Questions are based on the following passage.

Young people tend to be critical of their parents at times and blame them for most ofthe misunderstandings between them. I think it is true that parents often underestimate theirteenage children and also(36)how they themselves felt when young.

For example, young people like doing things on spur of the moment: it is one of theirways of showing that they can accept a(37). Older people worry more(38); most ofthem plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to beupset by something(39).

So my advice to you is this: when you want to borrow the family car or get your mother tomend something for you, you will have better success ifyou can possibly ask in advance.

Young people also make it harder for their parents to trust them because they liketo(40)them. They say things like "Everybody we know drives at ninety miles anhour", or "We"ve all decided we won"t study for our final examinations —— it"s(41)"Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles,in entertainers and music. This is not their main(42). They feel cut off from the adultworld, into which they have not yet been accepted. So they(43)a culture and society oftheir own. Then, if it tums out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes orhairstyles irritate their parents, this gives them(44)enjoyment. They feel they are(45),at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style. and taste.

Why Would They Falsely Confess?

Why on earth would an innocent person falsely confess to committing a crime? To mostpeople, it just doesn"t seem logical. But it is logical, say experts, if you understand what can happen in a police interrogation (审讯) room. Under the right conditions, people"s minds are susceptible (易受影响的) to influence, and the pressure put on suspects during police grillings(盘问) is enormous. __________ (46) "Thepressure is important to understand. Because, otherwise, it"s impossible to understand whysomeone would say he did something he didn"t do.

The answer is: to put an end to anuncomfortable situation that will continue until he does confess." Developmental psychologist Allison Redlich recently conducted a laboratorydetermine how likely people are to confess to things they didn"t do. __________ (47) The researchers then intentionally crashed the computers and accused the participants of hittingthe "alt" key to see if they would sign a statement falsely taking responsibility.

Redlich"s findings clearly demonstrate how easy it can be to get people to falsely confess: 59 percent of the young adults in the experiment immediately confessed __________ (48) Of the 15-to-16-year-olds, 72 percent signed confessions, as did 78 percent of the 12-to-13-year-olds.

"There"s no question that young people are more at risk," says Saul Kassin, Professor at Williams College, who has done similar studies with similar results. __________ (49) Both Kassin and Redlich note that the entire "interrogation" in their experiments consisted of a simple accusation——not hours of aggressive questioning—— and still, most participants falsely confessed. Because of the stress of a police interrogation, they conclude, suspects can becomeconvinced that falsely confessing is the easiest way out of a bad situation. __________ (50)

C."It"s a little like somebody"s working on them with a dental (牙齿的 ) drill," says Franklin Zimring, a law professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

D."But adults are highly vulnerable too."

E.How could an innocent person admit to doing something he didn"t do?

F.Redlich also found that the younger the participant, the more likely a false confession.

Questions are based on the following passage.

It is not unusual today for old people to spoil their grandchildren with toys and sweetsand to(36)to their aggressive demands. It is natural that old people adore (爱) their grand-children, but is not normal that this adoration should go so far as to create little emperorsand empresses. Such adoration has a(37)effect on the children"s personalities and moralstandards. A survey of 152 such families found that 88 percent of grandparents admittedthat they tended to yield to their grandchildren"s every request, especially if the childrenhad resorted to tears.

It seems that when children are told off by their parents or teachers, their elder relativesinterfere protecting and comforting the children. When the children are(38)to do somefamily chores (杂物),59 percent of the old people said they would invariably (总是) do itfor them. Some grandparents would even go to(39)to sweep floors and wash windows fortheir grandchildren.

It has become usual that when little boys and girls get good(40)in examinations, theirgrandparents reward them. As a result, the children have come to take these favours forgranted and have become less(41)towards others.

Parents and teachers have all appealed to old people to be(42)for the sake of futuregenerations.

The problems of these spoiled children can be(43). First, parents and grandparentsshould understand that their(44)is to train the children to become both self-controlledand self-reliant. Second, they should allow the children to be more independent. And third, young parents should(45)with the old instead of leaving the grandparents entirely respon-sible to raise the children.
