听力原文: How do the birds manage to find their way? There seems to be no single answer: they use many methods. Some we are beginning to understand; and there may be some that depend on abilities we have not yet suspected. Many birds certainly follow major geographical features. Migrants follow recognized land, fly over familiar sea and arrive at their summer homes.

But all birds cannot use such straightforward methods. An Arctic sea bird, for example, has to fly at least 3,000 kilometers across the Antarctic Ocean with no land to guide it. We know that some birds flying at night, navigate by the star for on cloudy nights they tend to get lost.

Day-flying birds may use the sun. If they are to do so, they must have a precise sense of time. Still others appear to be able to use the earth' s magnetic field as a guide. So it seems that many migrating birds must carry in their brains a clock, a compass and the memory of a map.

(33)

A.They use many different methods.

B.All birds follow major geographical features.

C.All birds use their memory of a map.

D.We have no information about this.

听力原文: Do you know that there's a kind of bird that can sew? This bird, called the tailorbird, uses its mouth as a needle. It sews leaves together in a shape of a cup. Then it adds a layer of straw to the inside of the cup and lays its eggs there. Each bird species builds its own special kind of nest. The most common materials used for nests are grasses, branches and feathers. A bird must weave these materials into a nest. Just imagine building a house without cement or nails to hold it together. Another bird is called the weaverbird. The weaverbird builds a nest that looks like a basket. The nest is shaped like a pear with a hole in the middle. The hole is the door of the nest. The third bird is called the ovenbird. The ovenbird makes a nest that is very solid. The nest is made of mud. The ovenbird forms the mud into the shape of an oven and then lets it dry in the sun. The sun bakes the mud, making it very hard. Not all birds make their homes in branches. Some birds build their nests on the ground, while others bury their eggs under the ground. And some birds do not build nests at all. So when you look for nests and eggs in the branches of trees and bushes, remember, that some nests may be right under your feet.

C.An egg.

听力原文:An "early bird" used to be a person who was awake early and began his(or her) day

听力原文: An "early bird" used to be a person who was awake early and began his(or her) day's work before other people. The people, who said it, were thinking of an old saying: It is the early bird that catches the worm. But since 1965 the Early Bird has had a different meaning. The modem Early Bird is a communications satellite in orbit round the earth.

The use of wires to carry telephone communications and for other purposes of the same kind does not satisfy modem needs. We had to use radio. But the radio waves that we use for these purposes--microwaves--travel in straight lines. They do not follow the curve of the earth's surface. We can send them from one radio station to another—a relay station--where we amplify them and send them do a third station. If there is no relay station within about 50 kilometers to receive the microwaves, they will continue into space. At a certain height, some of them are sent back to earth. A powerful station several hundred kilometers from their starting point can receive them. But these are not good ways of sending the thousands of telephone, radio and television signals across the oceans.

(36)

A.A person who is awake early.

B.A bird that catches the worm early in the morning.

C.A plane which flies in the morning.

D.A communications satellite in orbit round the earth.
