New Product Will Save Lives

Drinking water that looks clean may still contain bugs (虫子) , which can cause illness. A small company called Genera Technologies has produced a testing method in three stages, which shows whether water is safe. The new test shows if water needs chemicals added to it, to destroy anything harmful. It was invented by scientist Dr. Adrian Parton, who started Genera five years ago.
He and his employees have developed the test together with a British water company.
Andy Headland, Genera&39;s marketing director, recently presented the test at a conference in the USA and forecast good American sales for it. Genera has already sold 11 of its tests at $ 42,500 a time in the UK and has a further four on order. It expects to sell another 25 tests before the end of March. The company says it is the only test in the UK to be approved by the government. Genera was formed five years ago and until October last year it had only five employees; it now employs 14. Mr. Headland believes that the company should make around $19 million by the end of the year in the UK alone.

The Old City of London gates were all 53 by the end of the 18th century. The last of London's gates was removed a century ago, but by a 54 of luck, it was never destroyed. 听力原文: I want to talk today about some studies. They seem to indicate that there is a startling world-wide decline in the number of amphibians, such as frogs, toads and salamanders. There's little doubt that one reason why the number of amphibians is declining is their habitats have been destroyed when the developers fill in ponds and marshes to build houses. Amphibians can't just move somewhere. They need water to lay their eggs in. Another problem is the growing fish industry. Another range of popular pool fish such as carp have been introduced to many lakes and ponds all over the world. Raising and selling these fish can be profitable, but the fish eat the eggs and offspring of amphibians that were already living in the lakes and ponds. Other factors could be contributing to the decline include acid rain and the spread of pesticide residues. Many pesticides that farmers added to their crops are eventually washed away by the rain and end up in ponds and other bodies of water where amphibians live. Amphibians are especially vulnerable to pesticides dissolved in the water because of their moist skins. Water can pass through amphibians allowing toxins dissolved in the water to enter the amphibians' body.

What does the speaker mainly discuss?

A.The distribution of different species of amphibians.

B.Possible reasons for reduction in the number of amphibians.

C.The effects of environmental change on the fish industry.

D.Guidelines for the responsible use of pesticides.

Is there enough oil beneath the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge(保护区)(ANWR)to help secur

Is there enough oil beneath the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge(保护区)(ANWR)to help secure America's energy future? President Bush certainly thinks so. He has argued that tapping ANWR' s oil would help ease California' s electricity crisis and provide st major boost to the country' s energy independence. But no one knows for sure how much crude oil lies buried beneath the frozen earth, with the last government survey, conducted in1998, projecting output anywhere from 3 billion to 16 billion barrels.

The oil industry goes with the high end of the range, which could equal as much as 10% of U. S. consumption for as long as six years. By pumping more than 1 million barrels a day from the reserve for the next two to three decades, lobbyists claim, the nation could cut back on imports equivalent to all shipments to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia. Sounds good. An oil boom would also mean a multibillion - dollar windfall(意久之财)in tax revenues, royalties(开采权使用费)and leasing fees for Alaska and the Federal Government. Best of all, advocates of drilling say, damage to the environment Would be in significant. "We' ve never had a documented case of an oil rig chasing deer out onto the pack ice," say Alaska State Representative Scott Ogan.

Not so fast, say environmentalists. Sticking to the low end of government estimates the National Re sources Defends Council says there may be no more than 3.2 billion barrels of economically recoverable oil in the coastal plain of ANWR, a drop in the bucket that would do virtually nothing to ease America' s energy problems. And consumers would wait up to a decade to gain any benefits, because drilling could begin only after mush bargaining over leases, environmental permits and regulatory review. As for AN WR's impact on the California power crisis, environmentalists point out that oil is responsible for only 1% of the Golden State' s electricity output--and just 3 % of the nation' s.

What does President Bush think of tapping oil in ANWR?

A.It will increase America' s energy consumption.

B.It will exhaust the nation' s oil reserves.

C.It will help reduce the nation' s oil imports.

D.It will help secure the future of ANWR.

听力原文:Researchers do not know why people think some colours are warm and other colours

听力原文: Researchers do not know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colours remind people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is low during the winter, the sunlight appears quite blue. Because the sun is higher during the summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.

People associate colours with different holidays. For example, red is associated with Valentine's Day. On February 14th, Americans send red hearts to people they love. People associate orange with Halloween in October and Thanksgiving Day in November. On October 31 st, many Americans put large orange pumpkins in their windows for Halloween. Many people wear green on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Violet is a dignified colour which is associated with Easter. On Easter Sunday, people decorate baskets with purple ribbons.

Many expressions in English use colours. These expressions show how people feel about the colours. For example, people associate red with a strong feeling like anger. When someone is very angry, people say that he or she sees red. Red is an active colour. A red-letter day is a lucky day. When criminals are caught in the middle of a crime, people say that they are caught red-handed. Green is the colour of grass and leaves. When someone grows plants well, people say he or she has green fingers. Blue is a sad, thoughtful colour. When someone is very sad, people say he or she is feeling blue. Blues is a kind of jazz that is usually very sad and slow.

A.A warm colour is a colour that is often used in restaurants.

B.A warm colour is a colour that gives off heat.

C.A warm colour is a colour near the red end of the light spectrum.

听力原文: Glasgow's history stretches back almost two thousand years and has been rich and varied. Originally a small salmon-fishing village at a crossing point on the River Clyde, Glasgow has been shaped by Battles, World Wide Trade and Heavy Industry to become a truly International City.

Founded by a Christian missionary (St Mungo), Glasgow became a major religious centre. Mungo's original church was destroyed by the wars which swept the country in the years after his death. Today's Cathedral dates from the 12th Century and has been added to in the years which followed. Provand's Lordship, the oldest house in Glasgow was built over 500 years ago for the Lord of Provan, an official of the Cathedral. The house still welcomes visitors today to view its proud history. In 1451 Glasgow became a University City. Glasgow University was originally built in the High Street area of the city, but was moved to its present site in Glasgow's West end in 1870. Glasgow has also been the site of many battles. Bishop's Castle once stood on the site now occupied by Glasgow's Royal Infirmary. Here, in 1300, William Wallace (of "Braveheart" fame) with 300 men defeated an army of 1000 English Knights who had taken possession of the castle under the English Bishop of Durham. Two centuries later the castle was again the scene of battle when two opposing forces fought for control of the Crown of Scotland then in the possession of the baby, Mary Queen of Scots. Due to its location on the west of the country, Glasgow was well positioned to send shipping to the West Indies and America. By the 18th century many merchants had acquired great wealth by importing sugar, rum and tobacco. Thus were born the Tobacco Lords who built fabulous mansions in the city.

(36)

A.An official of the Cathedral.
