听力原文:M: Who do you work for at the moment, Ms Mann?

W: Um, I work for the BBC World Service.

M: Ah, and how long have you worked for the BBC?

W: I've been with the BBC for five years. Yes, exactly five years.

M: And how long have you been their German correspondent?

W: For two years.

M: And what did you do before the BBC?

W: I worked as an interpreter for the European Union.

M: As you know, this job is based in Geneva. Have you ever lived abroad before?

W: Oh, yes, yes, I have.

M: And when did you live abroad?

W: Well, in fact, I was born in Argentina and I lived there until I was eleven. Also, I lived and worked in Brussels for two years when I was working for the E.U.

M: Mmm...That's interesting. Have you traveled much?

W: Oh yes, yes, indeed. I've traveled all over western and eastern Europe, and I've also been to many parts of South America.

M: Mmm... And why did you go to these places?

W: Well, mostly for pleasure, but three years ago I went back to Argentina to cover various political stories for the BBC.

听力原文: In Britain, just after the main television news programs, audience figures rise. It' s weather forecast time. The BBC broadcasts 44 live forecasts a day, 443 hours of weather a year, using forecasters from the Meteorological Office. The Office makes predictions about the weather seven days in advance. These are based on observations from the ground, from satellites and from radar. The observations are stored in a computer that can do up to 4,000 million calculations a second.

In Britain the weather is news. The BBC forecasters are professional meteorologists, but they do not have an easy job. They are the only presenters on television who do not use a script, and they cannot see the map that they are describing. Viewers are often critical, especially of female presenters. One woman left her job after rude letters and press reports about her clothes.

The British talk about weather more than almost any other subjects, so it is a surprise to discover that 70 percent of television viewers cannot remember what they saw on the weather forecasts. "What happens is that people like watching and hearing the forecasts, but they probably only take real notice when they need to--when they' re going on holiday or wondering what the weather will be like for the tennis at Wimbledon," says one forecaster. "Or, of course, when we make mistakes!"

During the Second World War, Winston Churchill was the British Prima Minister. One day he had to go to the British Broadcasting Corporation (the BBC) to make an important speech to the nation. 第4题

It often seems that everyone in Britain has a mobile phone. We use them as alarm clocks, c
alculators, to help with exam revision, to pay city congestion charges, to send photos of ourselves on holiday with our new 3G phone--and even to talk with other people. And that's where the problems can start.

Firstly when do you use them? The etiquette of using mobiles is changing. Originally people turned away when speaking with someone. Now they'll just talk about anything from work to romance to when they'll be home--at the top of their voices--without anyone minding. Or not minding much. Or--OK being too polite to say they can't stand the fact that person sitting next to them on the train is talking about last night's party while they're trying to read the paper.

Secondly, when do you not use them? In Britain, the answer to that is simple. You don't use a mobile phone---except with a fixed hands free set--while you're driving. A new law came into force at the end of 2003. Anyone caught using a hand--held mobile while driving risks a fixed penalty of £30 or a fine of up to £1,000 if convicted plus three points on their licence.

However, not everyone takes note of the law and the police have been prosecuting drivers for breaking it. The worst offenders are people living in South West Scotland. BBC transport correspondent Tom Symonds says that over 800 have been caught in Strathclyde compared to just 17 in Suffolk. (It's not clear whether that means that Scots have more friends or are just worse drivers!)

Finally, do try not to lose your mobile. It's not the phone itself which matters--it's easy enough to replace a handset. But your SIM card is another matter. It has all your contacts stored on it. And without your contacts list--well, who could you phone?

The passage mainly discusses ______.

A.the advantages and disadvantages of using the mobile phone

B.the manners of using the mobile phone

C.the problems brought by the mobile phone

D.the development of the mobile phone industry

听力原文: The day started badly, I woke up late because I forgot about the alarm clock the night be- fore. I got dressed in five minutes and called a taxi to go to the airport. Thirty minutes later the taxi had still not arrived. I called the taxi company, and they explained that the taxi broke down. So, I decided to take my own car to Heathrow, picked up my bag and left the house. But when I got in the car, the engine wouldn't start. I realized that 1 left the headlights on last night. I decided to try the taxi company again, but when I put my hand in my pocket, my telephone wasn't there. I left it in the kitchen so I 'went back inside to get it. I opened the door and could' hear the radio, which I forgot to switch off. "This is the BBC News at eight o'clock on Sunday the seventh of April," I heard. "Eight o'clock," I thought, "but it's only seven o'clock," and I looked at my watch to check. Suddenly, I remembered. It was eight o'clock! The clocks changed that week- end! There was no point going to the airport now. The plane had already taken off. But as I sat there listening to the news, I realized how lucky I had been. A plane crashed just after take-off at Heathrow, and it was feared that all 217 people aboard died.

(30)

A.Because the taxi company was very busy at that time.

B.Because it was too late to call the taxi company.

C.Because he enjoyed driving by himself.

Autonomous robots are able to move and decide by themselves. At a simple level, these can
include robot vacuum cleaners that "decide" what to react to human behaviors without human intervention.

The University of the West of England's David McGoran takes his Heart Robot on a touchy feely tour, allowing it to come face to face with a spider-like robot built by Matt Denton of Micromagic Systems. Both robots are being displayed at the London Science Museum until July 31st.

The heart robot that "enjoys" being hugged and stroked could be among the first robots to signify a new era of "emotional machines" used for medical treatment and enjoyment, according to one of its inventors.

It has a beating heart which rises when the body is shaken, but slows down when treated calmly. In addition, Heart's eyes flutter in response to touch.

David McGoran, of the University of the West of England, predicts the part-puppet, part-machine creation he helped develop is an example of how robots will increasingly adopt human characteristics. "Right now we're seeing the first implementations in toys, "he told BBC News. "There are little robotic dinosaurs. There's a new robotic toy from the film Wall-E that's coming out, and that's a very expressive robot." Nevertheless he believes there could be major implications for social care, with research already taking place into giving elderly care homes robots that express emotions.

"This raises really interesting social and ethical questions," said Mr. McGoran. He added that there could be many benefits, particularly for people taking medical treatment. "If scientists can put this natural interface into robots then it would be much easier for us to relate to robots. "

The Heart Robot is on display alongside a face-tracking insect-like robot. The "ic Hexapod" by Micromagic Systems has been programmed to recognize human facial features and follow people as they move around. It tracks human faces and takes photos. Like the Heart Robot, it is billed as an example of the increasingly sophisticated ways in which machines are able to recognize and mimic human behavior.

Mr. McGoran went to London because______.

A.he wants to take his robot on a touchy feely tour

B.he wants to see Matt Denton

C.he wants to show the spider-like robot

D.heart robot will be displayed there
