听力原文:M: Hello. This is Greg Rice reporting live in Barrow, Alaska.

W: Hello, Greg. Is everything going smoothly?

M: Yes. I've just arrived here in Barrow, Alaska, to bring you live coverage of what appears to be the results of a huge meteorite impact, perhaps the largest in recent history, that occurred just twelve hours ago. The exact location of the impact is unknown, but estimates put it about 20 kilometers south of Barrow based on shock waves felt throughout the region.

W: Are there any witnesses?

M: Yeah. Some witnesses say they saw a bright light streaking through the sky, accompanied by a roaring boom, moments before the impact. It's unknown whether there are any casualties, but it is unlikely considering this sparsely populated area.

W: It's said that such impacts were commonplace during the formation of our solar system, and many believe that a meteorite 10 kilometers in diameter which crashed into Earth 65 million years ago led to the mass extinction of many animal species including the dinosaurs.

M: You're right. But it is often difficult to calculate the number of such large impacts on Earth because erosion and vegetation make it difficult to spot them. In recent years, astronomers have focused more of their attention on the paths of many uncharted space rocks or asteroids floating out there in the hope that we might be able to determine the threat they pose on mankind...This is Greg Rice reporting from Alaska.

W: Thanks, Greg...We'll keep you up-to-date on any development there.

(23)

A.An alien spacecraft landing.

B.The impact of a meteorite.

C.A volcanic eruption.

D.The blizzard conditions in Alaska.

听力原文:M: Oh, it is terrible! Aboard Aerolineas Argentinas flight 386, 368 passengers we
re given pre-prepared food on their way from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles.

W: Then what happened?

M: A few days after arriving in Los Angeles, one passenger died, and 74 others were seriously ill.

W: And what is the reason for that?

M: According to Dr. Phillips, it was the highest single outbreak of cholera in the United States this century, and the airline passengers were the victims of this new epidemic of cholera, a disease not seen in Latin America since 1895. They were just a few of the more than one million people affected in 20 countries, including at least 10,000 who died in the following three years after 1991.

W: Cholera? To the best of my understanding, that disease has been dead for some time now.

M: But it has come back. Dr. Phillips says that cholera is by no means the only old infection on the comeback, and it is one of the major infections that are fighting back fiercely against man's attempts to control them.

W: But what are the reasons for the comeback of so many dead diseases?

M: Phillips says a single reason can't explain why a new disease appears or an old one returns, and usually a combination of factors are involved.

W: What kind of specific factors?

M: Dr. Phillips in his book Plagues on Our Doorstep presents some reasons.

W: What are they?

M: First, international travel and commerce. The cholera aboard flight 386 and mosquitoes living in imported tires are examples of these. Second, technology and industry. For example, the technology in Britain's processing industry was a likely contributor to the emergence of mad cow disease. Third, the breakdown of public health measures. Declining health resources have resulted in the erosion of once highly-valued health services.

W: Well, that's just unbelievable!

(26)

A.A flight to Los Angeles.

B.A book written by a doctor.

C.A disease on the comeback and its reasons.

D.Man's effort to control disease.

听力原文:W: Dr. Smith. I need to ask you about something in Chapter 12. Well, it talks abo
ut erosion and the de posit of sediment(solid matter that settles at the bottom of a liquid)on the deep sea floor, but I'm confused. For that to happen, there would have to be some kind of force down there moving the mud or sand or whatever, right? But I thought there weren't any waves or currents that deep in the ocean.

M: That's not exactly correct. It's true that deep down on the ocean floor we won't have the same kinds of currents we find in shallower parts. But we do find what we call turbidity currents. This wasn't in the book but the term came up in class. Do you remember what it means?

W: Umh, turbidity currents? Oh, yeah! Isn't that when sediment like sand or mud gets stirred up and mixes with water. And then this mixture flows through the water around it, right?

M: Good !

W: Uhe, but I thought that only happened in rivers.

M: Well, yes. This does occur in rivers, but we see turbidity currents deep in the ocean as well.

W: But how do they get started there?

M: Earthquakes mostly, when an earthquake occurs under water, it throws up tremendous amounts of mud or sand that becomes suspended in a layer of water near the bottom of the ocean. This layer is so much denser and heavier than other ocean water that if flows right down the slopes of the ocean floor and gains more and more speed as it moves along. Then it's just like the winds blowing across the desert picking up sand from one place and moving it along and finally dropping it somewhere else.

(23)

A.The strength of ocean currents.

B.The movement of sediment deep in the ocean.

C.A new way of measuring the depth of the ocean.

D.The best methods for studying deep ocean processes.
