听力原文:Little old ladies competing at dumpling-making contests, butchers chopping large

chunks of meat basketballs by the dozen. Five million people a week shop at Wal-Mart stores in China. And if the American retailer has its way, there will soon be millions more. The company is said to. be close to buying a retail chain there that could make it the biggest food and department store network in the country. The Wall Street Journal quotes sources saying the world's largest retailer has agreed to buy the retail stores of Trust-Mart, a Taiwanese supermarket chain for 1 billion dollars. Ever since China opened the door to international competition, foreign and domestic retailers have been slugging it out to dominate the world's fastest growing economy. Wal-Mart says in 20 years it hopes to be as big in China as it is in the United States. One major difference: Wal-Mart allows labor unions into nearly all its Chinese stores, something it's loath to do in the US. But as in the US, Wal-Mart intends to make its presence and discounts known across the Chinese countryside.

What's not true about Trust-mart?

A.It's a Taiwanese supermarket chain.

B.The world largest retailer has agreed to buy Trust-Mart.

C.Wal-Mart will buy Trust-Mart for 1 billion yuan.

D.Buying Trust-Mart will make Wal-Mart the biggest food and department store network in China.

听力原文:M: May I help you?

W: Yes, I want to buy some shoes to replace the ones I'm wearing.

M: What's wrong with them?

W: They are too old and shabby.

M: I can see they have simply been worn out. Would you like the same colour, more or less?

W: Yes, and something a little less casual.

M: How about this light brown pair? They are similar to what you have, but a little bit dressier.

W: Yes, I was thinking of something along that line. I'll try them on.

M: They certainly look charming.

W: The trouble is, they feel uncomfortable.

M: Then try on this other pair in a similar style, but by a different manufacturer.

W: These are much better. Do you have them in red?

M: Yes. Would you like both pairs?

W: Yes, if they won't cost too much.

M: Oh, no, they won't. The second pair is half puce. Shall I put them both in a box for you?

W: Just the red. And the old ones. I'll wear the new brown pair home.

听力原文:Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally.

听力原文: Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally. His works were received enthusiastically both in England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of the most successful writers of his time in either country, delighting a large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the US.

The respect with which he was held was partly owing to the man himself, with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his gracious manners, his pleasant spirits, his artistic integrity, his love of both the Old World and the New. Thackeray described Irving as "a gentleman, who, though himself born in a very high sphere, was most finished, polished, witty, socially the equal of the most refined Europeans." In England he was granted an honorary degree from Oxford—an unusual honor for a citizen of a young, uncultured nation— and he received the medal of the Royal Society of literature; America made him ambassador to Spain.

Irving's background provides little to explain his literary achievements. A gifted but delicate child, he had little formal schooling. He Studied law, but without zeal, and never did practice seriously. He was immune to his strict Presbyterian home environment, frequenting both social gatherings and the theatre.

听力原文: One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own lifestyles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up,. they are expected to live in the same area as their parent, to marry people that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry--or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.

In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the diversion between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.

Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society, the knowledge of a lifetime may become dated overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.

A.one.

听力原文:The debate about the impact of cinema on teenage minds is as old as filmmaking it

听力原文: The debate about the impact of cinema on teenage minds is as old as filmmaking itself. Protecting children from depravity was the main goal of censors in the early 20th century, and yet there is very little conclusive proof that films either harm or benefit young minds. However, simple common sense tells us they must have some kind of influence.

Perhaps the most obvious effect is in the area of body image. Movie stars, with their make-up, tailored costumes and special lighting, are images of perfection. Teenagers developing their own personal physical image see these people as role models. Girls seek slim figures, boys yearn for strong muscles, and everyone hopes for a fairy-tale romance with a happy ending.

But without the physical trainers, expensive nutritionists and filmmaking trickery, it's almost impossible to achieve these ideals. For a teen, this disparity can lead to low self-esteem, behavioral problems, and eating disorders.

In order to appeal to wide audiences, mainstream movies contain stereotypes that reinforce prejudices and may encourage cruel behavior. toward so-called outsiders.

Despite the influence of films on teen attitudes, researchers over the past 50 years have never proven a link between movie violence and teen behavior. They have consistently found that teenagers can tell the difference between the fantasy violence in films and the real violence in the world around them.

(23)

A.Film: a Major Entertainment for Youth.

B.Controversies over Film-making.

C.Influence of Movies on Teenagers.

D.Suitable Movies for Teenagers.
