"Because we all live in hope of becoming white badges." In this sentence "white badges" re

fers to______.

A.former presidents

B.senior journalists

C.leading academics

D.chief executives

答案

D
解析:这是道细节题。解题句子是“Why does anyone put up with being treated like this?”asked a Financial Times correspondent. “Because we all live in hope of becoming white badges,” he said,“Then we'll know what's really going on.”(一个金融时报的记者问:“你怎么能容忍这种待遇呢?”他说:“因为我们都希望成为白带子,这样我们就知道里面到底是什么了。)文中可以看出位子是留给white badges坐的,指的就是chief executives。

听力原文: As city residents, we all think that we know what the word "city" means, but do we really (32) ? Here are some interesting facts.

In Britain, a town of any size can be called a city, if it has a cathedral. So London today includes the two cities of London and Westminster, because both parts have a cathedral (33) . But a small place in North Wales called St. Asaph has a population of fewer than 4,000 and yet because it has a cathedral it is also called a city. on the other hand, Birmingham was so large that it was specially made into a city, even though it did not have a cathedral (34) .

In the USA, "city" is simply a legal term, and it does not depend on the size or importance of the place. Confusingly, however, the US Census Bureau, an American government department that conducts official counts of the population, classifies any place with a population of over 2,500 as a city, no matter how far out in the countryside it is.

The world's most densely populated city is the area of Japan that includes Tokyo and Yokohama, which has an estimated 29,272,000 inhabitants (34) . But, in the future, it may well be replaced by a city in China or a city in India.

So, what is a city? It all depends on where you live.

(33)

A.US census officials.

B.Government employees,

C.People who live in the city.

D.Lawyers who work for the Church.

Without the atmosphere, there would be no weather, no wind, rain, snow, or clouds. Air is
all around us; we live at the bottom of a great ocean of air. It is invisible, but we can feel it when it moves. There are miles of all above us, pressing down with great weight on the earth and everything on it. Because air presses down on us from all directions at the same time, and because we are able to bear (忍受) this weight, we do not seem to feel it. But scientists have proved that air has this weight, and that anything that has weight creates (产生) a force called pressure. As changes in air pressure take place, they make air move.

Air is a gas that expands (膨胀) when heated, gets lighter, and moves upward. When air is

cooled, it gets heavier, sinks close to the earth's surface, and flows like water in a great river. As warm air rises, cold air rashes to take its place. Thus winds originate (起源). Tile winds that blow high above us are caused by the warmer air running away from colder air. The wind we feel near the earth's surface is the heavy colder air trying hard to catch the warmer air. Changes in temperature cause the air to move. And of course there are many changes, so air movements are taking place practically all the time.

The first paragraph mainly tells us______.

A.why we don't feel air

B.why atmosphere is important to us

C.why there is air surrounding us

D.why there is air pressure

Step Back in Time

Do you know that we live a lot longer now than the people who were born before us? One hundred years ago the average woman lived to be 45. But now, she can live until at least 80.

One of the main reasons for people living longer is that we know how to look after ourselves better. We know which foods are good for us and what we have to eat to make sure our bodies get all the healthy things they need.We know why we sometimes get ill and what to do to get better again. And we know how important it is to do lots of exercise to keep our hearts beating healthily.

But in order that we don"t slip back into bad habits, let"s have a look at what life was like 100 years ago.

Families had between 15 and 20 children, although many babies didn"t live long.Children suffered from lots of diseases, especially tickets (佝偻病 ) and scurvy (坏血病) , which are both caused by bad diets. This is because many families were very poor and not able to feed their children well.

Really poor families who lived in crowded cities like London and Manchester often slept standing up,bending over a piece of string, because there was no room for them to lie down.

People didn"t have fridges until the 1920s. They kept fresh food cold by storing it on windowsills (窗台板 ) , blocks of ice, or even burying it in the garden.

Some children had to start work at the age of seven or eight to earn money for their parents. If you had lived 100 years ago, you might well be selling matchsticks (火柴杆) (a job done by many children ) or working with your dad by now.

Text 2

Bacteria are microscopic organisms which live on the surface of objects. They are one of the most ancient living things, which exist on this planet for nearly 4,000 million years. Do you know the size of bacteria? It can only be measured in microns. Maybe you have not a standard in your mind how long a micron is. One micron is a thousandth of a millimeter, which equals about the diameter of a pinhead. Therefore, even if we enlarged the rounded bacter:ium a thousand times, it would only be the size of a pinhead. We barely see bacteria by a magnification an ordinary microscope of 100 times, even if we try, we cannot make out anything of their structure. There are normally millions of them together, for they can multiply really fast.

Scientists have found that some bacteria have attached to wavy-looking "hairs" called flagella. The flagella rotate, pushing the bacteria through the water. Others can glide along over surfaces by some little-understood mechanism. Bacteria are so small that they are influenced by the movements of the chemical molecules around them. They are active all the time. Even the bacteria without flagella often bound about in the water. They are pushed here and there, colliding with the watery molecules.

Bacteria cannot be detected because they don't produce bad odor or change the color or texture of the food. Therefore, when people eat the food with many bacteria, they are likely to get hepatitis A, acute gastroenteritis and a host of other illnesses. Many households have refrigerators to prevent from bacteria. Of course, freezing food slows or stops the growth of bacteria, however, when food is thawed, the bacteria will become reactivated. Bacteria can not be totally destroyed before the food is thoroughly cooked. We need to know that not all bacteria are in connection with illness.Just some bacteria can cause disease. They are called pathogenic bacteria. Fortunately our immune system can protect us from them.

Bacteria are prokaryotes (single cells that do not contain a nucleus). It may seem weird to classify organisms according to such details, but with or without a nucleus is not trivial at all. The division between prokaryotes and eukaryotes (all organisms with a nucleus inside their cells) is of extreme importance in biology, and is the result of a major evolutionary breakthrough. Visit our program tomorrow if you want to know more, thank you.

46. Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?

[A] Bacteria are as big as a pinhead.

[B] Bacteria can not be seen by an ordinary microscope.

[C] Bacteria are hard to see because they often live together.

[ D] Bacteria are very small so they can only be measured in microns.
