Some African Americans

Some African Americans have had a profound impact on American society, changing many people&39;s views on race, history and politics. The following is a sampling of African Americans who have shaped society and the world with their spirit and their ideals.

Muhammad Ali (Cassius Marcellus Clay ) grew up a devout Baptist in Louisville, Kentucky, learning to fight at age 12 after a police officer suggested he learn to defend himself. Six years later, he was an Olympic boxing champion, going on to win three world heavyweight titles. He became known .as much for his swagger (趾高气扬 ) outside the ring as his movement in it, converting to Islam in 1965, changing his name to Muhammad Ali and refusing to join the US Army on religious grounds. Ali remained popular after his athletic career ended and he developed Parkinson&39;s disease, even lighting the Olympic torch at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

W. E. B. Du Bois (William Edward Burghardt Du Bois ) was born in 1868. This Massachusetts native was one of the most prominent, prolific intellectuals of his time. As an academic, activist and historian, Du Bois co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP ) , edited "The Crisis" magazine and wrote 17 books, four journals and many other scholarly articles. In perhaps his most famous work, "The Souls of Black Folk", published in 1903, he predicted "the problem of 20th century (would be) the problem of the color-line".

Martin Luther King Jr. is considered one of the most powerful and popular leaders of the American civil rights movement. He spearheaded (带头;作先锋 ) a massive, nonviolent initiative of marches, sit-ins, boycotts and demonstrations that profoundly affected Americans&39; attitudes toward race relations. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Black leader Malcolm X spoke out about the concepts of race pride and black nationalism in the early 1960s. He denounced the exploitation of black people by whites and developed a large and dedicated following, which continued even after his death in 1965. Interest in the leader surged again after Spike Lee&39;s 1992 movie "Malcolm X" was released.

In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first black baseball player in the U. S. major leagues. After retirement from baseball in 1957, he remained active in civil rights and youth activities. In 1962, he became the first African-American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Immigration and Problems

Hundreds of thousands of people supporting immigration rights in the US filled streets all over America in early 2006. Many held signs and American flags and asked to be treated as citizens—not criminals. Many of these supported legislation from Senator John McCain that would open a path to citizenship to immigrants who were already in the country illegally. Proposed legislation from other politicians called for stricter measures- including rounding up undocumented immigrants and sending them back to their home countries.

Canadian officials say that immigration applications continue to rise. Some want to keep the doors open. They need the labor. About 400,000 immigrants were allowed into the country in 2005,according to the Canadian Government statistics. However, all this growth means that cities need to adapt. New comers don"t always make a smooth transition into jobs for which they are skilled. So industries are using mentoring (辅导 ) programs to help new immigrants find proper jobs.

With the large numbers of undocumented African immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands and showing no sign of abating (减少), the Spanish Government has decided to get tough. There will be no more mass amnesties (特赦) for illegals, and anyone coming to Spain without permission will be sent back, the government has announced. About 23,000 migrants (移民 ) landed on the islands in2006, and riots have erupted in some crowded reception centers. This has promoted local authorities to appeal to the United Nations for help.

France"s new immigration and integration law gives the government new powers to encourage high-skilled migration. It takes effect in 2007. The new law authorizes the government to identify particular professions where France has a talent shortage. Then the government will help these identified employers find immigrant workers with needed skills or qualifications. The selected foreign employees will be granted "skills and talents" visas, valid for three years. But some people show the concern that it"ll cause brain drain in developing countries.

Many immigrants in the US took to the streets in early 2006, demanding that __________ . 查看材料

A.John McCain be removed

B.they be sent back home

C.they be treated as citizens

D.their culture be protected

根据以下材料,回答题

Tales of the Terrible Past

It is not the job of fiction writers to analyze and interpret history. Yet by writing about the past in a vivid and compelling manner, storytellers can bring earlier eras to life and force readers to consider them seriously. Among those taking on the task of recounting history are some black writers who attempt to examine slavery from different points of view.

Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison deals specifically with the legacy of slavery in her book Beloved. The main character in this novel, a former slave called Sethe, lives in Ohio in the years following the Civil War, but she cannot free herself from her horrific memories. Through a series of flashbacks and bitter reminiscences, the reader learns how and why Sethe escaped from the plantation she had lived on; the fate of her husband, who also tried to escape; and finally, what happened to the child called Beloved. Morrison"s scenes of torture and murder are vivid and strongly convey the desperation of the slaves and the cruelty of their owners.

Charles Johnson"s Middle Passage approaches slavery from a different, yet no less violent, vantage point. His main character, Rutherfprd Calhoun, is a ne"er-do-well free black American who stows away on a slave ship bound for Africa to collect its "cargo". Put to work after he is discovered,Calhoun witnesses firsthand the appalling conditions in which the captured Africans are transported.

When they finally rebel and take over the ship, he finds himself in the middle—— and is forced to come to terms with who he is and what his values are.

Neither Beloved nor Middle Passage is an easy read, but both exemplify African American writers" attempts to bring significant historical situations alive for a modem audience.

This passage is mostly about 查看材料

A.the causes of slavery in America

B.black writers in the late 20th century

C.why Morrison and Johnson wrote the books they did

D.two novels that deal with slavery

What Makes Me the Weight I Am?

There"s no easy answer to this question. Your genetic makeup, the physical traits that get passed down to you from your parents, plays a big part in determining your size and weight.____46____ But if your parents are smaller than average, you may want to rethink that professional basketball career!

The same goes for your body type. Have you ever heard someone say a person is "big boned" ?

It"s a way of saying the person has a large frame, or skeleton. Big bones usually weight more than small bones.____47____

Like your height or body type, your genes have a lot to say about what your weight will be.

But that"s only part of the story. Being overweight can run in someone"s family, but it may not be because of their genes.____48____ And even though some kids gain weight more easily than others, when they eat right and exercise, most kids can be a healthy and happy weight that"s right for them.

It"s true——the way you live can change the way you look.

How much you weight is a balance between the calories you eat and the calories you use.

____49____ If you spend your free time watching TV, your body won"t use as many calories as it would if you played basketball, skated, or went for a walk. If you are in balance, your weight will stay right for you as you grow. But if you eat more and exercise less, you may become overweight.

根据下面材料,回答题。

Sleepless at Night

It was a normal summer night. Humidity (湿气) hung in the thick air. I couldn&39;t go to sleep, partly because of my cold and partly because of my expectations for the next day. My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a surprise.

Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, I gathered enough strength to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright moon hanging in the sky, giving off a magic light.

I couldn&39;t stand the pressure anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel better. I went to the bathroom and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. I cleaned my teeth as if there was no tomorrow. Back and forth, up and down.

Then I walked downstairs to look for some signs of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat frightened me as he meowed (喵喵地唱出) his sad song. He was on the old orange couch (长沙发),sitting up on his front legs, waiting for something to happen. He looked at me as if to show "I&39;m lonely, pet me. I need a good hug (紧抱)." Even the couch begged me to sit on it.

In one movement I settled down onto the soft couch. This couch represented my parents&39; marriage, my birth, and hundreds of other little events.

As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was flooded with questions:

What&39;s life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator&39;s body, I had a new thought; each touch sang a different song.

I forgot all about the heat and the next day&39;s surprise. The atmosphere was so full of warmth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries slowly move away.

The author of the passage could not go to sleep partly because__________. 查看材料

Across the Desert

The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. It stretches across Africa from Senegal to Egypt. The Sahara Desert is an unfriendly environment. During the day it"s very hot, and at night it"s sometimes very cold. It is also difficult to find water in the Sahara.

In 2006, Kevin Lin, Ray Zahab, and Charlie Engle decided to do something very difficult. They made the decision to run across the Sahara Desert—4,300 miles (6,920 km). It seemed impossible to do, but they wanted to try. The three men liked to test themselves, and this would be a very big test.

Then they ran again until 9:30 in the evening. Each day they ran about 40 miles (64 km). Every day it was the same thing. They got up and ran. They listened to music on their iPods, and they ran and ran.

Sometimes it was very windy, and they couldn"t see. One time they got lost. But they didn"t quit. After 111 days, Kevin, Ray,
