erywhere are encouraged by their parents to express easily and often.

Every religion has a special way to say" thank you" to God. In the Jewish faith, these" thank you" often take the form. of formal blessings, or" brachot."

In addition to" thank you blessings" for food and health, there are also brachot to be recited upon seeing a rainbow, a wise person, a beautiful woman, a long-lost friend or a king. There is even a long blessing one says after using the toilet, which gives thanks for the smooth functioning of the human body.

Michael Strassfeld is the rabbi of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism in New York and the author of recently a book of Life: Embracing Judaism as A Spiritual Practice.

Voice: Being Grateful I think makes us aware or reminds us of the blessings of our lives. It reflects a sense of how important it is to go through life and go through every day really appreciating the miracles of every day. And I don' t think it' s about making the sun stand still as it were or dividing the Red Sea, but really just the everyday aspects of life, for nature and beauty and relationships. All those things we enjoy every day, but often we forget about.

Host: Rabbi Strassfeld says that traditional Jews also thank God at painful moments. When one hears of a death, for example, one blesses God as" the true Judge".

Voice: And it' s a way of expressing an acknowledgment that death is also part of life. It doesn't mean that death is a blessing or that that person is better off, but it just really understands that everything in life is part of life, and that everything from a traditional viewpoint is created by God. So all of life is part of that. Blessing and gratitude allows you to emphasize or to focus more on the good things and to put the difficult things in the broader perspective.

Rabbi Michael Strassfeld says that one should be grateful ______.

A.when everything goes smoothly

B.when the sun stands still

C.for people' s appreciation

D.for everyday aspects of life

听力原文: Hosting a successful party can give you a glow that will linger for days. It is easy to be a successful host: a few simple precautions, a little imagination, and careful attention to details are the whole of the recipe. If you follow that recipe, the party will be fun for everyone.

The first step for a successful evening is to get a well-chosen guest list. Keeping the same chairs with the same guests party after party, however engaging and stimulating they may be individually, is as unimaginative and boring as to serve the same main course at every meal. If you change your guest list and bring in unfamiliar faces, you will offer your guests the possibility of discovery.

The second step is to introduce your guests around as soon as they arrive. You must have the basic guidelines fixed in your mind: the man is introduced to the woman if she is over eighteen; the younger person is introduced to the older if both are of the same sex; girls under eighteen are introduced to older people; either men or women are always introduced to a considerably older person, and often to a person of special distinction. Newcomers should be introduced all the way around. When you have to leave a new guest with a group he has just met, tell them enough about each other so that the conversation will start easily.

The way you seat your guests could perfect or spoil your party. Work this out carefully well in advance. Prepare notes on each guest's interests, personality, communicational abilities. As a host, your responsibilities are not unlike those of the chairman of a panel discussion. You must pace the talk, spark it; see that all sides have a chance to get into the act. This is host mastery.

(33)

A.A sparkling party.

B.Host mastery.

C.A successful host.

D.Rules to remember.

听力原文: The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport in the world. Every four years, a hundred or more countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honors in sport. More than 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honor, too, for all who compete, win or lose. That is the spirit of the Olympics: to take part in is what matters.

The Olympic Games always start in a bright color and action. The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track. The custom is for the Greek team to march in first. For it was in Greece that the Olympics began. The team of the country where the Games are being held, i. e. the host country, marches in last.

The runner with the Olympic torch then enters the stadium and lights the flame. A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.

The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The rule is that there must be at least fifteen. The main events are in track and field, but there are a few days before these sports start. Everyday the competitors take part in a different sport: riding, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running. Points are gained for each event. Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.

More and more women are participating in the games. They first competed in 1900 ,in tennis and golf, which are no longer held in the Olympics. Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912. But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women. Now, they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse tiding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as the men.

What is the basic honor in taking part in the Olympic Games?

A.To win medals.

B.To break world record.

C.To win first places.

D.To take pan in the Games.

听力原文: Strikes are very common in Britain. They are extremely harmful to its industries. In fact there are other countries in Western Europe that lose more working days through strikes every year than Britain. The trouble with the strikes in Britain is that they occur in essential industries. There are over four hundred and ninetyfive unions in Britain. Some unions are very small. Over twenty have more than one hundred thousand members. Unions do not exist only to demand high wages. They also educate their members. They provide benefits for the sick and try to improve working conditions. Trade unionists say that we must thank the unions for the great improvement in working conditions in the last hundred years. It is now against the law fur union members to go on strike without the support of their union. This kind of strike la called the unofficial strike and was common until recently. Employers felt that unofficial strikes were most harmful because they could not be predicted. However, these unofficial strikes still occur from time to time and some unions have also refused to cooperate with the law. As a result, the general picture of the relations between workers and employers in Britain has gone from bad to worse.

(23)

A.They often take place in the major industries.

B.British trade unions are more powerful.

C.There are more trade union members in Britain.

D.Britain loses more working days through strikes every year.

听力原文:Welcome to The Daily Money Minute. I'm your host Benson Hollinger, and today we'r
e talking about time management. Companies strive to do things more efficiently and quickly each and every day. First, set hourly goals during your working day. Do not allow yourself to waste time through idle chatting or being distracted by others. Secondly, be reasonable in plotting your work schedule. Planning to do 20 things in one day when perhaps only 10 things can be fully accomplished leaves employees feeling helpless and depressed. Also, rushing to finish those 20 tasks could often result in errors that could cost the company money and time. Remember, it is always a good idea to set goals throughout the day. Reaching those goals will result in a feeling of satisfaction and self-confidence after a productive work day. For The Daily Money Minute, I'm Benson Hollinger.

What does the speaker say is the first thing to do?

A.Try to complete at least 20 tasks each day.

B.Set hourly goals during the working day.

C.Talk to other employees about goals.

D.Avoid becoming depressed and sad.

听力原文: The twenty-third Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles and, like every other Olympic Games, they represented a contest of mind, muscle, and athletic determination. The use of high technology, however, showed increasing significance in the staging of the event and helped set an example for staging future events.

Unlike the Olympics of the past, the Olympics are not just a race for gold anymore. They have also become a race for computer technology. Playing the massive event, as any host can tell you, requires a technology plan and organization that brings hundreds of countries together. In the twenty-third Games, for example, computers were used to keep track of schedules, accounts, transportation, and ticketing for more than 43,000 Olympic employees and volunteers. This was not an easy task.

A sophisticated electronic message system, moreover, helped keep the 12,000 or so journalists up-to-date on results. Due to this system, they were able to know about and broadcast to the world the judges' final decisions usually within a minute's time. This message system also allowed traffic controllers to convey traffic reports more efficiently, so that the usually confused Los Angeles highways became easy to navigate. Computers and other high-tech tools were also used to train American athletes by analyzing and evaluating performances. This- computer marvelously assisted the athletes in identifying weaknesses and suggesting ways to improve.

(30)

A.The use of high technology.

B.Being held in a big city in the U. $. A..

C.Earning a lot of money by advertising the goods.

D.Training all the athletes who were to participate in the game by using computers.
