第5题

When the women I met at college thought about the joys and privileges of men, they did not
carry in their minds the sort of men I had known in my childhood. They thought of their fathers, who were bankers, physicians, architects, stockbrokers, the big wheels of the big cities. These fathers rode the train to work or drove cars that cost more than any of my childhood houses. They were attended from morning to night by female helpers, wives and nurses and secretaries. They were never laid off, never short of cash at months end, never lined up for welfare. These fathers made decisions that mattered. They ran the world. The daughters of such men wanted to share in this power, this glory. So did I. They yearned for a say over their future, for jobs worthy of their abilities, for the right to live at peace, unmolested, whole. Yes, I thought, yes, yes. The difference between me and these daughters was that they saw me, because of my sex, as destined from birth to become like their fathers, and therefore as an enemy to their desires. But I knew better. I wasnt an enemy, in fact or in feeling. I was an ally. If I had known, then, how to tell them so, would they have believed me? Would they now?

Escaping from the Earth

The Earth has a force that pulls things toward itself. We call this force gravity(地心引力). This is something we live with all the time, and we take it for granted and hardly ever think about it. But it is a most important factor in rocket operation and must be overcome if we are to get anywhere in space, or off the ground at all.

Take the throwing of a ball as an example. The harder the ball is thrown, the faster and higher it will go. What is the secret? Its speed. If we could throw the ball hard enough it would go up and up forever and never come down. The speed at which it would have to be thrown to do this is known as escape speed. Of course, we cannot throw a ball hard enough because the speed required to escape completely from the Earth's gravity is seven miles per second, or over twenty-five thousand miles per hour.

Once escape speed has been reached by a spacecraft(宇宙飞船), no further power is needed. A rocket aimed at the Moon, for instance, will "coast"(滑行) the rest of the way because the Earth's gravity cannot then pull it back, and there is no air resistance(阻力) in space to slow it down. This "coasting" is known as "free fall". That does not mean the rocket is falling down towards the Earth but that it is traveling freely in space without the aid of power, like a bicycle coasting downhill.

Free fall is an important feature of space travel: it would be impossible to carry enough fuel to provide powered flight all the time.

What is the most important factor for a rocket to escape from the Earth?

A.To travel as fast as it can.

B.To overcome the Earth gravity.

C.To get away from the air resistance.

D.To have strong power in its operation.

Americans' use of cell phones has increased so quickly that wireless networks are becoming
overloaded, causing a growing number of customers to complain about calls that are inaudible or are cut off or are never connected in some places.

And things could get worse before they get better, industry experts say, because even as cell phone companies are rolling out fancy features like digital photography and Internet-based games, they are not capable of spending the money needed to improve basic service.

"This is a situation in which the wireless industry is a victim of its own success," said James D. Schlichtinga deputy chief at the Federal Communications Commission.

Many of the industry's service problems are a result of a huge growth of new customers. The surge in users in overwhelming the capacity to handle calls on wireless systems whether be- cause local transmitters are too few or too small, or because the local airwaves have become too crowded and carriers are unable to obtain larger radio frequencies.

The problems are compounded by basic economics. Customers have been attracted by tile plunge in prices for wireless service. The average per-minute cost has dropped to 11 cents this year from 56 cents in 1995. For the phone companies that has meant a decline in average revenue per customer to $61 a month, from $ 74 in 1995. And so, just when the wireless companies need to invest more money to accommodate all those new users, the companies are under increased financial strain. As a result, the complaints are piling up.

The percentage of all wireless subscribers who have called customer-service centers at least once in the last year to complain about service or because they had other problems has climbed to 61 per cent, from 53 per cent in 2000, according to J. D. Power & Associates, a company that measures customer satisfaction in many industries and sells it to the companies. being scrutinized. Another industry problem is the sheer technical complexity of sending and receiving wireless calls. Unlike conventional telephone systems, in which every customer is hardwired to the network, wireless systems rely on a delicate mesh of thousands of antenna towers, which often face resistance from local governments and cellular stations.

According to the passage, the complaints of American customers about the cell phone are showed in the following statements EXCEPT ______.

A.they can not listen to the voice clearly

B.the phone is cut off while they are communicating

C.the prices for wireless service are high

D.the cell phone is never connected in some places
