Many, many centuries ago, large distances were measured in the Babylonian mile. The Babylonian mile equaled about seven of our miles. Because of its length, the time needed to travel the Babylonian mile became a measure of time. One day was said to be twelve Baby-Ionian time-miles.
About one thousand years before Christ, the Babylonians began keeping records of star movements. They needed a way to record how much time passed between the moment they first saw a star and then observed it again. They used the Babylonian time-mile as their measure of time.
In order to have small units of time, the Babylonians divided their time-mile into thirty parts. The Babylonians believed that each trip around the sky was a circle. One complete trip around the sky, they reasoned, took one day.
You already know that one day was the same as twelve Babylonian time-mile. Since each time-mile was divided into thirty parts, the circular trip around the sky was 12×30, or 360 parts long. That is how there came to be 360 4egrees in a circle.
The purpose of this passage is to explain ______.
A.how the Babylonians measured the time of star movements
B.why the circle is divided into 360 degrees
C.the Babylonian mile and the Babylonian time-mile
D.the Babylonians' ideas about the sky

听力原文:M: Hey! How was your trip?
W: Wonderful! I spent most of my time at the art museum. I especially like the new wing. I was amazed to hear the guide explain the problems they had in building it.
M: Right. I just read an article that went on and on about the cost. 90 million total I think.
W: Yeah. The guide mentioned that. You could see they spared no expense.
M: Hm. It looked really unusal, at least from what I saw in the picture.
W: It is. The basic design is two triangles. In fact there are triangles all over. The paving stones in the courtyard, the skylights and even a lot of the sculptures. One sculpture is mobile. It's in the courtyard and it's made of pieces of aluminum that moves slowly in the air. It's really impressive.
M: That was in the article too. It said that the original was steel and it weighted so much that it wasn't safe to hand.
W: Right. They did it over in aluminum so it wouldn't come crashing down on someone's head.
M: You know the article went into that in detail. There was even an interview with the sculptor.
W: I'd like to read that. Would you mind if I borrow the magazine sometime?
M: No. I wouldn't mind of I haven't thrown it ont yet.
(20)
A.She was impressed by it.
B.It was a waste of money.
C.She was amazed it had opened so soon.
D.She didn't like it as much as the other wings.

W: A water purifier. You want to carry even more equipment with you on our hiking trip?
M: If it's light weight and saves work, yes. And this one fits that description.
W: Really. I bet it takes up a lot of room.
M: Not at all. It's straw, much like the ones you use or drink a soda or milk shake.
W: Really, that is small.
M: Yea, it's plastic, and has a series of mineral and chemical filters that strain harmful germs from water.
W: Yes, but how good a job can it do filtering the germs out of motionless pond water, or water from lakes and streams.
M: It's fantastic. It makes the water entirely germ free.
W: But what about salt or chemical pollutants that might be in the water? Does it clean those out?
M: No, it does not remove salt and chemicals, but those are really not major concerns when we are out hiking and camping.
W: Hmm, how long will a straw last?
M: For about one hundred gallons but don't worry about measuring that large amount of water. There is a built-in safety feature.
W: I think I'll get one for my camping trip this weekend, It'll sure be carrying a lot of water or having to boil it at the camp site.
(20)
A.In restaurant.
B.On car tripe.
C.In science laboratory.
D.On camping trips.

Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. These signs include the thousand and one ways in which we orient ourselves to the situation of daily life: when to shake hands and what to say when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to make purchases, when to accept and refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, or customs, are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend for our space of mind and our efficiency on hundreds of these signs, most of which we do not carry on the level of conscious awareness.
Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar signs are removed. No matter how broadminded or full of good will you may be. a series of supports have been removed from you, followed by a feeling of frustration in much the same way. First they reject the environment which causes discomfort. "The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad. "When foreigners in a strange land get together to complain about the host country and its people, you can be sure that they are suffering from culture shock.
Another phrase of culture shock is regression. The home environment suddenly assumes a tremendous importance. To the foreigner, everything becomes unreasonably glorified. All the difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered. It usually takes a trip home to bring one back to reality.
Culture shock is called an occupational disease mainly because ______.
A.like all other diseases it has its own signs and cure
B.only those who engage in culture work suffer from it
C.it is hard to get rid of
D.only those living in a strange culture may experience it

听力原文:M: Here we are. Brochures for one day excursions.
W: Mm. A riverboat trip. That looks interesting.
M: Yeah. It does. Where does it go? And how do we get to the river?
W: It says to go by bus to the river. That costs $ 5 per person each way. Then the boat gees along the river for 4 hours. And we can get a meal on the boat.
M: How much does it cost altogether?
W: Well, the boat trip costs $ 20 and the meal is extra if we want it. I suppose it's a hit expensive -- $ 30 each altogether, and that's not counting the food and drinks.
M: Yes. It would be relaxing but it is a bit expensive.
W: You're right. What about horse riding or cycling? Can you ride a horse?
M: Not very well. I've only ridden a horse twice in my life. How much does it cost?
W: Let me see. Horse riding is a bit expensive too -- $ 30 for 2 hours. And we'd have to go there by bus. And that would be an extra cost.
M: Er, what about cycling? That shouldn't be tm expensive. Here we are, err, mountain bikes for hire. $ 30 a day. But $ 20 of that is a deposit and you can get it back when you return the bike. I wonder how far away the cycle hire place is.
W: No. It's not far at all. I'll show you...
M: That's terrific. Cycling looks the best, doesn't it? That should give us enough exercise. And we can take our own lunch and have a picnic. Now all we have to do is to decide which direction to cycle in.
W: Great. Let's go. We can talk about that while we're walking to the hire place.
