Women' s Right Movement

1.Women's rights are guarantees(保证)of political, social and economic equality for women in a society that traditionally gives more power and freedom to men.Among these rights are control of property, equality of opportunity in education and employment, right of voting, and freedom of marriage.Today, complete political, economic and social equality with men remains to be achieved.

2.Male control was obvious from the time of the earliest written historical records.probably as a result of men's role in hunting and warfare. The belief that women were naturally weaker and inferior to men was also found in god-centered religions. Therefore,in most traditional societies, women generally were at a disadvantage.Their education was limited to learning domestic skills, and they had no access to positions of power.A woman had no legal control over her person, her own land and money, or her children.

3.The Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.which caused economic and social progress, provided a favorable climate for the rise of women's rights movement in the late 18th and 19~ eenrury. In 1848, more than 100 persons held the first women's rights convention in New York, and the feminists(女权主义者)demanded equal rights, ineluding the vote.

4.In the late 1960s, women made up about 40 percent of the work force in England,

France, Germany, and the United States. This figure rose to more than 50 percent by the mid-1980s.A commission under the President was established in 1960 to consider equal opportunities for women.Acts of Congress entitled them to equality in education, employment, and legal rights. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act, initially intended only for blacks,Was eXtended to Women.

5.The objectives of the women’s movement included equal pay for equal work, federal support for daycare centers, recognition of lesbian(女同性恋者)rights, making abortion(堕胎)legal, and the focus of serious attention on the problems of forced sex relations。wife and child heating, and discrimination against older and minority women.

听力原文: Susan Anthony was born in Massachusetts in 1820 and died in Rochester, N.Y., in 1906. In the 1850s, she saw many problems in her country and wanted to do something about them. One d these problems was that women did not have the right to vote in the United States. Susan Anthony and many others felt that women and men should have equal rights. In 1869 she helped start the National Women's Association. This group worked hard to get women the right to vote in the United States.

In 1869, the state of Wyoming gave women the right to vote. Some other states also allowed women to vote. But Susan Anthony and the National American Women' s Association wanted all women to have the right to vote. They worked to add this to the Constitution of the United States. Finally, in 1920, fourteen years after Susan Anthony's death, an article was added to the Constitution. It gave all American women the right to vote.

听力原文:W: Now without getting heavy on that but we were talking about women's liberation
in Australia. That was one of the first countries. And I was merely going to say that we didn't have those things in Denmark. Women were equal in Denmark as far as I grew up.

M: You were going to tell a story about how you came to Melbourne and you walked in to this pub for the first time.

W: My first experience of that kind of separation of men and women, which I never had any understanding about...I never knew about that...and my first experience was in Melbourne. Down on the corner was this pub and I am going to go in with the boys and have a beer and then I thought, imagine all the girls. There are no girls here. There are only men. Where are all the girls? Well, women are not allowed in this bar here. It's only men.

M: Public bar...the women and children used to sit in the Ladies' Lounge. It was so awfully ugly, right? And unappetizing. Bad light and totally ugly, right? So no woman with respect for herself would sit in there...

W: All right and here comes then Germaine Greer...arrives...some years later.., she arrives on the scene. And the next time I visit a pub was in Esk and two women walked into the public bar and said "we would like a beer" and they can't get served in that bar and they said "no, we are not going to move" and there were a lot of things about police and all sorts of things coming in to it and it was...in the newspaper.

M: And they chained themselves to the bar, didn't they? Oh, that was in Coronation Drive, Regatta Hotel.

W: Yeah, well, they did it up in Esk too. It was on then.

M: Right, she chained herself to the Regatta Hotel bar.

W: The Regatta Hotel bar. That's famous.

M: I wonder if she's still around.

W: Anyhow...But that was just a talk.

M: No, but that's absolutely right. And that was in 1972.

W: But it was that type of thing.

M: It's only bloody...sorry...more than 30 years ago...
