Since 1066 the blood of many other races has been added to the original English mixture. N

ot only have Welsh, Scots and Irishmen made their homes in England, but also Jews, Russians, Germans—people from almost every country in Europe—as well as many West Indians, Indians: and others from the Commonwealth (英联邦).

As the English are such a mixed people, local customs and accents in England vary a great deal and local pride. is still strong in some parts of the country. Both Leonard Townsend and Herbert Perkins al- ways think of themselves as Northerners, although they have moved to the south. Leonard is as proud of being a Yorkshire man as Iran Macdonald is of being a Scot (苏格兰人).

The closer one gets to London, the less one notices such differences, for London is a melting-pot. People from all over Britain and from all over the world pour into the giant city. London tends to ' melt down' and smooth out strong accents and local customs. Every year the influence of London spreads fur-her and further into the country, north, south, east and west, but particularly into the south and south- east. In an effort to stop London from spreading any more, new overspill towns are being built forty to filly miles outside London. London from are encouraged to move to a new town, or at least to open new branches there instead of in another part of London. This policy is now beginning to have results. Until recently the greater London region had a population of twelve million, but this figure is starting to drop.

Which of the following is NOT the meaning of the sentence "Since 1066 the blood ... "in Para. 1?

A.People from other countries have settled down in England.

B.Many foreigners have died and been buried in England.

C.Foreign people have immigrated into England.

D.People from other countries have become Englishmen.

听力原文: Today, as AIDS licks the whole world, we should no longer term it as taboo, but
take a scientific view of it.

AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death among persons between ages 25 and 44 in the United States. About 47 million people worldwide have been infected with HI~ since the start of the epidemic.

AIDS stands for "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome". It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV). AIDS is the final and most serious stage of HIV disease, in which the signs and symptoms of severe immune deficiency have developed.

HIV has been found in saliva, tears, nervous system tissue, blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. However, only blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk have been proven to transmit infection to others.

Transmission of the virus occurs through sexual contact, blood transfusions or needle sharing, and from mother to child. A pregnant woman can passively transmit the virus to her fetus, or a nursing mother can transmit it to her baby.

Other transmission methods are rare and include accidental needle injury, artificial insemination through donated semen, and through a donated organ.

HIV infection is not spread by casual contact such as hugging and touching, by touching dishes, doorknobs, or by mosquitoes. It is not transmitted to a person who donates Blood or organs. However, it can be transmitted to the person receiving blood or organs from an infected donor. This is why blood banks and organ donor programs screen donors' blood and tissues thoroughly.

How many people worldwide have been infected with HIV since the start of the epidemic?

A.47 million.

B.4 billion.

C.25 million.

D.44 million.

One of medicine's fundamental beliefs about pregnancy and the development of the human fet
us has been challenged. Until recently, it was thought that the fetus was a parasite capable of extracting all the nutrients it needed from the mother. It is now realized that adequate nutrition during the entire course of the pregnancy is necessary for proper fetal development.

In early pregnancy, certain changes occur in the mother's gastrointestinal tract, resulting in more efficient absorption of specific nutrients, such as iron and calcium. Furthermore, the maternal blood supply increases, so that nutrients can be transported via the uterine and placental blood systems: If the mother is undernourished, this "lifeline" to the fetus will be inadequately developed. Finally, fat is accumulated within the body to store the energy necessary for lactation (milk production), This preparation for lactation is so important that if the mother is inadequately nourished, it will take place even at the expense of fetal growth. It is a logical developmental occurrence, since in the natural world, no infant can survive without successful breastfeeding, and thus fetal growth is less of a priority.

According to the passage, which of the following is required for lactation?

A.Fat storage.

B.Iron and calcium.

C.Increased blood supply.

D.A well-nourished placenta.

听力原文:Donating blood plasma has always been a noble pursuit to help those in need. Sinc
e last September, there has been an upsurge in blood donations, as the need has become more emphasized and more empathized. But if you've had a tattoo or piercing within the last year, you will more than likely be turned away from any blood bank.

When you go to a blood bank to give plasma, they ask you a series of questions to determine if you are eligible to donate. Obviously, they don't want to risk accepting contaminated blood, so they will ask about your sexual history, current health status and other related questions, including whether or not you have gotten a tattoo or piercing within the last 12 months.

All blood that is donated is screened for disease such as HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis and other common blood- born ailments.

However, it goes without saying that it is a waste of the blood bank's and the donor's time to harvest blood that is tainted and thus worthless.

So, in order to avoid wasted time, they ask these questions to screen the potential donor. And although even I would be quick to say that tattooing and piercing are much safer than some medical professionals like to indicate, there is still always a chance of getting and carrying a disease unknowingly from a tattoo or piercing, especially Hepatitis. That has been the object of many heated arguments and stringent regulations.

If you should happen to contract a disease from a tattoo or piercing, it should show up in a screening after 12 months, which is the reason for the waiting period. Yes, maybe it's a little over-precautious, but would you want to be the one on the receiving end of dirty blood? If there, is even a chance, it is better to be safe than sorry.

There is evidence that the usual variety of high blood pressure is, in part, a family dise
ase. Since families have similar genes as well as similar environment, family diseases could be due to shared genetic influences, to shared environmental factors, or to both. For some years, the role of one's environmental factor commonly shared by families, namely, dietary salt, has been studied at Brookhaven National Laboratory. These studies suggest that chronic excess salt ingestion can lead to high blood pressure in man and animals. Some individuals, however, and some rats consume large amounts of salt without developing high blood pressure. No matter how strictly all environmental factors were controlled in these experiments, some salt - fed animals never develop hypertension whereas a few rapidly developed very severe hypertension followed by early death. These marked variations were interpreted to result from differences in genetic constitution.

By mating in successive generations only those animals that failed to develop hypertension from salt ingestion, a resistant strain (the" R" strain) has been evolved in which consumption of large quantities of salt fails to influence the blood pressure significantly. In contrast, by mating only animals that quickly develop hypertension from salt, a sensitive strain ("S" strain) has also been developed.

The availability of these two strains permits investigations not heretofore possible. They provide a plausible laboratory model on which to investigate some clinical aspects of the human proto - types of hypertension. More important, there might be the possibility of developing methods by which genetic susceptibility of human beings to high blood pressure can be defined without waiting for its appearance.

Which statement relates the main idea of this passage?

A.When salt is added to their diets, rats and men react in much the same way.

B.The near future will see a cure for high blood pressure.

C.Modem research has shown that high blood pressure is a result of salt in the diet.

D.A tendency toward high blood pressure may be a hereditary factor.

Leukemia

Leukemia is the most common type of cancer kids get, but it is still very rare. Leukemia involves the blood and blood-forming organs, such as the bone marrow. (46)

A kid with leukemia produces lots of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow. Usually, white blood cells fight infection, but the white blood cells in a person with leukemia don't work the way they're supposed to. (47) The abnormal white blood cells multiply out of control, filling the bone marrow and making it hard for enough normal, infection-fighting white blood cells to form. Other blood cells—such as red blood cells (that carry oxygen in the blood to the body's tissues) and platelets (that allow blood to clot)—are also crowded out by the white blood cells of leukemia. These cancer cells may also move to other parts of the body, including the bloodstream, where they continue to multiply and build up.

Although leukemia can make kids sick, most of the time it is treatable, and kids get better. Almost all leukemia patients are treated with chemotherapy, which means using anti-cancer drugs. (48) Chemotherapy quickly goes to work, traveling through the blood to the bone marrow. There, the drugs can attack the cancer cells. After several weeks of chemotherapy, many kids begin to feel better.

Some children with leukemia will also have radiation therapy, too. (49)

If the cancer isn't getting better from usual amounts of chemotherapy and radiation, then a kid with leukemia Will probably need more treatment—with higher doses of chemotherapy and radiation to finally kill the cancer cells. But this heavy-duty treatment will also harm the normal cells in the kid's bone marrow too, and the bone marrow will no longer be able to produce normal blood ceils. So, doctors will then give a kid—or anyone else with bone marrow that is no longer working—normal bone marrow tissue from someone else who is healthy. (50)

A. The chemotherapy drugs are given through a catheter, a narrow tube that is inserted into a blood vessel, sometimes in the kid's upper chest.

B. Early symptoms of leukemia are often overlooked, since they may resemble symptoms of the flu or other common diseases.

C. This is a special procedure called a bone marrow transplant, and it helps the patient make new blood cells so they can recover from the leukemia.

D. Bone marrow is the innermost part of some bones where blood ceils are first made.

E. They don't protect the person from infections very well.
