Dear Ted,

At last my dream has come true. I know you will be glad to learn that we have bought a house, for you know how much I've wanted this to happen. We're very happy. We have a small vegetable garden. Each of the children has claimed a little square of it, and I can see now that even if we have nothing else to eat, we'll have plenty of radishes.

How I wish that you could come and visit! If there is any possibility, do make every effort. We can make you comfortable, and it would be a joy to have you with us. You can visit on any time.

I've always told you about my problems, and I wanted you to share my happiness, too.

Affectionately,

Helen

Why does Helen write to Ted?

A.Because Helen wants to tell her troubles to Ted.

B.Because Helen wants to share her new house's happiness to Ted.

C.Because Helen wants to visit Ted on weekend.

D.Because Helen wants to have a garden just like Ted's.

Dear Mrs. Michaels, November 7, 20__

I received your e-mail last week, stating that you will not require my services for the upcoming tax year. (141) came as a surprise to me, as I have always provided you with timely service. My records show that your company received a large refund from the government last year.

I understand that you, like many small business owners, (142) to use a do-it-yourself tax kit this year. While this method may seem less expensive because it saves money on an accountant's fees, there are hidden costs. It takes a lot of time to gather all the data needed to prepare your own taxes. I hope you will think (143) your decision to forego professional accounting services this year. If you do change your mind about this, I would be more than happy to provide you with the same efficient and accurate service that I have in years past. Sincerely,

Dear Sir,

I am writing 【C1】______ a strong complaint about the 【C2】______ treatment my guests, my colleague and I received when we visited your restaurant last Friday evening. On hooking a table for four by telephone on Tuesday we were 【C3】______ that there would be room for us despite the fact that you had only been 【C4】______ for a few weeks and were already booked.

We appreciate that there must be great 【C5】______ for restaurant meals at this time of the year in such a popular and 【C6】______ area but we were not expecting such an ill-mannered reception on the part of your head waiter.

Our Chinese friends are currently touring the "Shakespeare country" and were looking forward to a traditional English dinner in such a charming setting. But our hopes 【C7】______ an enjoyable evening out were instantly spoilt when your head waiter informed us that he had received no booking in our name and, so, no table was 【C8】______ for our party. Your staff then offered us a table which we all had to share with another couple and no effort was made to 【C9】______ the unpleasantness we had experienced. We also had to wait some 【C10】______ time before the menu was brought to us.

I trust you will give this complaint your prompt attention as the whole embarrassing incident was a great. disappointment to our guests and sets a bad example of our English hospitality.

Yours sincerely,

听力原文:W: Excuse me. My watch stopped running and I'm not sure what's wrong with it.

M: Well, let me look at it.

W: OK. It's a new watch. I've only had it for about a year.

M: Hmmm, it seems that it just needs a new battery. They only last about a year, you know.

W: Oh. That's a relief. I was hoping it wouldn't be broken or something. In fact, last week I got some water on it and I was afraid that the water might have ruined it. How much is a new battery?

M: It's six ninety-nine plus tax for a battery.

W: Oh dear, that seems like a lot. I thought my friend said she paid about three ninety-nine plus tax for a battery.

M: Well, she may have. But we are a watch-repair shop and we install your battery and then guarantee it for a year. If you have the watch cleaned here, we guarantee it for an additional three months.

W: Well, I guess you get what you pay for. I'll get my battery here. How long will it take to put it in?

M: Usually I can do it right away, but right now I'm way behind in my repair of a large shipment of watches. They all need to be fixed by this afternoon. Can you leave your watch here until about 5:00 p. m. ?

W: Oh dear, I'm afraid I can't. I need to get back to work and I have to work this evening, so I couldn't pick it up by five. And I have to have it by tomorrow.

M: Well, then maybe I can just squeeze it in now. It'll only take a few minutes. Can you wait?

W: Oh, I'd really appreciate that. Sure, I'll wait.

M: OK. Just sit down over there. I'll have it fixed in a few minutes.

W: Thanks a lot.

What is the problem with the woman's watch?

A.It needs cleaning.

B.It needs regular servicing.

C.It needs a new battery.

听力原文:M: Can you spare a moment, dear? I want you to listen to this letter.

W: Go ahead, then.

M: Dear Sir, my wife and I arrived home last night after a holiday arranged by your firm. We stayed at the hotel described in your brochure as a comfortable, medium-sized hotel, with a magnificent view of the sea, offering courteous, old fashioned service arid excellent food, served in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

W: Yes, that's what the brochure said.

M: In fact the hotel is situated at least half a mile from the sea.

W: Through the gates of which motor vehicles were constantly arriving.

M: Yes, that's good. The food was strictly fish and chips. Wine was available, but at expensive prices, and the majority of the staff were foreigners and actually incapable of speaking or understanding English.

W: Yes, that's quite true.

M: In addition to this, we were most unhappy with the arrangements for our journey home. We were instructed to catch the 11. 00 am ship, but this was delayed and we did not get away till 6 o'clock in the evening. Now that our holiday is over, it seems pointless writing this letter, but I should like you to know that we were most disappointed with the hotel and travel arrangements. Yours faithfully, Herbert Wilson.

W: Yes dear, that's a very good letter.

Dear Mr. Blank:

Last October I signed a contract with your company for the installation of dry walls and the renovation of a bathroom in my home at the above address. I am now appealing to you to have this work completed in a satisfactory manner.

I have spoken to your Quincy, Mass, store manager on several occasions, to the plumbing department manager, to your maintenance people, and to anyone else who seemed to be in a position to assist in completing the work. I have received considerate responses followed by service people trying to do the necessary work.

Nevertheless, I have had expensive broadloom rugs badly stained; I have had water pour through my kitchen ceiling at least six times after your people left my home with everything supposedly in order; and I now again have leaks, grout falling out, and other defects. I have experienced nothing but trouble with your workmanship and materials from the outlet. I will illustrate with detail--an incomplete list--which your records should confirm.

1. An expensive vanity was delivered with doors assembled upside down and doors catches not functioning properly.

2. The dry wall work was left in such rough condition that your installers had to return several times. In some areas sanding was overlooked; in others, dry wall taping was not used, and molding was left incomplete. (The next few paragraphs listed additional defects.)

Mr. Blank, I had your service people come to the house at least six were denials of responsibility. Children were blamed, etc. And in each case, it was finally established that the installation was faulty. At this writing, water is again leaking to the floor below when the shower is used.

Frankly, I believe I have reached the point of no return in dealing with your local staff.

I now want to have my bathroom completed in a workmanlike manner, even if it means removing the entire installation. In the event that any removal is necessary, I will not accept a patched-up finish.

For a job that costs about 2,500, your performance has been outrageously bad. I expect the courtesy of a prompt reply from you, and the necessary inspections and corrections from qualified personnel.

Sincerely yours,

Howard Gerber

What does "vanity" mean?

B.Fair for cosmetic.

C.Dining table.
