听力原文: I wasn't too fond of the lecture classes of 400 students that were in my general courses. Halfway through my second term, when I was considering whether or not to come back in the fall, I went on the Internet and came across AmeriCorps. Then I joined the organization. And that was what I did last school year. I worked on making roads, building a house and serving as a teacher's assistant. It's been a great experience.

And I've almost learned more than what I could have in college. Since I didn't really want to ha at that school and I wasn't interested in my major anyway, I think this was better for me. After 1,700 hours of service, I received 4,750 dollars. I can use that to pay off the money I harrowed from the banks or for what I need when I go hack to school this fall at Columbus State in Ohio. Classes are smaller there, and I'll be majoring in German education. After working with the kids, now I know I want to be a teacher.

Why did the man decide to leave the college in his second term?

A.He didn't like the big lecture classes.

B.He couldn't afford further education.

C.He was not interested in education.

听力原文:W: Wasn't that a terrific lecture on dolphins? I didn't know that dolphins travel
ed in such large groups, or were able to communicate with other members of their group with those whistle-like sounds.

M: And they also use clicks as a sort of sonar.

W: I really couldn't understand that part of the lecture. You could?

M: Yes, the dolphins use clicks to identify objects in the water; they can even identify tiny objects more than 100 meters away using these clicks. Scientists believe that a dolphin may even have a sonar-like image in its brain of a distant object so that it can identify the object long before the dolphin can actually see the object.

W: So the dolphins use these clicks mostly to identify objects in the water?

M: I think so, and they have considerably more ability to do this than humans do.

W: It is hard to believe that, in addition to these sonar clicks, dolphins are actually learning some human language.

M: Yes, I believe that the lecture said that some dolphins had already learned around fifty human commands, and that those dolphins were able to understand not only individual words but words clustered together in sentences!

W: Dolphins must certainly be amazing animals to do all of that.

M: I'm sure they are, and we're only just beginning to find out how intelligent they are.

Where did the woman learn about dolphins?

A.In a book..

B.From a television program.

C.During a trip that she took..

D.From a lecture.

听力原文:M: Hey, Sue. I was wondering if you could fill me in on Monday's class. I had to
go the dentist for an emergency and I missed Prof. Smith's lecture. What was it on?

W: It was pretty interesting. She talked about volcanoes, active volcanoes, under the -- uh -- West Antarctic ice sheet.

M: There ere active volcanoes under the ice?

W: Apparently so. She said they help protect the ice sheet and prevent melting. Flooding would be pretty bad if that ice melted, not only there, but all over the world.

M: You lost me there. Volcanoes are hot. How can something hot prevent ice from melting?

W: Wait a minute, let me check my notes. Yeah, here it is. Volcanic heat melts just enough ice to create a slippery surface on the bottom of the glacier. This water allows ice to flow out into the ocean. So the solid interior ice is protected from the ocean's warmth. Does that make sense?

M: Son of. You mean that because the ice is flowing out to the ocean, the warmer ocean water can't flow in.

W: Exactly. And the ice that melts is constantly being replaced by snow. Prof. Smith said that if the ice sheet ever broke up and melted, the sea level would go up seven meters. Then we would have those floods.

M: Is that really possible? Or is it one of those exaggerations you hear all the time?

W: As far as I can understand, it is possible, because of global warming. I mean if the ocean got a lot warmer that interior ice would be very likely to melt.

M: Thanks for telling me about the lecture. Sounds like I've missed a pretty important class.

Why did the man ask about the lecture?

(20)

A.He wasn't present at the lecture.

B.He didn't listen to the lecture attentively.

C.He didn't appreciate the lecture.

D.He disliked some part of the lecture.

听力原文:M: What do you think of Professor Potter's course, Jane?

W: Not much.

M: Why, what's wrong with it?

W: Oh, I don't know. It's just that he overloads it with details. That course he gave on town planning last year. It was just the same load of details, which you could have got from a book anyway. There was no overall...

M: No general overview you mean?

W: Yes. I suppose you could call it that. I couldn't see the town for the buildings.

M: But you've got to have details in this kind of subject. Anyway I think he's good. You take his first lecture for instance. I thought that was very interesting, and not at all over-detailed.

W: Well, he starts off all right, but then he just piles on the details.

M: Now you're exaggerating.

W: Well, the way he dealt with the western developments, that wasn't bad, I suppose.

M: You seem to have got something. Perhaps Potter is a little disorganized, but I think he's good.

W: Do you really think so?

M: He does do most of his teaching to the postgraduates. He only does the one undergraduate course each year. After all, I think he tends to forget where he is. He starts off being nice and general and then tries to cram in a bit too much specialized information.

W: The main thing I object to is this lack of direction.

(12)

A.Very good.

B.Too general.

C.Meticulous and too specialized.

D.Clear and interesting.

听力原文:M: I just finished reading a book of short stories by Hemlen Garlen called May Tr
aveled.Road. I really enjoyed it. Have you ever read it?

W: Yes, it was a required reading in the American literature course I took last year, even though it's fic tion, you get a realistic picture of the hard life people had on the American frontier. I don't think I would survive 19th century frontier life.

M: Me neither. Remember that story among the car roads. Garlen gives a vivid description of Julie Peterson, that young immigrant girl, she had to work on her family farm.

W: Ah, yeah!

M: Well, when Julie felt exhausted she was wishing she could escape from her hard labor, she looked over her father working in the next field. And she was inspired to continue her own work.

W: I do remember that story. Garlen really captures the spirit of hard work that was so typical of immigrants and pioneers who settled the American Mid west. It's difficult to imagine that nothing seems to discourage them for long.

M: I wonder how Garlen learned so much about the Midwest. Wasn't he from Boston?

W: He lived in Boston. In fact, he studied and taught in the Boston School of Oritory, but I think he was born in Lawcarbinlen, Wincosin. He did grow up in the Midwest.

M: No wonder his description is so good, I'm going to take this book back to the library now and what' other Garlen's works I can find.

(20)

A.The woman's recent trip to the American Midwest.

B.A lecture in their American literature course.

C.A film about the American frontier.

D.A book they both read.

Memory Test

1 "I am going to give you five techniques that will enable you to remember anything you need to know at school, "promised lecturer Ian Robinson to a hundred schoolchildren. He slapped his hand down on the table. "When I've finished in two hours' time, your work will be far more effective and productive. Anyone not interested, leave now. "The entire room sat still.

2 Robinson calls himself the Mind Magician (魔术师). He specializes in doing magic tricks that look totally impossible, and then he reveals that they involve nothing more mysterious than good old-fashioned trickery (骗术). "I have always been interested in tricks involving memory-being able to reel off (一口气说出) the order of cards in a pack, that sort of thing, "he explains.

3 Robinson was already lecturing to schools on his magic techniques when it struck him that students might find memory techniques even more valuable. "It wasn't difficult area to move inot, as the stuff's all there in books. "So he summarized everything to make a two-hour lecture about five techniques.

4 "You want to learn a list of a hundred things? A thousand? No problem, "says Robinson. The scandal is that every child is not taught the techniques from the beginning of their school life. The schoolchildren who were watching him thought it was brilliant. "I wish I'd been told this earlier, "commented Mark, after Robinson had shown them how to construct "mental journeys".

5 Essentially, you visualize (想象) a walk down a street, or a trip round a room, and pick the points where you will put the things you want to remember-the lamppost, the fruit bowl. Then in each location you put a visual representation of your list-phrasal verbs, historical dates, whatever-making them as strange as possible. It is that simple, and it works.

6 The reaction of schools has been uniformly enthusiastic. "The pupils benefited enormously from Ian's presentation, "says Dr Johnston, head of the school where Robinson was speaking. "Ideally we should run a regular class in memory techniques so pupils can pick it up gradually. "

A. Good results

B. An ancient skill

C. Gaining attention

D. Memory tricks

E. A lecture on memory techniques

F. Ways to improve memory
