying to gain the trust of potential customers. Another mistake they make is to underprice their products so that they have no finance (36) future development.

Once the firms begin to grow, their owners underestimate the future costs of developing and marketing new products. Lack (37) financial planning is a major weakness of such companies. It is difficult for the high-tech firm to attract the right personnel because it cannot offer the same job security (38) a large organization. The high tech firm can get round some of these problems by developing a specialist image. It can aim (39) a particular segment of the market. Customers then start seeking (40) the firm, se its marketing costs are reduced. The only drawback is that it may take some time before customers accept the firm's new technology.

Enthusiasm, bright ideas, venture capital and technology are not enough to ensure success. Basic management skills—especially financial and marketing ones—are also vital.

You must have been troubled by when to say "I love you" because it is one of the greatest
puzzles in our life.

What if you say it first and your partner doesn' t love you back? Or if they do say it but you don't feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be nerve-racking(紧张) and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn't it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand first?

"A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sidney Crown. "But love is seldom equal." All relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. "That feeling of 'I' ve always loved you more' may be subverted(颠覆,破坏) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大声争吵)." In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. "The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings," says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. "The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says 'I love you' first may also be the one who says 'I' m bored with you' first. " Hall believes that much depends on how "I love you" is said and the motivation of the person saying it. "Is it said when they' re drunk? Is it said before their partner flies off on holiday, and what it really means is 'Please don't be unfaithful to me' ? By saying 'I love you', they really saying 'Do you love me?' If so, wouldn' t it just be more honest to say that?" Collins agrees that intention is everything. "It' s not what is said, but how it' s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.

What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The importance of "I love you".

B.The meaning of "I love you".

C.The time of saying "I love you".

D.The place of saying "I love you".

听力原文: The human nose has given to the languages of the world many interesting expressi
ons.Of course, this is not surprising.Without the nose,we could not breathe nor smell. It is a part of the face that gives a person special character.Cyrano de Bergerac said that a large nose showed a great man courageous, courteous, manly, and intellectual.

A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal,a French philosopher, made an interesting comment about Cleopatra's nose.If it had been shorter,he said,it would have changed the whole face of the world!

Historically, man's nose has had a principal role in his imagination.Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions.Expressions concerning the nose refer to human weakness:anger, pride, jealousy and revenge.

In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example,to hold up one's nose expresses a basic human feeling—pride.People can hold up their noses at people, things, and places.

The phrase,to be led around by the nose, shows man's weakness.A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him.On the other hand,a person who follows his nose lets his instinct guide him.

For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase to have one's nose put out of joint is very descriptive. The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a rival.Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new.It was used by Erasmus in 1542.

This is only a sampling of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are a number of others. However,it should be as plain as the nose on your face that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling!

What is this passage mainly about?

A.The human nose as an organ for breathing and smelling.

B.The nose providing us with various expressions.

C.A woman poet's wish to have two noses.

D.Interesting comments made on Cleopatra's nose.

D

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I could make it home for the holidays. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have three-day passes posted.l was one of the lucky soldiers. It was Christmas Eve when I arrived home, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see be- yond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors, and ornaments(装饰物) shining against the green of a pine. "Where did it come from?" I asked.

"I asked the Gates boy to cut it," my mother said. "I wouldn't have had one just for myself, but when called-oh, such a rush ! He just brought it in this afternoon... " The pine reached to the

proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Krystal Star was in its place. A few green

branches reached about a little awkwardly(不够美观地) at the side, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the pleasant smell of Christmas. "It's not like the ones you used to find," my mother went on. "Yours were always in good shape,l suppose the Gates boy didn't know where to look. But I couldn't be fussy(挑剔的) . "

"Don't worry," I told her. "It's perfect. " It wasn't, of course, but at the moment I realized

something for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.

69. From the passage, we can infer that_________

[A] the writer spent his first Christmas during the war

[B] soldiers did not all go home for Christmas during the war

[C] all the soldiers had three-day passes

[D] the writer could not go home for Christmas
