第5题

The industrial societies have been extremely productive during the last two centuries. The
economic advance has been remarkable. During this relatively short period of time, greater changes in people's living conditions have occurred than in the thousands of years which preceded.

During the past 200 years the world population has increased 6 times, the annual world output has increased 80 times, and the distance a person can travel has gone up 1,000 times. There has also been much recent progress in art, culture, learning, and science. Such changes have led to a high rate of production and growth of the economy.

Economists fear that within the next 100 to 150 years, the earth's resources will become very scarce. Their fears are partly justified, but we should not be afraid. Industrial civilization adapts to new knowledge. By advancing knowledge, we not only create new forms of resources, but we also find ways to economize their use. Advanced modern knowledge can feed the hungry people of the world and improve their standard of living.

The figures in the second paragraph are used for the following purposes EXCEPT______.

A.prediction.

B.contrast.

C.definition.

D.explanation.

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney announced the founding of the Whitney Museum of American Art i
n January 1930, but her support of artists from the early 1900s until her death in 1942, her abiding concern to aid living artists from the United States had begun more than twenty years earlier. As a sculptor in the academic tradition, she realized that there were few opportunities for independent artists to exhibit or sell their works, especially those from the United States. She remained the greatest patron of art of the twentieth century.

As early as 1907, Whitney organized an exhibition of contemporary art in the United States for the Colony Club, a women's club in New York City of which she was a founding member. The following year she purchased four of the seven paintings sold from the landmark exhibition of "The Eight" at the Macbeth Galleries. She contributed funds to the Armory Show of 1913, and for many years paid her deficit of the society of Independent Artists, founded in 1917.

In 1914, Whitney converted a townhouse into a small gallery known as the Whitney Studio, which featured regular exhibitions of the work of artists from the United States. In 1918, she established the Whitney Studio Club: any artist introduced by a member could join the club, where annual exhibitions gave members a rare opportunity to present their works to the public without first submitting them to a jury.

She aided artists in numerous other ways--sending them abroad to study, paying their hospital bills and studio rents, and most important, purchasing their works.

By 1929, Whitney owned more than five hundred works by artists from the United States, and she felt the public should have an opportunity to see the collection. That year she offered the collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, whose director refused her offer before she even had a chance to express her intention to build and endow a Whitney wing. This abrupt rejection only served to challenge Whitney, who announced in January 1930 that she would establish her own museum with a new and dramatically different mandate--to support artists from the United States.

What is the main topic of the passage?

A.Art movements in the twentieth century.

B.The hardship of twentieth-century artists in the United States.

C.The commitment of Whitney to artists from the United States.

D.The art collections at two different museums.

Are you the kind of person who likes staying in unusual places? If the answer is "yes", th
en try the world's coldest hotel in Jukkasjarvi in the north of Sweden. But go in winter or all you'll find is a pool of water, because the hotel melts every spring!

The man who runs the Attic Hall Hotel is Nils Yngve Bergqvist. He built his first ice building for an art exhibition in 1991 and he designed the present hotel—over 200 meters square—himself. It took workmen about two months to pile 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base. As the weather got colder, the snow froze and then they removed the base. The whole building and everything in it are made of snow—except for the wooden front door. There's a theatre which Nils uses for a jazz club, a radio station and a large ice bar. As you can imagine, hot drinks are popular with the guests! The rooms have no doors; there's no furniture, no heating and everyone sleeps on ice beds. But the 800 people who stayed at the hotel this winter seemed to like it. If you want to stay in one of the ten ice rooms, it will cost you about £30 a night. You will receive a survival certificate from the manager.

When the winter's over, Nils holds his annual contest to predict the day that the hotel will fall. The person that guessed the day correctly last year receives a large painting from an ARTic Hall exhibition. Nils's ice hotel is becoming world-famous and he loves his work.. He's already excited about his next project — an ice hotel that will have more complicated architectural features and, he says, will be bigger and better.

What do we know about the Artic Hall Hotel?

A.It is completely made of snow.

B.It is designed by Nils's friend.

C.It is built once a year.

D.It has a wooden base.
