Prime Minister Tony Blair and David Beckham were leading a last-minute charm offensive to
secure the 2012 Olympics for London — as a new row flared with leading rival Paris.

Mr Blair hailed the capital's "brilliant" bid to host the games and said the event would provide a "wonderful legacy" for British sport.

He was addressing a reception at the High Commissioner's residence in Singapore, attended by a glittering array of sporting stars led by David and Victoria Beckham.

Mr Blair, speaking alongside Lord Coe and his bid team, told guests: "We are very proud of our country and we feel we can make the Olympic movement proud of this bid as well."

Dignitaries at the event included the Princess Royal, Sir Steve Redgrave, Daley Thompson, Jonathan Edwards, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Denise Lewis, David Hemery. Tanni Grey-Thompson and Sir Bobby Charlton.

French officials were earlier angered by critical comments about the centrepiece Paris stadium— the Stade de France — made by two Australian consultants to the London bid.

Jim Sloman, the former chief operating officer of the Sydney Games, and architect Rod Sheard, had claimed at a press conference that the arena was not ideal for athletics, prompting anger from the Paris bid team.

Though the French team decided not to make an official complaint, relations have been further strained following comments said to have been made by French President Jacques Chirac.

Speaking ahead of the G8 conference in Scotland, the politician reportedly told German and Russian leaders that all Britain has ever done for European agriculture is "mad cow". He is also quoted as telling diplomats: "We can't trust people who have such bad food."

Mr Blair, who is due to head off to the G8 summit in Scotland before Wednesday's International Olympic Committee vote, refused to trade barbs with French president Jacques Chirac.

What does "the event" in paragraph two refer to?

A.London's bid.

B.London hosts the 2012 Olympics.

C.The 2012 Olympics.

D.None of the above.

To: Jakob Skolnik

From: Victoria Williams

Subject: yesterday's awards ceremony

Mr. Skolnik,

We were all concerned about your sudden illness yesterday and hope that you are feeling better today. I know that you will feel reassured to learn that last night's awards ceremony went very well despite your absence. We had Kazadi Koite lead both items 3 and 4, and I am happy to report that he did an excellent job. The CEO of B. J. Technology accepted the award for "most environmentally friendly company" on his company's behalf and expressed great delight on receiving it. The reception was enjoyed by all. We had reserved the room for only three hours, and some guests stayed until the last possible moment. More guests attended than we expected, so we barely had enough room for everyone. Perhaps we should ask for a bigger room next year. Rooms 2 and 3 are also small, but either room 4 or room 6 would be a good size, think. Even though the ceremony and reception were a great success, I have several other ideas for improvements for next year's ceremony. We can discuss them when you return to work. Please rest well. We hope to see you healthy and back at work soon.

第7题

If Australia were folded in half like a book, the Smart Highway would be its spine, forgin
g through emptiness for 2,000 miles. Driving half of it is plenty, so I've flown to the dead center: the desert town of Alice Springs. North of "the Alice" there's barely a stoplight for 1,000 miles-a-bout the distance from Dallas to Chicago-until the asphalt meets Darwin, on the Timor Sea.

Like Germany's autobahn, the Smart has no speed limit; unlike the autobahn, it's virtually barren. Every 45 minutes or so, a roadhouse appears mirage-like on the horizon, offering gas, beer, motel-style. lodging, and a little "Where ya from, mate?" Aside from that, the land presents itself the way God made it. Hour by hour, sandy red earth gives way to spindly trees, brown escarpments, termite mounds as tall as kindergartners, and not much else. No cell phone coverage, no radio stations. There's nowhere else on earth to be so isolated while on good roads in your aver-age rental car.

The pleasure of a Stuart drive is partly in stumbling across artifacts from man's attempts to make use of the bush. Beside the gas station in Barrow Creek (kilometer 294), a wooden telegraph repeater station from the early 1870s stands abandoned but perfectly preserved by the dry desert air. There's another in the expanse north of Tennant Creek (541). Barely rusted bits of telegraph wire and antique bottles still litter the grounds of both. The eerie ruins at Gorrie Airfield (1,103) once housed 6,500 personnel in World War II. Today, there are ghostly scraps of gray bitumen leading to an old fighter runway that's over a mile long.

The walls inside most of the bush pubs along the highway are stapled over with bras, under-wear, foreign currency, and business cards-a few of mine included-left by visitors from around the world. Basic rooms cost about $ 35; given the volume of cold Victoria Bitter on tap, by bed-time most customers aren't in a state to quibble over thread counts. Just about every pit stop is run by someone who could pass as the main character in a novel.

According to the passage, Darwin in the first paragraph is _______.

A.the name of a well-known scientist.

B.the name of an island in Timor Sea.

C.the name of a city standing at the end of the Smart Highway.

D.the name of a pub in the center of Australian desert.

Chinese Buddhist Music Catches Audience in HK

中华佛教音乐吸引香港听众

The Hong Kong Cultural Center in Victoria Bay was packed on Thursday night, and loud applause periodically echoed through the neon lit sky. It was not rock music nor was it pop—it was traditional Chinese Buddhist music that made an instant hit in the modern metropolis.

Hong Kong is the fourth leg of the Buddhist music performance tour by a troupe consisting of more than 130 monks from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. And this is also the first time monks from across the Taiwan Strait had jointly set up a troupe to perform, on global stages.

Crowds of Hong King residents were lining up at the local port waiting to welcome members of the troupe who were sailing in from Macao, where they had just ended another successful performance on Wednesday night.

The monks returned the enthusiasm of the residents with a powerful performance. Almost without sleep, the monks drove to the concert hall preparing the stage and doing the rehearsals.

Buddhist music, which originated from ancient India, found its way into China some 2,000 years ago, and after absorbing elements of traditional Chinese folk music, court music and other religious music, a unique form. which is now called Chinese Buddhist music came into being.

The monks of the troupe come from prestigious Buddhist temples including Fo Guang Shah Temple in Taiwan, Shaolin Temple in central Henan Province, Labrang Temple in northwestern Gansu Province, and General Temple in southwestern Yunnan Province, representing the three branches of Buddhism in China, namely Chinese Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Pali Buddhism.

The wind sweeping across the Victoria Bay was cool, but the atmosphere in the concert hall was hot. The audience was mesmerized by the great variety of genres of Chinese Buddhist music.

"It's great to see so many genres of Chinese Buddhist music performed on the same stage," said a female bank employee surnamed Chang, "It's so fascinating," she said.

Calling it a happy event in Hong Kong, the Venerable Kwok Kuang, president of the Hong Kong Buddhist Association, said that the concert served as a prelude to the display, in Hong Kong on May 26, of a relic from Famen Temple preserved in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

He said that Buddhism and Buddhist music in the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong had the same roots, and through the performance by monks from across the Taiwan Strait, the traditional religious art would be further developed and bring more happiness to the Chinese.

Co-sponsored by the Chinese Buddhism Association of China and Fo Guang Shan Temple in Taiwan, the troupe was formed in February this year and has since staged four successful performances in Taiwan and Macao, and will move on to Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US and Vancouver of Canada from Friday.

Hailing the joint performance as a major event in the history of Buddhism, Hsin Ting, deputy chief of the troupe and abbot of Fo Guang Shan, said that both the monks and the support staff had been working together very harmoniously ever since the formation of the troupe, indicating their inherited strong ties.

"I hope the troupe's tour to North America will help the world community better understand Chinese traditional culture, especially the harmonious relationships among the people across the Taiwan Strait," he said.

How was the Chinese Buddhist music troupe received in Hong Kong?

A.It was welcomed like any other rock or pop music bands.

B.It was not as welcome as rock or pop music bands.

C.It was so welcome that it would visit Hong Kong for the fourth time.

D.It caused a great sensation among the local people.
