听力原文:American scientists have found that some birds are more intelligent than experts

听力原文: American scientists have found that some birds are more intelligent than experts had originally believed. The scientists say birds have abilities that involve communication and different kinds of memory. In some unusual cases, their abilities seem better than those of humans.

Griffin is a Grey parrot. He lives in his laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Griffin can arrange objects in order of size. He can also combine words in the right order. For example, he will combine words when asking for a piece of food.

Some birds have other memory skills. For example, they collect and store thousands of seeds in autumn, and find them later in winter. These birds use natural objects to find the seeds they have stored. They use at least three objects, such as rocks or trees, to find the stored seeds.

A jay can be trained to choose one object instead of another. The bird uses this skill to receive a prize, such as food.Scientists also say some birds can learn as many as two thousand different songs. They say songs may have developed as a way for birds to communicate with other birds.

Scientists believe that birds must have a special guidance system in their brain. Understanding how a bird's brain operates may help us better understand how a human brain processes information.

(26)

A.Talking.

B.Communication and memory.

C.Singing.

D.Finding the way.

听力原文: Most people think of astronomers as people who spend their time in cold observatories peering through telescope every night. In fact, a typical, astronomer spends most of his or her time analyzing data and may only be at the telescope a few weeks of the year. Some astronomers work on purely theoretical problems and never use a telescope at all. You night not know how rarely images are viewed directly through telescopes. The most common way to observe the skies is to photograph them. The process is very simple. First, a photographic plate is coated with a lightsensitive material. The plate is positioned so that the image received by the telescope is recorded on it. Then, the image cam he developed, enlarged and published so that many people can study it. Because most astronomical objects are very remote, the light we receive from them is rather feeble. But by using a telescope as a camera, long time exposures can be made. In this way objects can be photographed that are a hundred times tm faint to be seen by just looking through a telescope.

(20)

A.They devote a lot of time to theoretical problems.

B.They spend most of their time looking through telescopes.

C.They are constantly analyzing data.

D.They often live near observatories.

Standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a ma
jority of the speakers of a language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. As such, these words and expressions are well defined and listed in standard dictionaries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and idioms that are understood by almost all speakers of a language and used in informal speech or writing, but not considered appropriate for more formal situations. Almost all idiomatic expressions are colloquial language. Slang, however, refers to words and expressions understood by a large number of speakers but not accepted as good, formal usage by the majority. Colloquial expressions and even slang may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified. Both colloquial usage and slang are more common in speech than in writing.

Colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. Some slang also passes into standard speech, but other slang expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. In some cases, the majority never accepts certain slang phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories. Every generation seems to require its own set of words to describe familiar objects and events.

It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the creation of a large body of slang expressions. First, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and situations in the society; second, a diverse population with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the subgroups and the majority population.

Finally, it is worth noticed that the terms "standard" "colloquial" and "slang" exist only as abstract labels for scholars who study language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of any language will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang expressions. Most speakers of English will, during appropriate situations, select and use all three types of expressions.

How many categories can language be classified into?

A.One.

B.Two.

C.Three.

D.Four.

Radar (雷达)

1. Children enjoy shouting at a high wall and hearing the sound come back to them. These sounds are called echoes (回声). Echoes have given us a number of 'valuable tools.

2. Echo sounding devices were early used in making maps of the ocean floor. Sounds or Ultrasonic (超声的) sounds make good tools for determining how deep the water is under ships. Sometimes echoes from ultrasonic distance finding devices were prevented from working by fish swimming past or by the presence of large objects. So ultrasonic devices have been replaced by other tools.

3. Radar is now a familiar tool. Like many others it was ah unexpected discovery. It was first observed by two researchers, who were studying sound communication. They were sending signals from a station on one side of a river in Washington, D .C. to a vehicle across the river. They discovered that their signals were stopped by passing ships. They recognized the importance of this discovery at once.

4. All this was of course just a start, from which our present radar has developed. The word "radar," in fact, gets its name from the term "radio detection (检测) and ranging." "Ranging" is the term for detection of the distance between an object and the radar set. Today, in our scientific age, it would be difficult to manage without radar.

5. One of the many uses of radar is as a speed control device on highways. When a person in an automobile is driving faster than the speed limit, radar will show this clearly and the traffic police can take measures to stop him.

6. A pilot cannot fly a plane by sight alone. Many conditions such as flying at night and landing in dense fog require the pilot to use radar. Human eyes are not very good at determining speeds of approaching objects, but radar can show the pi lot how fast nearby planes are moving.
