A Desert Between Paul and Clara

Paul had long promised to marry Clara. But at thirty-three he met and married Alice. Clara was driven mad.

Paul was taken to court. The judge ordered him to pay Clara $600 because of the broken promise. Paul had to borrow the money from a moneylender. He agreed to pay back $5 a month--for twenty years. His wages at the time were $16 a month.

Paul and Alice were poor but not unhappy. They had little enough food, certainly, even before the children began to arrive. Each month Paul paid $5 to the moneylender. He worked hard, never taking a holiday, in time, there were seven mouths to feed.

Illness was always with them. It grew serious when the oldest child was eight. The years of hunger weakened the family, because each month Paul paid $5. The details of the sickness were ugly, but the result was this: after twelve years of family life, Paul was alone in the world.

He lived alone, except for memories. Work was not now a god for him: it was a pain-killer. Each month he paid, and in time the twenty years ended, From that moment his wages were his own.

One day, it was a holiday--he went to the seaside. He sat down on a seat by the sea. A middle-aged woman came and sat down near him. They recognized each other at once.

The woman said, "The $600 has been in the bank since the day it was paid to me. It is now $6,000, and I have kept it for you. Will you let me share it with you?

"No," said Paul, gently. "Each thousand is a lost life in a desert between us. It can never bring any happiness."

听力原文: The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of September 2nd, 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King's baker in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.

By eight o'clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul's and the Guildhall among them.

People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.

(33)

A.In a bakery.

B.In a hotel.

C.In a wooden house.

D.In old St Paul's church.

DATE: April 22

FROM: Andrew Kim

TO: Robert Dawson

SUBJECT: Grand Opening Ceremony

Hello Mr. Dawson,

It was really pleased to talk to you on the phone earlier today. As I hope I made clear to you, it is absolutely essential that we have the sound system package we ordered set up on time, as per the contract signed last week. Ceremonies begin on April 27 at 6:00 p.m. sharp. Your set-up schedule is to include a complete sound check. We don't need a repeat of last time.

Please note that due to construction, it is impossible to use Gate 1. So please have your trucks arrive at Gate 4, by 11:00 A.M. Our staff will call a construction foreman to escort you to the loading bays. In keeping with safety requirements, ensure your crew is equipped with safety vests and safety helmets, or our staff will ask them to leave the site.

If you have any special electrical needs, please contact Philip Jackson, our plant manager. His cell phone number is 604-555-4123.

FROM: Robert Dawson

TO: Mr. Andrew Kim

SUBJECT: Re: Grand Opening Ceremony

Dear Mr. Kim,

It was good to have spoken to you yesterday in person. I wish to assure you that in my new position here at Perfect Sound I will try to provide you with as seamless a process as possible.

Our sound expert, Michael Johnson, is currently scheduled to arrive at 3:00 P.M. to run the sound check, which we think will give us plenty of time to ensure everything will be up and running by the 7:00 P.M. start time.

I note that our installation personnel will be required to wear safety vests and safety helmets. I think this requirement does not apply to Michael because he is not involved in the actual physical set-up.

As regards electrical needs, I have already e-mailed Mr. Jackson all the necessary information. Please feel free to call me at 556-7658 with any concerns you may have.

Thank you for selecting Perfect Sound!

Sincerely,

Robert Dawson

Vice President

B.To negotiate a time that works for everybody.

C.To place an order for sound system services.
