When Geoff Marcy was 14, his parents bought him a telescope. Every night, he would go onto

the roof outside his window to see the wonders of the sky.

"What excited me most was whether there were planets (行星)in other solar (太阳的) systems where life might exist," he says. "I decided to try to find planets orbiting (沿......轨道运行) other stars like our Sun."

And he did. "My fellow researcher, Paul Butler, and I found our first planet in 1995," Dr. Marcy says. "We worked for ten years without finding anything! But we stuck with it, and our patience paid off."

Since then, the two scientists have discovered 65 of the more than 100 planets found orbiting other stars. Dr. Marcy and Dr. Butler also spotted the first "family" of three planets. In June 2002 they announced another discovery: a Jupiter-like (像木星一样的) planet orbiting star 55 Caned. At first, the two researchers found only planets that orbit close to stars. Recently, the scientists found planets farther out. The planet orbiting 55 Cancri is a major breakthrough: it is the first sighting of a large gas planet about the same distance from the star as Jupiter is from the Sun. Why is this important? Scientists think that life on Earth may exist because of two special features (征) in our solar system. The first is Jupiter.

"Because it's so big, Jupiter pulls comets and asteroids (小行星), or they all come and hit the Earth." Dr. Marcy explains. "Without Jupiter, life on Earth would likely have been destroyed." A second feature is that Earth is a rocky planet where liquid water, which is necessary for life, can exist. Unlike gas planets, rocky planets like Earth have surfaces where water can gather in pools and seas, which may support life. A huge space exists between the Jupiter-like planet and two other planets that lie close to 55 Caneri. Is there an Earth-like planet in the space, too small for us to notice? If so, says Dr. Marcy, "We would have two striking similarities to our solar system: a Jupiter-like planet and an Earth-like planet. And there may be life!"

What can we learn about Dr. Marcy from the passage?

A.He is fond of watching Jupiter.

B.He is from a scientist family.

C.He dislikes working with Paul Butler.

D.He is interested in finding life in outer space.

Turning around a fast-food chain

Sparrow is a well-established fast-food chain, with 200 restaurants run by franchisees, and almost as many company-owned ones. Some years ago, the group to which Sparrow belonged was taken over by another company, which owned a variety of retail businesses. Although demand for a Sparrow franchise showed no sign of declining, overall the chain was in an unhealthy state. Its properties, the majority of them in small towns, needed refurbishment to stand comparison with its competitors. With more and more fast-food concepts reaching the marker, the distinctive Sparrow menu had to struggle for attention. And to make matters worse, its new owners had bought it as one of a number of companies, and had no plans to give it the investment it required.

Sparrow stagnated for another two years, until a new chief executive, Carl Pearson, decided to build up its market share. He commissioned a survey, which showed that consumers who already used Sparrow restaurants were overwhelmingly positive about the chain, while customers of other fast-food chains, particularly those selling pizzas or hamburgers, were reluctant to be tempted away from them. Sparrow had to develop a new promotional campaign - one that would enhance-the public's perceptions of the chain and set it apart from its competitors.

Pearson faced a battle over the future of the Sparrow brand. The chain's owner now favoured taking Sparrow's outlets upmarket and rebranding them as Marcy's restaurants, one of its other, better known brands. Pearson resisted, arguing for an advertising campaign designed to convince customers that visits to Sparrow restaurants were fun. Such an attempt to establish a positive relationship between a company and the general public was unusual for that time. Pearson strongly believed that numbers were the key to success, rather than customers' spending power. His arguments won the day.

The campaign itself broke some of the fast-food industry's advertising conventions. The television commercials played down traditional product shots - most of its competitors' advertisements had mouth- watering shots of food - and focused instead on entertainment and humour. The usual jingles gave way to spots featuring original songs performed by a variety of stars. Instead of trying to show the superiority of a specific product, the intention was to position Sparrow in the hearts of potential customers.

Pearson hired two advertising agencies to handle this campaign, and spent a considerable time with them, discussing and developing the brief he had outlined. Once that had been agreed in detail, he left them m get on with their work. Instead of dividing responsibilities, as would normally happen when two agencies collaborate, they decided to develop a team concept, with both having equal opportunities for creative input.

Pearson also made other decisions which he believed would contribute to the new Sparrow image. He laid off 400 employees in the headquarters and company field offices, and reduced the management hierarchy. He insisted on uniformity of standards in all restaurants, and warned franchisees that if they ran untidy, unprofitable restaurants, Sparrow would dose them, or if necessary, buy them. In addition Sparrow offered to lower the rent of any franchisees who achieved a certain increase in their turnover.

These efforts paid off, and Sparrow soon became one of the most successful fast-food chains in the regions where it operates.

According to the first paragraph, what problem did Sparrow face when it was taken over?

A.Its new owners were uninterested in spending money on it.

B.Its products were too similar to those of its competitors.

C.It received few applications from potential franchisees.

D.It had a number of restaurants which were poorly situated.

Christmas Eve arrives at my house each year. The center of the celebration is dinner. My m
other spends days preparing a rich variety of seafood. The guest list seldom changes. It is made up of my aunt, Marcy and her husband, my oldest brother, Sal, his wife, and their four children, my sister, Joann, her husband, and their two children, and my second brother, Richard, his wife, and their two children.

My aunt and uncle always come heavily loaded with enough food and wine for a whole army. My brother Sal and the gang usually show up an hour early and empty-handed. Joann's family is usually late while Richard's group generally arrives on time, bearing gifts for everyone. I am in charge of getting the Christmas tree. Plenty of food is served at the dinner table, and all the hours of preparation are wolfed down in a matter of minutes. Along with the yearly repeated menu comes the yearly repeated conversation.

Everyone talks about how good the food tastes. My mother then talks about all the supermarkets from which the fish was bought. This begins our period of comparison shopping. For at least 30 minutes, we show how better we are than each other at mentioning the bargains we have found.

Personally, I do not feel the need to be with a crowd on Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve, to me, is a quiet time, a time to think deeply. The over-crowdedness and noise ruin my feelings about Christmas.

What does the underlined word "gang" (Line 2, Para. 2 ) probably mean?

A.The rest of the guests.

B.Sal's family members.

C.The writer and her mother.

D.The children of the guests.

Every spring migrating salmon return to British Columbia's rivers to spawn. And every spri
ng new reports detail fresh disasters that befall them. This year is no different. The fisheries committee of Canada' s House of Commons and a former chief justice of British Columbia, Bryan Williams, have just examined separately why 1. 3 m sockeye salmon mysteriously "disappeared" from the famed Fraser river fishery in 2004. Their conclusions point to a politically explosive conflict between the survival of salmon and the rights of First Nations, as Canadians call Indians.

In 2004, only about 524,000 salmon are thought to have returned to the spawning grounds, barely more than a quarter the number who made it four years earlier. High water temperatures may have killed many. The House of Commons also lambasted the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for poor scientific data, and for failing to enforce catch levels. Four similar reports since 1992 have called for the department's reform. In vain. its senior officials are "in denial" about its failings, said the committee.

Mr Williams' report added a more shocking twist. He concluded that illegal fishing on the Fraser river is "rampant and out of control", with "no-go" zones where fisheries of ricers are told not to confront Indian poachers for fear of violence. The judge complained that the DFO withheld a report by one of its investigators which detailed extensive poaching and sale of salmon by members of the Cheam First Nation, some of whom were armed.

Some First Nations claim an unrestricted right to fish and sell their catch. Canada's constitution acknowledges the aboriginal right to fish for food and for social and ceremonial needs, but not a general commercial right. On the Fraser, however, the DFO has granted Indians a special commercial fishery. To some Indians, even that is not enough.

Both reports called for more funds for the DFO, to improve data collection and enforcement. They also recommended returning to a single legal regime for commercial fishing applying to all Canadians.

On April 14th, Geoff Regan, the federal fisheries minister, responded to two previous reports from a year ago. One, from a First Nations group, suggested giving natives a rising share of the catch. The other proposed a new quota system for fishing licenses, and the conclusion of long-standing talks on treaties, including fishing rights, with First Nations. Mr Regan said his department would spend this year consulting "stakeholders" (natives, commercial and sport fishermen). It will also launch pilot projects aimed at improving conservation, enforcement and First Nations' access to fisheries.

The "explosive conflict" in Para 1 refers to ______.

A.salmon's return to spawn and its survival

B.The fisheries committee of Canada's House of Commons and Bryan Williams

C.the struggle between sockeye salmon and human beings

D.the collision between salmon's survival and human fishery
