Man: Hello. Could I speak to John White?

Woman: He's not in the office today, I'm afraid.

He's in London for a conference. Would you like to leave a message for him?

Man: Yes, I think I'd better. This is Patrick Fisher from A & L Systems. I wanted to tell John that the computers he ordered will be arriving tomorrow.

Woman: Oh, yes. He's been expecting them to arrive this week.

Man: Will he be in the office tomorrow?

Woman: Yes, he should be back. It's only a one-day conference.

Man: It's just that he'll have to speak to the technician who'll be coming out to see you. Her name is Sarah Robbins, she'll be arriving about 10 o'clock and she'll need to be told where to install the computers. I haven't been given any instructions, and anyway, it's much easier to sort that out on the day.

Woman: OK, I'll leave the message on his desk so that he gets it first thing tomorrow morning.

Man: If there are any problems, I'll be in the office tomorrow and he can ring me. The number's 55 31 06.

听力原文:American names are written and spoken with tile given name first real the family

听力原文: American names are written and spoken with tile given name first real the family name last. So John Smith's family name is Smith, not John.

In a formal setting, address men as "Mister", married women as "Misses", mad unmarried women as "Miss". These days many women prefer to be addressed using the abbreviations "Ms. ", pronounced "miz". If the person has an M.D. or Ph.D., they will often be addressed as "Doctor". Faculty are addressed as "Professor".

In an informal situation, Americans will introduce each other by their first name, without titles, and occasionally by just their last name. If you are introduced to somebody by their first name, you can address him or her by their first name the next time you meet. The only exception would be for someone who holds an important position, such as the university president. Unless they tell you otherwise, faculty should be addressed using their title and last name.

When in doubt, use tile formal manner of address, since it is better to make mistakes on the side of formality. It is always appropriate to ask how they prefer to be addressed.

Children should always address adults in the formal fashion, using their rifle and last name.

(23)

A.Family name first, given name last.

B.Given name first, family name last.

C.Middle name first, family name last.

D.Given name first, middle name last.

Hawaii's native minority is demanding a greater degree of sovereignty over its own affairs
. But much of the archipelago's political establishment, which includes the White Americans who dominated until the second world war and people of Japanese, Chinese and Filipino origin, is opposed to the idea.

The islands were annexed by the US in 1898 and since then Hawaii's native peoples have fared worse than any of its other ethnic groups. They make up over 60 percent of the state's homeless, suffer higher levels of unemployment and their life span is five years less than the average Hawaiians. They are the only major US native group without some degree of autonomy.

But a sovereignty advisory committee set up by Hawaii's first native governor, John Waihee, has given the natives' cause a major boost be recommending that the Hawaiian natives decide by themselves whether to re-establish a sovereign Hawaiian nation.

However, the Hawaiian natives are not united in their demands. Some just want greater autonomy with the state—as enjoyed by many American Indian natives over matters such as education. This is a position supported by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), a state agency set up in 1978 to represent to natives' interests and which has now become the moderate face of the native sovereignty movement. More ambitious in the Ka Lahui group, which declared itself a new nation in 1987 and wants full, official independence from the US.

But if Hawaiian natives are given greater autonomy, it is far from clear how many people this will apply to. The state authorities only count as native those people with more than 50 percent Hawaiian blood.

Native demands are not just based on political grievances, though. They also want their claim on 660,000 hectares of Hawaiian crown land to be accepted. It is on this issue that native groups are facing most opposition from the state authorities. In 1933, the state government paid the OHA USS 136 million in back rent on the crown land and many officials say that by accepting this payment the agency has given up its claims to legally own the land. The OHA has vigorously disputed this.

Hawaii's native minority refers to ______.

A.people of Filipino origin

B.the Ka Lahui group

C.people with 50% Hawaiian blood

D.Hawaii's ethnic groups

听力原文:Stocks can be divided into two categories: those for trading and those for invest

听力原文: Stocks can be divided into two categories: those for trading and those for investing. Within trading stocks, you make money by figuring out whether other traders will keep buying or start selling the stock and positioning yourself accordingly for a few weeks or even days. By contrast, with investing stocks you aim to buy into a company at an attractive price, given the worth of its assets and likely future profits, regardless of when the value will be recognized by the market. This way, you can steer clear of overpaying for fashionable dogs.

There's nothing revolutionary about this strategy, of course. It's just a question of calmly mixing and matching some old, and apparently somewhat contradictory, stock market wisdom and applying it to a hot market. About 70 years ago, British economist John Maynard Keynes said investors should view the market as a beauty contest, and they should mainly buy, trading stocks that other people would find attractive. Benjamin Graham, the father of modem securities analysis, bristled at that idea. He lamented that stock buyers, though almost always called investors, are often actually speculators. Instead, he preached that they should make a hardnosed assessment of the inherent value of companies and search out investing stocks.

What is the most appropriate title for this passage?

A.Two Types of Stocks

B.A New Strategy of Investment

C.Distinctions between Trading and Investment

D.Conflicting Perspectives on Stock Investment
