Section B

听力原文:M: I really appreciate your filling me in on yesterday's lecture.

W: No problem. I thought you might want to go over it together. And, anyway, it helps me review, Hope you're feeling better now.

M: I am. Thanks. So, you said she talked about squid? Sounds a little strange.

W: Well, actually, it was about the evolution of sea life--a continuation from last week. The octopus and the squid descended from earlier creatures with shells. They survived by shedding their shells--somewhere between 200 and 500 million years ago.

M: That's a pretty long span. of time.

W: I know. That's what she said, though. To be precise: "Exactly when they emerged is uncertain ... and why is still unexplained."

M: Some squid are really huge. Can you imagine something that big if it still had a shell?

W: Actually, it's because they lost their shells that they could evolve to a bigger size.

M: Makes sense. But some are really huge. I've read about fishermen that caught squid that weighed over a ton. Did she talk about how that happens?

W: Not really. But she did mention some unusual eases. In 1933 in New Zealand they caught a squid.., let's see here.., it was twenty-two yards long. Its eyes were eighteen inches across. Can you imagine?

M: Reminds me of all those stories of sea monsters.

W: Dr. Simpson thinks there are probably even larger ones that haven't been found because squid are intelligent and fast---so they can easily get away from humans. Maybe some of those monster stories are true.

Childhood exposure to a group of chemicals, which are used widely in a variety of products
, including water-resistant clothing and microwave popcorn, could reduce the effectiveness of common vaccines, a new study has found. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston looked at over 580 children and found that those who had higher concentrations of these perfluorinated(全氟化的)compounds(PFCs)in their blood had lower immune responses to diphtheria(白喉)and tetanus(破伤风)vaccinations. An insufficient immune response to a vaccine can mean a child is actually vulnerable to catching a disease even though they have been vaccinated against it, the researchers said. " When we take our kids to the doctors office to get their shots, we expect that the vaccines are going to work. What we found was that there was an increasing risk that they didnt work if the kids had been exposed to the PFCs," study author Philippe Grand-jean was quoted as saying by Live Science.

What makes the childrens common vaccines less effective according to the new study?

A.The exposure of chemicals they used in childhood.

B.The reduction of a series of chemicals in childhood.

C.Childhood consumption of chemical products.

D.Childhood contact with chemical products.

听力原文:Seems like there is good news for Americans who like to tip one bacchic at happy
hour or relax with a glass of wine after work. A recent study by two economists shows drinkers earn more than teetotalers. In fact the data that published in a journal of labor research shows drinkers earn 10%-14% more than people who avoid alcohol altogether. The researchers say this disparity in pay might be explained by the fact drinkers have wider social networks. They argue this enables drinkers to get better jobs and business opportunities, truly increase social capital. But the study has its critics, they point out the researchers founded their work with money from libertarian think tank the Reason Foundation. That group has been fighting in- creased regulation and taxation of alcohol around the country. The authors of the study do point out social drinking has its limits. Having more than 21 servings of alcohol a week they say actually reduces earning potential. One could say all things in moderation.

Why do drinkers earn more than teetotalers according to this passage?

A.Because drinkers have better health.

B.Because drinkers receive more money from social warefare.

C.Because drinkers have wider social networks.

D.Because drinkers are more hard-working.
