Manufacturers have learned that consumers place a high value (150) convenience and disposability. Today, many products — such as cans, bottles, paper napkins, and even paper clothing — are designed and manufactured to be used once and then thrown away. Other consumer goods, ranging from wristwatches and umbrellas to major appliances such as air conditioners and VCRs, are manufactured in (151) a way that it is often cheaper and easier to discard and replace them if they break down than it is to have them (152). A study showed that 26% of the solid waste that is thrown away in the United States consists of items that are designed to be discarded: disposable diapers, throwaway plastic pens and watches, and the like.

Cars Are Good for the Environment, Honest
Britain's motor industry is planning a major publicity campaign to counter what it sees as an official anti-car bias and to improve the environmental image of the cars, according to documents leaked to the pressure group. Friends of the Earth (FOE). 46 .
The internal document which was produced last month by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, says that the “ultimate objective of the campaign must be to protect the longterm commercial freedom of the motor industry and the lifestyle. freedom of car users”.
47 . European car manufacturers have already agreed with the European Commission to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars by 25 per cent to target of 140 grams per kilometre by 2008.
However, the document also reveals that the industry is some way from meeting the target. 48 .
To help control these emissions, the government has proposed replacing the flat rate annual tax on cars with a tax related to engine size so that owners of large gas-guzzler(耗油量大的汽车)would pay more than owners of small cars. 49 .
Richard Barnet, the society's media manager, says:“We will work with the government to practise a practical system. ” 50 .
A The campaign will highlight the motor industry’s efforts to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)
B But the motor industry opposes taxes on persons owning cars preferring taxes on use
C The five-year campaign could cost up to £12 million
D The reason why cars are good for the environment is obvious
E But Ian Willmore of FOE says the industry “may pose as partners of the government, but its real intention is to frustrate serious attempts to reduce traffic levels”
F For example, last year's new cars exceed an average of 192 grams per kilometre — some 37 percent above the target

COMPUTER TRENDS
When analysing the computer market worldwide it is useful is distinguish (31) sales of desktop computers and portable laptop models. The major manufacturers perform. very differently (32) different areas of the market; for example, A.B.I. , the worldwide brand leader in desktop computers, ranks only fourth in laptop computer sales and has captured only nineteen per cent of the European market. The Grown Corporation has succeeded in penetrating the difficult European market and now has a twenty-one per cent market share; in worldwide sales, however, Crown ranks second in laptop models (33) fourth in desktops.
Beginner's luck
A recent arrival (34) the scene, Unitec, has won a twenty-eight per cent slice of the European market and already stands at number five in the world market in (35) categories. The computer division of Marcus Industries ranks just below A. B. I. in the desktop best five and currently leads the world market in portable models; in spite of this, Marcus have captured only six per cent of the European sector.
Europe fights back
The remainder (36) the European market is shared by a number of local manufacturers who are competing well in home markets (37) who do not figure largely on the international scene. The (38) one of these European companies to challenge the U. S. and Japanese makers abroad successfully is Contact Electronics who entered the top five in the laptop field this year and managed (39) outsell both A. B.I. and Unitec. Unitec's main rival, PerryHamilton, still occupies third place in the desktop category, (40) is struggling to maintain its market share.

The new law poses a few challenges to manufacturers who are now rushing to set up collection networks and perfecting techniques to disassemble and recycle older products. With an eye toward the future, they are also integrating easily recycled materials into new products. Plastics, a major component of most electronicproducts, pose a particular obstacle because their quality becomes worse and worse with age, losing strengthand flexibility even if reprocessed.NEC Corp. overcomes this problem by creating a plastics sandwich, in which the filling is 100 percent recycled plastic and the outer layers a mixture of 14 percent recycled material. The resulting plastic has sufficient strength and toughness for use as a case for desktop PCs. The company, in cooperation with plastic maker Sumitomo Dow, has also developed a new plastic, which engineers claim retains its mechanical properties through repeated recycling. NEC uses the plastic, which is also flame-retardant (阻燃的) in battery cases for notebook PCs.
Meanwhile, Matsushita Electric, maker of the Panasonic brand, is avoiding plastic in favor of magnesium (镁). Magnesium, says the company, is ideal for re cycling because it retains its original strength throughrepeated reprocessing. Matsushita has developed molding techniques to form. magnesium into the case for a 21-inch TV. Unfortunately, the magnesium case and energy-saving features make the TV about twice as expensive as an ordinary model. The company hopes, however, that increased use of magnesium will eventually bring prices down.
Choose correct answers to the question:
According to the present regulations of Japan, the recycling of paper and plastic will be the responsibility of______.
A.the government
B.the manufacturers
C.the consumers
D.the sellers

It provides an effective way for sellers to inform. buyers about products. Advertising thus helps manufacturers sell their products and benefits consumers by providing them with shopping information.
Advertising also helps the economy grow by stimulating demand for new products. Manufacturers spend much money to develop new products. Through advertising, they can speed up the process of creating a market for a product and so recover their costs more quickly. Fewer new products would be developed if manufacturers could not use advertising to help sell the products.
Advertisers include the expense of advertising in the sales price of a product. In some cases, advertising raises the price of a product. In other cases, advertising helps lower prices by creating the mass demand that supports mass production. Successful advertising makes many people want a product. By mass producing a product and developing a large volume of sales, the manufacturer can charge less per unit.
Sociologically, advertising supports the mass communication media. It pays all the costs of commercial television and radio. It provides viewers with free entertainment and news programs, though viewers are often annoyed by commercial interruptions. Advertising also pays three- fourths of the costs of newspapers and magazines. Without advertising, readers would have to pay a higher price for newspapers and magazines, and many of the publications would go out of business.
Because the mass media depend on advertising to stay in business, many people question whether advertisers control the media. Generally, media do no allow advertisers to influence their programming or editorial content. However, many broadcasters and publishers do not hesitate to run favorable information about their advertisers, and they sometimes refuse to run unfavorable information. Critics of commercial television maintain that dependence on advertising lowers the quality of TV programming . In order to sell advertising time at high prices, TV stations try do attract the largest possible audience. Critics argue that the stations therefore broadcast too many general entertainment programs and not enough informational and cultural programs.
Many critics also charge that advertising persuades people to buy products they do not need or want through the use of psychological techniques. Advertisers reply that they do not have the means to make people buy unwanted products. They argue that adults freely choose what to buy or what not to buy. Most experts agree, however, that that advertising is particularly persuasive to young children, who do not have the ability or experience to judge advertising critically. For this reason, the Federal Trade Commission has strict regulations governing advertising aimed at children.
Advertising is useful to the economy in the sense that.
A.it helps to inform. consumers about new products.
B.it gives the designers a chance to make money .
C.it helps to create a market for new products.
D.it gives the producers an excuse to raise prices.

听力原文: The competition among producers of personal computers is essentially a race to get the best, most innovative products to the marketplace. Marketers in this environment frequently have to make a judgment as to their competitors' role when making marketing strategy decisions. If major competitors are changing their products, then a marketer may want to follow suit to remain competitive. Apple Computer, Inc. has introduced two new, faster personal computers, the Mackintosh II and Mackintosh SE, in anticipation of the introduction of a new PC by IBM, one of Apple's major competitors.
Apple's new computers are much faster and more powerful than its earlier models. The improved Mackintosh is able to run programs that previously were impossible to run on an Apple PC, including IBM compatible(兼容的) programs. This compatibility feature illustrates computer manufacturers' new attitude of giving customers the features they want. Making Apple computers capable of running IBM software is Apple's effort at making the Mackintosh compatible with IBM computers and thus more popular in the office, where Apple hopes to increase sales. Users of the new Apple can also add accessories(附件) to make their machines specialize in specific uses, such as engineering and writing.
The new computers represent a big improvement over past models, but they also cost much more. Company officials do not think the higher price will slow down buyers who want to step up to a more powerful computer. Apple wants to stay in the high price end of the personal computer market to finance research for even faster, more sophisticated computers.
Even though Apple and IBM are major competitors, both companies realize that their competitor's computers have certain features that their own models do not. The Apple line has always been popular for its sophisticated color graphics(图形), whereas the IBM machines have always been favored in offices. In the future, there will probably be more compatibility between the two companies' products, which no doubt will require that both Apple and IBM change marketing strategies.
(33)
A.Because IBM is changing its computer models continuously.
B.Because it wants to make its machines specialize in specific uses.
C.Because it wants to stay ahead of IBM in the competitive computer market.
D.Because it expects its major competitor IBM to follow its example.

M: Of course not. I'm just going over to the recycling center this afternoon. Sometimes volunteers come by these apartments and collect waste paper. Sometimes I take the old bottles and papers there myself.
W: How do people deal with these old things?
M: Manufacturers use waste paper for things like paper bags, towels, napkins and boxes.
W: My god! Am I wiping my mouth on the towels from the dustbin?
M: You can't say so. Used material must be treated carefully and scientifically before reusing. For instance, an old newspaper can be recycled by de-inking and pulping.
W: Does the recycled paper look the same as the paper made from virgin wood pulp?
M: Well, inevitably, owing to its dingy color, art books and high quality magazine paper wouldn't use recycled paper. However, I suppose it's suitable for things like greeting cards, calendars and writing paper. After all, who cares about the drab color if waste paper can help to preserve forests?
W: Yes, forests may be one of the most valuable natural resources in the world. Regretfully, some people in my country haven't realized the importance of the environment protection.
M: In America, a few years ago people were really enthusiastic about reusing waste paper. But with the decreasing demand recently, interest has been waning. I think the government should do something to make people resume their enthusiasm in recycled paper.
W: Absolutely right. In addition, manufacturers need to find new commercial uses for recycled paper. Perhaps we can read comic books made from it just like in Japan.
Questions:
11. Where is the man going this afternoon?
12.What product is NOT made from recycled paper, according to the conversation?
13.What major benefit can we get from recycling waste paper?
14.According to the man, what is the disadvantage of recycled paper?
15.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
(31)
A.To the recycling center.
B.On a bicycle trip.
C.To the newspaper stand.
D.To a shopping center.
