听力原文: Scientists are gearing up for one of the most ambitious international research programs ever attempted: a decade-long exploration of the world's oceans to unlock some of the most closely held secrets of the creatures of the deep. Using sophisticated technology that was not available even five years ago, the scientists will rely primarily on the animals they want to study to collect the data needed to complete the "Census of Marine Life". Creatures ranging from blue whales to turtles will be fitted with satellite tracking devices that will record their every movement. The project, involving scores of institutions around the globe, is expected to cost upwards of $1 billion, and it will take at least 10 years. The scientists hope the research will tell us much more about a region of the earth we understand so poorly. That area, incidentally, covers 70 percent of the globe.

听力原文: It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs. Thanks to an English doctor and his wife, the door was opened to this zoological study. Reasoning that these animals' tremendous size must have made them terrible creatures, scientists combined two Greek words, deimos, meaning terrible, and sauros, meaning lizards, to form. the word dinosaur.

After many years of study, they determined that these beasts roamed the earth for millions of years, and ceased to exist some sixty million years ago.

Unbelievable as it may seem, not all dinosaurs were carnivorous, that is, meat eating. Many were herbivorous, or vegetarians.

By reassembling the bones found at digging sites, scientists have been able to reconstruct the skeletons and learn great deal about the dinosaur's living conditions. They have learned that dinosaurs inhabited not only the land, but also the water and sky.

听力原文: Weather scientists call hurricanes by names to make clear which storm they are talking about. An Australian weather scientist began giving women's names to storms before the end of the nineteenth century. Weather scientists used the names of their girlfriends or wives for storms during World War Two. (33) The United States weather service started officially using women's names for storms in nineteen fifty-three. In nineteen seventy-eight, it began including men's names as well.

(34) Today, scientists make up lists of names years in advance, They agree on them at meetings of the concerned organization. The lists include both American and international names.

The United States National Hurricane Center near Miami, Florida, watches for the development of storms. It gives a name to each one that reaches a wind speed of sixty-two kilometers an hour. A different list of names is used each year. The first name begins with the letter "A". The second begins with "B" and so on. The same list will not be used again for at least six years. The names of storms that have caused extremely severe damage may be retired at the request of the country that was affected. That name will not be used again for at least ten years. (35) This is done to avoid legal problems or confusion. It may be reasonable that the United States asks that the name Katrina be retired.

(34)

A.Before 19th century

B.During World War Two

C.In 1978.

D.In 1953.

听力原文: One way that scientists learn about man is by animals, such as mice, rats and monkeys. The scientists in this laboratory are experimenting on mice. They are studying the relationship between diet and health. At this time over one hundred experiments are going on in this laboratory.

In this experiment, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second is eating two cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups.

After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice. But they are more active. Also they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years. The second group of mice is normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years. The last group of mice spends most of the day eating or sleeping. They are not very ac tire. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought: about a year and a hell But they are not healthy. The experiment is still going on. The scientists hope to finish their studies in two years.

(33)

A.Mice.

B.Rats.

C.Monkeys.

D.A, B and C
