By the looking-glass self, Cooley meant the self-image that each of us develops according to the messages we receive from others; we think and behave according to our understanding of those messages. If, for example, a young girl is repeatedly told that she is pretty, she will come to believe that: (1) she is in fact pretty, and (2) being pretty is an important thing in her life. Similarly, if she is told that she is not good (or not expected to be good) at certain things such as math, she will come to believe that she is not good at such things and would be better off working at things she can be successful at. The likely product is a young woman who devotes a great deal of attention to her appearance, regards being pretty as a key to success in life, and who is intimidated by anything connected with numbers.
Since we know that young girls are given messages like these, and that young boys are given different messages, we can see a good part of how sex roles are taught. There is little or no evidence of differences in what young girls and young boys can do, but the older children become, the greater the differences in the areas in which boys and girls are interested.
According to the passage, if one is given a certain message about himself or herself time and again, he or she will ______.
A.regard it as important in all his or her life
B.pay much attention to his or her appearance
C.find it believable and then behave accordingly
D.make it known to others to see whether it is true

Boys, for example, generally are better than gifts at mathematical ideas involving objects and their relationships. Boys are also generally better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for bail sports. Girls, on the other hand, generally start speaking earlier than boys. And they generally see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages.
What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected by nerve tracks. The left side is generally used for mathematics, speech and reading. The right side is used for artistic creation and the expression of emotions. In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for example, it's the area used for mathematics. In girls, it is the area used for language skills. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man's brain are connected by a smaller number of nerves than the two sides of a woman's brain are. So the flow of information between the halves of a man's brain is more restricted than that between the halves of a woman's brain. Some scientists say this influences some of our abilities.
According to the speaker, what is one of the advantages of girls?
A.They have better ideas about objects and their relationships.
B.They have more flexible hands and eyes.
C.They can see better than boys at night.
D.They can express their emotions better than boys.

We have a rather small house, with only one spare (多余的) bedroom. You can imagine (想象) our alarm (惊恐) when Aunt Clara wrote to say that she was coming with her children to stay for the weekend. Her family was not a small one, with four boys all under the age of twelve.
I sent off a telegram (电报) at once, explaining that our house was too small. Aunt Clara called us up the next morning. "I forgot to mention (提到) to you, "she said in her sweetest voice, "the boys will be bringing their tents (帐篷) . "
Even so, my wife was still worried. It was true we had a large garden, but there was still the problem of feeding (喂养) four growing boys.
"And what if it rains? " she added.
Luckily Saturday morning turned out to be bright and clear when I went to the station to meet Aunt Clara. I pushed the boys, together with the luggage (行李) , into the back of the car, with great difficulty of course. The youngest sat in front, with Aunt Clara and me.
On the way home. I talked over the shoulder (肩) to David, the eldest boy, "I didn't see your tents among your luggage"
"The tents! " cried David. " My God! We left them at home."
We were not glad to have Aunt Clara's family with us because ______.
A.she and four boys
B.our house was small
C.it was the weekend
D.her family was not small
