Some plan to use the findings to support calls for closing the nuclear reactors at Indian Point(A nuclear power station is U. S. A. ), the plant closest to New York City. But federal officials, some radiation experts and representatives of the nuclear plants and that minute, occasional releases from such plants were much lower than natural radiation levels,
The new statistical study, which is being published in Archives of Environmental Health, was conducted by a group of scientists who for many years have intended to show a link between mortality and illness and low levels of radiation from power plants, bomb tests and other sources.
The study said the infant death rate in communities for two years before the plant shutdowns averaged 8.44 deaths per l, 000 births and, when all the mortality data for two years after the plant shutdowns were combined, the infant mortality rate dropped to 7.01 per l, 000 births. The difference was statistically significant, the authors said, and the drop was greater than the general drop in infant death rates around the country in recent years.
Joseph Mangano, a public health statistician and the national coordinator for the group, said a statistical link does not prove a cause and effect, but points to the need for more work. He said," The list is literally endless. This doesn't mean we've proved anything beyond a shadow of a doubt, but what I will say is we really need to do more follow-up."
The new study was conducted by______.
A.the government
B.radiation experts
C.antinuclear campaigners
D.public health statisticians

听力原文: Thousands of persons die each year after eating or drinking poisonous substances. Experts say most accidental poisonings happen at or near the home. And most are caused by substances we commonly use at home: medical supplies, insect poisons or cleaning fluids. There are several common signs of poisoning. A sudden feeling of pain or sickness. Bums in the area of the mouth. Or an unusual smell coming from a person's mouth.
Health experts generally advise poison victims to drink water or milk. But never give liquids to someone who is not awake or to those having a violent reaction to the poison. Next, seek help from professional medical experts. Save the material expelled from the mouth for doctors to examine. Save the container of the suspected poison to answer questions the doctors may have. The container may also describe a substance that halts the poison's effects. Use this substance without delay.
Health experts say vomiting sometimes may be started if medical advice is delayed. But vomiting should be used only when it is known the victim took too much of what is called a general poison, such as a medicine. The experts suggest never cause vomiting if the victim was poisoned by a petroleum product or by a substance that was a strong acid or strong alkali. These victims should be taken to a medical center as soon as possible.

Vitamin A is necessary for the body's natural defense system against disease. Vitamin A is needed to help prevent skin and other tissues from drying out. It also produces a light-sensitive substance in the eyes.
People who do not get enough Vitamin A cannot see well in the dark. They may develop a condition that dries the eyes. The condition can result in infections that lead to blindness.
A lack of Vitamin A is a major cause of blindness among children. Health experts estimate that 124 million children around the world do not eat enough foods with Vitamin A.
Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil and in the yellow part of eggs. Vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes contain beta carotene, a substance that the body changes into Vitamin A.
Public health campaigns to provide Vitamin A to those who need it have proved costly. And they are not always effective. That has led researchers to try to create foods with the vitamin.
Rice is one of the most common crops grown worldwide. However, normal rice lacks Vitamin A. Researchers at a laboratory in Switzerland found a way to change the genetic material of rice. They added three genes to the rice. The genes produce beta carotene, the chemical that our bodies change into Vitamin A.
The new rice has a golden yellow color. The researchers say 200 grams of the rice have enough beta carotene to provide the necessary amount of Vitamin A.
Biologist Mary Lou Guerinot of Dartmouth College wrote a commentary published with the report in science magazine. She said the rice is an excellent example of the good things that can be done with genetic engineering. However, critics of genetic engineering argue that changing plant genes could increase risks to human health or the environment.
With Vitamin A people won't get any diseases.
