Remembering My Grandparents

When memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty -- a great tall man with thick hair becoming gray. He had black eyes and a straight nose which ended in a slightly flattened tip. Once he explained seriously to me that he got that flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped On his nose. The little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the product of a kindly and humorous nature. The years of work which had bent his shoulders had never dulled his humor nor his love of a joke. Everywhere he went, "Gramp" made friends easily. At the end of half an hour you felt you had known him all your life. I soon learned that he hated to give orders, but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like suggestions. One July morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said, "Edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that." Then he drove away with his horses. The day passed, and I did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. Evening came and the potatoes were still in the field. Gramp, dusty and tired, led the horses to get their drink."How many bags of potatoes were there?" Gramp inquired."I don't know."

"How many potatoes did you pick up?"

"I didn't pick any."

"Not any! Why not?"

"You said I could pick them up if I wanted to. You didn't say I had to."

In the next few minutes I learned a lesson I would not forget, when Gramp said I could if I wanted to, he meant that I should want to.My grandmother ("Gram") worked hard all day, washing clothes, cleaning the house, making butter, and even working in the field when help was scarce. In the evening, though, she was not too tired to read books from the community library. For more than forty years Gram read aloud to Gramp almost every evening. In this way she and Gramp learned about all the great battles of history and became familiar with the works of great authors and the lives of famous men.Gram hated cruelty and injustice. The injustices of history, even those of a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own day.She also had a deep love of beauty. When she was almost seventy-five, and had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave her pleasure. The birds, the flowers, the clouds -- all that was beautiful around her -- pleased her. She was like the father of the French painter, Millet, who used to gather grass and show it to his son, saying, "See how beautiful this is!"

In a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that are of value. The softer virtues are considered unnecessary. Men and women struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the business of preserving their lives. Only unusual people, like my grandparents, manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle.Such were the two people with whom I spent the months from June to September in the wonderful days of summer and youth.

During the past fifteen years a great deal of attention has been given to "letting it all hang out".

My impression is that this over-zealous devotion to speaking one' s mind has more often led to hurt feelings and ruined relationships than to great joy and fulfillment.

I think we generally agree that holding in real feelings and never expressing less-than-lovely thoughts about each other hardly lead to constructive communication. It' s a great relief to allow ourselves the luxury of admitting our human weaknesses and pursuing more honest relationships with oth-ers. But we need to strike a balance between telling it all and telling nothing.

Recently I received a letter from a mother who had been persuaded by her troubled twenty-five-

year-old son to attend a weekend "truth" marathon with him. Under pressure from the group, her de-fenses collapsed and she heard herself telling her son for the first time that he had been an accident-that she hadn't been planning to have a child. He in turn told her that he couldn't recall a single dayin his childhood that he'd been happy.

"At that time," this woman wrote, "it seemed helpful. We cried and we made up; I thought

telling the truth had been good for us. But the trouble is, it wasn't the whole truth. By the time

Tommy was born, I did want him, and at times he was happy. Ever since that day, we' ve both been disturbed by some terrible feelings we shared. "

I must admit we've come to the conclusion that some things are better left unsaid. Honesty is a

fine policy as long as we know what the truth really is-but most of the time we don't. It's a fine

goal to encourage children to express their real feelings. But we need a new sense of balance. Telling it all is not a cure-all for every problem nor even an end in itself. It's useful and freeing under some circumstances and terribly hurtful and damaging under others.

It' s a good idea, I think, to bite your tongue for ten or fifteen minutes before saying what' s on

your mind. Try to decide whether it's going to open up new and better avenues of communication or leave wounds that may never heal.

46.The expression "letting it all hang out" means "________ .

[A] balancing all thoughts

[B] expressing all real feelings

[C] considering all relationships

[D] admitting all human weaknesses

听力原文:W: You read this? A couple that couldn't have a baby cloned the husband, and the
wife is now in the family way!

M: Oh, you mean the wife is going to give birth to her husband?

W: Right. The child will be born in two months and the couple won't feel sad about having no children! How great!

M: But isn't that strange? How could the father face another self! You see, they'll look exactly the same! And if they had decided to clone the wife, she'd be giving birth to herself!

W: Well, isn't it charming to live your own life again? I think human cloning is beneficial in many ways, such as providing remedies for new incurable diseases, prolonging one's life, and so on.

M: That's very good, but what'll be the relationship between the parents and their cloned copy? What responsibilities should people take for their own clone? And what if the child falls in love with his own mother one day? As I see it, human cloning is unethical and must be prohibited!

W: Well, maybe human cloning still has a long way to go, or, maybe, the couple would be better of adopting a child.

Who has the couple cloned?

A.The wife.

B.The husband.

C.The baby.

D.A sheep.

&8226;Read the article below about why and how to find a good boss.

&8226;Choose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill each of the gaps.

&8226;For each gap 8--12, mark one letter (A--G) on your Answer Sheet.

&8226;Do not use any letter more than once.

APPLYING FOR A NEW BOSS

When I went off to college, I got one piece of advice from my father: "It doesn't matter what courses you take, just find the great professors." Sure enough, I soon discovered that all subjects were interesting, as long as I had good teachers. Great teaching is not limited to school, though. An excellent boss can do the same thing, turning every day into a learning experience. He can give you confidence, making you more willing to ask a question, take on responsibility, or even suggest a change in some out-of-date company policy. (8) .

My advice, then, is not to interview for the right job. Instead, interview for the right boss--not a best friend, but someone who is willing and able to help you grow professionally.

What are some signs of the wrong boss? Well, anyone who:

&8226;is surrounded by the same team year after year. If you're such a good teacher, why aren't these people moving on to better positions?

&8226;lacks a sense of humor. Life is short. Work is hard. Let's lighten up when the mailroom loses a package, OK? (9) .

&8226;loves typing, and has a hatred toward talking. (10) Who are the best bosses I've had?

Angela, my first boss out of college, was smart and direct--she was not afraid to call a spade a spade. She ruffled feathers around the company, but would readily let me in on what she thought and why. She'd been there 30 years but was still a busybody--I loved that.

(11) Trust your instincts. Be yourself and see if he is someone you want to learn from for a couple of years. If that person is dull, distant, or passive in an interview, guess what they're going to be like Monday through Friday.

Interviewees are on their best behavior. in that type of climate, but so are interviewers. You don't like what you see? The power is yours--go and check out other bosses before you jump aboard for the long run.

Churchill divided people into two groups--those for whom work is work and pleasure is pleasure, and those for whom work is pleasure. (12) If you're in the same group, then he could very well be just the teacher for you.

A But how do you know when you've found the right boss?

B There's no reason to get your nose out of joint.

C Why are you continually emailing me when I sit across the hall?

D Great teaching is not limited to school, though.

E In short, a great boss knows how to teach.

F Whichever you are, my recommendation is to make sure you know where both you and your boss belong.

G A great boss both gives and earns respect.

听力原文:W: A great day, isn't it?

M: I guess so. But I feel awful because I watched TV until after midnight last night.

W: After midnight! Did you watch so late because you were bored? I usually watch TV only ff I have nothing better to do.

M: Bored? No, I was upset because I left my meal tickets in the cafeteria.

W: That worth more than fifty dollars. So, did watching TV make you feel better?

M: A bit. But after I turned the TV off, I just felt disgusted with myself for wasting so much time.

W: I've had that feeling before.

M: I had intended to watch just one program, but somehow I couldn't make myself switch off the TV.

W: Actually, I've read that there's a scientific explanation for that. It seems that there's a part of the brain that processes complex information, but that part becomes less active while watching TV.

M: That's certainly how I felt last night--like my brain wasn't very active.

W: That's not the worst of it. If you watch TV a lot, or for a long time, that part of the brain--the part that processes complex information, shows lowered activity and you become more and more passive.

M: That's incredible.

W: Next time you feel upset, you should go swimming. That's what I do, and it always makes me feel better.

M: I suppose. Now I've got to go to the cafeteria and get some more meal tickets.

(23)

A.When she's bored.

B.When there is a good program on.

C.After midnight.

D.After swimming.
