The Game of the Name Here comes John Smith walking toward me. Even though he is but a pass

The Game of the Name

Here comes John Smith walking toward me. Even though he is but a passing acquaintance, the American greeting ritual demands that I utter a few words to reassure him of my good will. But what form. of ad- dress should I use? John? Smith? Dr. Smith? A decision such as this is usually made unconsciously.

As native speakers in the American speech community, we have grown up learning the rules of address at the same time that we were acquiring the grammatical rules of American - English. At first thought, it might seem a trivial pursuit to examine the ways in which we address one another. But forms of address re- veal many assumptions we make about memebers of our speech community.

Our initial decision about the appropriate address form. is based on relative ages. If the person being ad- dressed is a child, then almost all the rules that we have unconsciously assimilated can safely be ignored, and we use the simple formula First Name. The child, in turn, addresses an adult by using the formula Tihe plus Last Name.

But defining a "child" is not always easy. I address my son's roommate at college by FN, even though he is an adult under the law. I, too, have the relative age of a child to a 75 - year - old acquaintance who calls me Pete. Let us assume that John Smith' is not a child who can be addressed by FN but is either my contemporary or my elder. The next important determiner for the form. of address will then be the speech situation.

If the situation is a formal one, then I must disregard all other rules and use social Identity plus Last Name. John Smith will always be addressed as Dr. Smith (or sometimes simply as Doctor, with Last Name understood) in the medical setting of office or hospital. (I am allowed to call him if my status is at least as high as his or if we are friends outside of our social roles, but the rest of my utterance must remain respectful.)

We are also obliged to address certain other people by their social identity in formal situation: public officials (Congressman: Your Honor), educators (Professor or Doctor), leaders of meetings (Mr. Chairman ), Roman Catholic priests (Father Daily) and nuns (Sister Anna), and so forth. By the way, note the sexist distinction in the formulas for priests and nuns. The formula for a priest is Father plus Last Name, but for a nun it is Sister plus Religious Name (usually an FN).

Most conversations, however, are not carried on in formal speech situations, and so the basic decision is when to use FN to TLN. A social acquaintance or newly hired colleague of approximately the same age and rank is usually introduced on an FN basis. "Pete, I'd like you to meet Harvy. "Now a problem arises if both age and rank of cone of the parties are higher: "Pete, I'd like you to meet Attorney Brown."

Attorney Brown may, of course, at any time signal me that he is willing to suspend the rules of address and allow an FN basis. Such a suspension is his privilege to bestow, and it is usually handled humorously, with a remark like, “I answer quicker to Bruce.”

Complications arise when relative age and relative rank are not both the same. A young doctor who joins a hospital finds it difficult to address a much older doctor. They are equal in rank (and therefore FN should be used) but the great disparity in ages calls for TLN. In such cases, the young doctor can use the No - Name (NN) formula, phrasing his utterances adroitly to avoid using any term of address at all.

English is quite exceptional among the world's languages in this respect. Most European languages oblige the speaker to choose between the familiar and formal second person singular (as in the French tu and vous), as English once did when “thou” was in use.

This is the basic American system, but the rules vary according to speech situations, subtle friendship or kin relationships between the speakers, regions of

e to listen to conversations that I can hear in public. It is amazing how different the style, or the tone or the content of different conversations can be and to listen to the differences in the language that people use when they speak to different people.

If you're ever in a bookstore or department store, it's interesting to hear how the same salesperson talks to different people. There're other interesting places to listen to conversations too. I think, and one place that I've found is on bus trips. People often talk to each other as if no one else were there. I guess they think people can't hear their conversations.

Recently I was on a bus, and I was listening to a conversation of two people behind me. I can't really say I was listening. I guess it would have been hard not to hear it. it was amusing to listen to the two people, though, because they were playing a kind of language, uh, word game about states and state capitals. One person would say the name of the state, and the other person would say the name of the capital.

It sounds like a kind of simple game that doesn't involve much language, and you wouldn't think that it would involve very much conversation, but actually this wasn't the case because they were playing this game. They continued to compliment one another and talk about how much they knew about history and how many of the other things that they could or couldn't remember about those places from their trips or from their reading. It was really kind of fun to listen to them.

A.Criticizing others on bus.

B.Amusing people in pubic.

C.Enjoying talking to people.

The Name Game

Each year, business executives around the world struggle to find original and catchy names for their companies and their companies' products, According to business experts, these decisions are among the most important decisions that firms ever make. A name is the first point of contact that a company has with the world, and it can be an effective marketing tool. And respected names have value. When a company is sold, there is often a fee for transferring the company name to the new owners. The rights to the names Indian Motorcycles and Pan Am Airlines were sold years after those companies went bankrupt. Names are so important that some companies hire special naming firms that develop a list of names, test them at focus groups, screen them to be sure they are available, and then trademark the final selections. But how do firms decide on names?

Ways of playing the name game

Some companies cheese straightforward names. These may include the name or names of the founders (Proctor & Gamble, Hewlett Packard), the place where they first did business (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Mutual of New York), or their primary products (General Electric, General Motors). To make a straightforward name memorable, though, is a challenge.

Some companies are mainly identified by initials. International Business Machines is almost universally called IBM, American Telephone and Telegraph has become AT&T, and Kentucky Fried Chicken has consciously chosen to be known as KFC. In some cases, though, it is not exactly clear what the initials stand for. The computer company NBI's initials stand for "Nothing But Initials." Or take the case of IKEA, the Swedish design firm: The initials IK come from the name of the founder, Ingvar Komrat. The E comes from the name of his family farm, Elmtaryd, and the A comes from the nearby town of Agunnaryd. Some firms create names by a process called "morpheme (词素)construction," first shortening and then fusing parts of the company's full names. For example, United Information Systems is generally referred to as Unisys and Federal Express as FedEx. FedEx saved money with its new name too: the shorter name cost $1,000 less to paint on each of the company's 10,000 trucks. Some companies use unusual spellings of common names: Cingular for Singular, Citibank for City Bank, and Sunkist for Sun Kissed.

Some companies choose names that are inspired by other company names. According to the founder of the Carnation evaporated-milk company, the name for his product was suggested, strangely enough, by a brand of cigars known as Carnations. Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computers, was a Beatles fan, and he named his company after Apple Records, the label founded by the Beatles. This "borrowing" is perfectly legal as long as the two companies are not in the same line of business. (Reportedly, Steve Jobs had to sign an agreement not to produce records.) However, in some cases, company lawyers have said that use of their name, or even part of their name, results in "dilution" of the strength of that name, and they have sued other companies to prevent this. Toys-R-Us, for example, has tried to protect the "R-Us" portion of their name even when it has been applied to completely different products, such as cheese or flowers or guns, and McDonald's has tried to prevent companies from using the "Mc" prefix that has been used for many of their products.

Some firms have chosen names that have nothing to do with their business. Apple is not in the fruit business; it makes computers. Red pepper does not sell spices; it sells software. Domino's has nothing to do with games; it makes pizza. A number of companies have chosen off-the-wall or playful names for their products. There are those naming experts who warn against this, saying that consumers will not take these seriously, and in the case of Boo. com, they may have been fight:

A.Y

B.N

C.NG

A team of about 35 employees had come together for a team-building event. They were a young, bright and enthusiastic team. However, one of their chief problems was the fact that they wouldn't share information or solutions with each other, and the team leader thought they were too focused on themselves and not on the team. As a result, she brought them all into the cafeteria. All of the tables and chairs had been stored away, and fun decorations and hundreds of different colored balloons had been placed around the room. In the center of the room was a big box of balloons that hadn't been blown up yet. The team leader instructed everybody to pick a balloon, blow it up, and write their name on it, but they had to be careful not to burst the balloon. Although they were given a second chance if their first balloon popped, they were out of the game the second time round. In the end, about 30 team members wrote their names without their balloons popping. They were then asked to leave the room and, after five minutes, the team leader brought them back in and asked them to find the balloon with their name on it amongst the hundreds of other balloons in the room. After 15 minutes of searching, no one had found their balloon, and the team were told that they were then going to move on to the third round of the activity. In this round, each team member was instructed to find any balloon with a name on it and then give that balloon to the person whose name was on it. Within two minutes, everybody had their own balloon. The team leader summarized the activity thus: “We are much more efficient when we are willing to share with each other and much better at problem solving when we are working together, not individually”. Sometimes, members of teams create obstacles by focusing solely on their own pursuits and goals. Every member of the team should ask themselves on a regular basis what they are doing and what they can do for the team.

About how many team members were out of the second round of the activity?

A.30.

B.35.

C.5.

听力原文: Voice One: A bottlenose dolphin named Maui plays a computer game, helping scientists create a unique language [that] they hope humans and dolphins will understand.

It's not based on human words, but on a specific dolphin sound. Guess which one. Not its bark, or its clicks, made famous by Flipper. Words in this new language are whistled.

Dolphins typically whistle to each other under water, through a special structure just beneath their blowhole. Researchers say their whistles have meaning. For example, each dolphin learns from its mom its own signature whistle. So in human terms when they greet each other, it's not just, "Hi" It's, "Hi, my name is ..."--in this case, Maui.

Ken Marten and his team at Earthtrust in Sea Life Park Research Lab in Hawaii want to better understand how dolphins communicate. So for the next ten years, they will literally whistle while they work, creating this special language.

Voice Two: The rest of my career is dedicated to talking to these guys, so I guess you could call me Doctor Dolittle now.

Voice One: After studying dolphin whistles, Marten invented distinct whistles for various objects with which dolphins are familiar.

Which sound can be thought as dolphin's words?

A.Its bark.

B.Its clicks.

C.Its whistle.

D.Its crying.

Help Your Child Become a Reader

Encouraging early reading skills can build a path to a lifelong (终身的) love of reading and can help your child get a head start in school. While reading to your child is still the most important thing you can do to build reading skills, there are many techniques that can help.

Make reading fun. Play games with your child as you read. Many traditional children’s games can be adapted to encourage reading skills.

While reading or during play, tell your child, “I spy with my little eye, something that begins with the letter b.” Help the child find something on the page or in the room that begins with that letter. For example. “I see a barn.” This can also be used to teach beginning letter sounds. “I spy with my little eye, something that begins with the sound‘s’.” Help the child find a word that begins with the “s” sound.

In this variation on the popular game, instruct the child that, “Simon says, ‘point to something that starts with the letter n.’” The child can then find an object in the room or a body part, such as the nose, that starts with the letter presented. This can also be used to teach beginning sounds.

Make a game out of rhyming (押韵) words by making up silly words to rhyme with the child’s name of favorite toys. This sets the stage for rhyming real words by showing the child the similarities of sounds. As the child masters making up the words, begin rhyming real words to one another.

Tips to raise a successful reader:

Put books in places where the child plays. If books are easily accessible, children are more likely to pick them up.

Let children “read to you” by looking at pictures. Making up stories to go along with illustrations helps children discover how words relate to pictures.

Take books along on trips or even short visits to the doctor’s office or grocery store.

Have children help you shop. Reading grocery lists and looking for specific items helps build sight vocabulary.

A good reading habit can help your child do well at school.

A.Right

B.Wrong

C.Not mentioned
