D

Our surroundings are being polluted faster than ever and it seems that people cannot prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry', more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and settle this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man—by his desire (欲望) for a modem way of life. We make "increasing industrialization" (工业化) our first aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the achievements of our modem society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourslves where we are going—and why? It makes one think of the story about the pilot (飞行员) who told his passengers over the loudspeaker: "I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we are lost and don't know where we're going." The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when speaking of our modern society.

Man cannot prevent the world from being polluted because ______.

A. the population of the world is increasing faster

B. people use too many man-made materials

C. we have more industry

D. we are producing more cars, trucks and buses

DOur surroundings are being polluted faster than ever and it seems that people cannot prev
ent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and settle this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man--by his desire (欲望) for a modern way of life. We make “increasing industrialization” (工业化) our first aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the country-side into the cities, eager for the achievements of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn’t it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going--and why? It makes one think of the story about the pilot (飞行员) who told his passengers over the loudspeaker : “I’ve some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we’re making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we are lost and don’t know where we’re going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when speaking of our modern society.

ate the tradition (传统) of storytelling.

“It might seem strange that people still want to listen to instead of watching television, but this is an unusual art form. whose time has come again, “said David Amibrose, director of Beyond the Border, an international storytelling festival (节) in Wales.

“Some of the tales, like those of the Inuit from Canada, are thousands years old. So our storytellers have come from distant lands to connect us with the distance of time.” he said early this month.

Two Inuit women, both in their mid 60s, are among the few remaining who can do Kntadjait, or throat singing, which has few words and much sound.

Their art is governed by the cold of their surroundings, forcing them to say little but listen attentively.

Ambrose started the festival in 1993, after several years of working with those reviving (coming back into use or existence) storytelling in Wales.

“It came out of a group of people who wanted to reconnect with traditions and as all the Welsh are storytellers, it was in good hands here.” Ambrose said

听力原文: There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an
earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effect of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These supporters of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization.

This debate over the demand of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mentioned cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another.

(32)

A.It has a negative effect on the natural environment.

B.The quality of our life is decreased.

C.The world's population is approaching certain limits on growth.

D.Natural resources are used up.

听力原文:W: Welcome to our programme, Mr Smith. M: Thank you. W: Mr Smith, how long have
you been a police officer? M: Ive been a police officer for thirty years. W: Thirty years. And youve had different types of assignments on the police force, I guess. M: Yeah, Ive done everything from patrol to undercover work to detective work, and now Im supervising investigations. W: Mr Smith, I think most people would say that being a police officer is a very stressful job. Would you agree? M: Yes, its definitely a stressful job. But it depends on your assignment. W: So, whats probably the most stressful job you can have? M: Id say patrol is the most stressful assignment. W: Thats interesting! In what way? M: Well, I guess the biggest part of the stress is the fear factor, the fear of the unknown. W: What do you mean, Mr Smith? M: Well, in patrol work, you dont know from moment to moment who you are talking to or what their reaction is going to be to justify your presence. Lets say, for example, a patrol officer stops someone for a traffic violation. It seems as though that would be a very low-stress situation. W: Yes, it is a very low-stress situation. M: But the truth is, there are more police officers injured during a routine stop. W: Really? M: Really! Thats why all police officers are taught from the very beginning to be aware of their surroundings: people back over policemen, people shoot policemen, people jump out at policemen — different kinds of things. So thats probably the most stressful time. W: I see. Lets take a break and then well move on to our next topic. M: All right. Questions 9 to 12 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 9. Whats the relationship between the two speakers? 10. What do we know about Mr Smith from the conversation? 11. What assignment does Mr Smith believe is the most stressful? 12. Why are all police officers taught to be aware of their surroundings from the very beginning?10.

A.He is a good supervisor.

B.He is an experienced police officer.

C.He doesn"t like his present job.

D.He enjoys doing the patrol work.
