阅读:The concept of personal choice in relation to health behaviors is an important one

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

The concept of personal choice in relation to health behaviors is an important one.An estimated 90 percent of all illnesses may be preventable if individuals would make sound personal health choices based upon current medical knowledge.

We all enjoy our freedom of choice and do not like to see it restricted when it is within the legal and moral boundaries of society.[ZZ)]The structure of American society allows us to make almost all our own personal decisions that may concern our health. If we so desire,we can smoke, drink excessively, refuse to wear seat belts, eat whatever foods we want, and live a completely sedentary life-style. without any excuse. The freedom to make such personal decisions is a fundamental aspect of our society, although the wisdom of these decisions can be questioned.Personal choices relative to health often cause a difficulty. As one example,a teenager may know the facts relative to smoking cigarettes and health but may be pressured by friends into believing it is the socially accepted thing to do.A multitude of factors, both inherited and environmental, influence the development of healthrelated behaviors, and it is beyond the scope of this text to discuss all these factors as they may affect any given individual. However, the decision to adopt a particular health-related behavior. is usually one of personal choices.

There are healthy choices and there are unhealthy choices. In discussing the moral of personal choice,Fries and Crapo drew a comparison.[ZZ(Z]They suggest that to knowingly give oneself over to a behavior. that has a statistical probability of shortening life is similar to attempting suicide.[ZZ)]Thus, for those individuals who are interested in preserving both the quality and quantity of life, personal health choices should reflect those behaviors that are associated with statistical probability of increased vitality and longevity.

A.personal health choices help cure most illnesses B.it helps raise the level of our medical knowledge

38. Sound personal health choice is often difficult to make because____.

A.current medical knowledge is still insufficient

B.there are many factors influencing our decisions

C.few people are willing to trade the quality of life for longevity

D.people are usually influenced by the behavior. of their friends 

39. To knowingly allow oneself to pursue unhealthy habits is compared by Fries and Crapo to____.

A.improving the quality of one's life

B.limiting one's personal health choice

C.deliberately ending one's life

The Adjustment in Understanding of Man"s Relation to the Physical Universe

Nowadays the scattering of galaxies and the astounding abundance of stars are forcing those who ponder such matters to a further adjustment of their concept of the place and function of man in the material universe.

In the history of the51human mind, with its increasing knowledge of the surrounding context, there must have been a time when the philosophers of the52tribes began to realize that the world was not simply centered on man himself. The geocentric concept, which accepted a universe centered on the earth, then became common53

The second adjustment in the understanding of man"s relation to the physical universe was not generally acceptable54the sixteenth century. Copernican revolution soundly55the heliocentric Concept, the theory of a universe56on the sun. Man is a stubborn adherent to official dogma; eventually, however, he accepted the sun as the center.

Then, forty years ago, came the need for a third adjustment. This57has deeply exploded man"s pride and58, for it has carried with it the knowledge of the appalling number of galaxies.

The galactocentric universe59puts the earth and its life near the edge of one great galaxy in a universe of millions of galaxies. Man becomes peripheral among the billions of stars of his own Milky Way; and, according to the revelations of paleontology and geochemistry, he is60and apparently transient in the61of cosmic time.

The downgrading of the earth and sun and the elevation of the galaxies is not the end of this62of scientific pilgrims through philosophic fields. The need for another63adjustment now64not wholly unexpected by scientists,65wholly the result of one or two scientific revelations.

Our new problem concerns the spread of life throughout the universe. As unsolicited spokesmen for all the earthly organisms of land, sea, and air, we ask the thrilling question: Are we alone?

Forty May Be the New 30 As Scientists Redefine Age

Is 40 really the new 30? In many ways people today act younger than their parents did at the same age.

Scientists have defined a new age concept and believe it could explain why populations are aging, but at the same time seem to be getting younger.

Instead of measuring aging by how long people have lived, the scientists have factored in how many more years people can probably still look forward to.

"Using that measure, the average person can get younger in the sense that he or she can have even more years to live as time goes on," said Warren Sanderson of the University of New York in Stony Brook.

He and Sergei Scherbov of the Vienna Institute of Demography (人口统计学) at the Austrian (奥地利的) Academy of Sciences, have used their method to estimate how the proportion of elderly people in Germany, Japan and the United States will change in the future.

The average German was 39.9 years old in 2000 and could plan to live for another 39.2 years, according to research reported in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

However, by 2050 the average German will be 51.9 years old and will be expected to live another 37.1 years. So middle age in 2050 would occur at around 52 years instead of 40 years as in 2000.

"As people have more and more years to live they have to save more and plan more and they effectively are behaving as if they were younger," said Sanderson.

Five years ago, the average American was 35.3 years old and could plan for 43.5 more years of life. By 2050, the researchers estimate it will increase to 41.7 years and 45.8 future years.

"A lot of our ski/Is, our education, our savings and the way we dear with our health care depend a great deal on how many years we have to live," said Sanderson.

This dimension of how many years people have to live has been completely ignored in the discussion of aging so far.

People 40 years of age today seem to be as young as______.

A.their parents were at the same age.

B.their parents were at the age of 30.

C.their children will be at the same age.

D.their children will be at the age of 30.
