The producers of instant (立即的)coffee found their product strongly resisted (抵制) in the market places although their product has many advantages. Furthermore, the cost of the advertising of instant coffee was far higher than that of regular coffee. Gay Marriage Storms US Political Primetime
In the space of a few months, gay marriage in the United States has been transformed from a margin al issue into one of the hottest topics of the day with crucial legal and political ramifications.
Its importance was underlined Tuesday with President George W. Bush's public endorsement—in an election year—of a proposal to amend the US Constitution in a way that would ban same-sex marriage altogether.
The hugely divisive issue burst to prominence in November, following a landmark ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Court that preventing same-sex couples from marrying violated the state's constitution.
The decision opened the way for Massachusetts to become the first state in the country to legalise gay marriage and laid down the battle lines between advocates, who argue in terms of equal human rights,
and opponents, who warn that the "sacred" institution of marriage is under threat.
Same-sex unions are under judicial review in Indiana, New Jersey and Arizona, and supporters were given a further boost last year when Canada legalised gay marriage, Causing many American couples to make the trip north of the border.
But at home, opposition is strong and highly organised, with family groups and conservative politicians the most vocal in their condemnation of any form. of recognition being extended to same-sex couples. A New York Times/CBS News poll taken in mid-February showed 61 percent still 'oppose gay marriage.
The social divisions surrounding the issue were brought into sharp relief earlier this month when the mayor of San Francisco decided to challenge California state laws by issuing the country's first-ever marriage licenses to gay couples. Some 3,300 same-sex partners have so far taken advantage of the mayor's largesse, despite moves by conservative opponents to get a court injunction preventing the unions taking place.
For couples like Marcye and Karen Nicholson-McFadden, who have lived together in New Jersey for 14 years and are raising two children, marriage would provide legal rights covering a host of issues from reduced car insurance to hospital visits and inheritance.
"These are rights everybody else takes for granted, and which you become so much more aware of when you have kid," said Marcye. "There is no legal connection between us. Our son understands marriage means commitment, and all this makes him feel insecure."
Michael Dimock of the Pew Research Center, which studies opinions towards public policy issues, says resistance to same-sex marriage tends to be strongest among regular churchgoers and older people.
"And then there are a lot of people who are just resistant to the idea of changing the definition (of marriage), and how society operates," Dimock said. "People express concern about its implications for the legal system, and what it's going to mean for the notion of family."
Thirty-eight US states have laws stipulating that marriage is an institution for heterosexuals only. Under the court decision in Massachusetts, the state must begin issuing marriage licenses on request to same-sex partners beginning May 17. Local legislators have so far failed to agree on proposals to sidestep the court by amending the state constitution.

Getting the Best Value for Time
Are you satisfied with what you achieve in the hours spent studying, or do you wonder where all the time has gone, without much to show for it？ How hard are you really working？ Here are some hints to help you make the most of your study time.
Ⅰ. EFFECTIVE LEARNING
1. Review lecture notes as soon after a lecture as possible. Half an hour spent while the lecture is still fresh in your mind will do more to help you to develop an understanding of what you have heard and remember it than twice the time later on. It can be helpful to go over new work with other students to check that you have grasped all the points.
2. If you have been given an essay or assignment to do, note accurately what is required and start it when your memory of it is clear.
3. Revise and review regularly. Set regular weekly times to review the work in each course. This revision should be cumulative -- adding a bit to the total at a time, covering briefly all the work done so far in the term. This way you will consolidate the groundwork and avoid panic before exams.
4. When you revise, space out the time devoted to any one topic. You will learn more in six one hour periods spread over one week than in one six hour period.
5. Limit your blocks of study to 2 hours on any one topic or type of work. After 1/2 to 2 hours of intensive study you begin to tire and concentration weakens. Take a break at some "achievement point"(end of a chapter, solving a problem, etc. )and then changing to another part of the course or another type of work(e. g. ,from reading to writing)will provide the change necessary to keep up your efficiency.
6. Find out the best times for working for yourself. Some times may be better than others for different types of work and also for your own biological clock: if you tend to feel sleepy in the afternoon, this may not be the best time to try to read history or work out math problems. You may think that working in to the early hours suits you, but does it fit in with an early class next morning？ You are likely to feel tired next day and so gain nothing!
Ⅱ. PRACTICAL STEPS
1. Plan a program of balanced activities. University life has many aspects which are important for getting fie benefit from your time here. Some activities have fixed time requirements(e. g. , classes, meetings, sport), others are more flexible(e. g. , recreation, relaxation, study time, personal matters, eating, sleeping).
2. Plan how you will use your study time. Knowing what you are going to do and when saves a lot of time spent on making decisions, false starts, retracing your steps to get the books you need, etc. Commit yourself to studying a particular assignment at a particular time.
3. Study at a regular time and in a regular place. You will learn to associate that time and place with working. This is after all what the world' s workers have to do.
4. Trade time and don' t steal it. When something unexpected happens and takes up time you had planned for study, decide immediately how you can make up the study missed.
5. Give yourself rewards for work completed on time(e. g., 2 hours solid work = 1 cup of tea or coffee; essay completed = 1 hour' s TV ). After a strenuous evening finishing an essay or a set of problems, allow yourself "unwinding time" before bed.
Ⅲ. PLANNING TIME
Working out a time-table will not turn you into a perfectly efficient person, but having a plan and sticking to it for a few weeks can help you to form. better study habits and actually to save time, so that in the end you have more free time than before. Conversations Can Be the Key to a Manager's Success
A. Retaining top talent is one of the greatest challenges in today's corporate world. And managers play a critical role in influencing an employee's decision to stay with, or leave, a company. So what can managers do to help？ They should listen. Smart managers realize they have to make listening a priority. If they don't, team members may become disgruntled and Use other channels to communicate their messages which can send ripples throughout an organization. Managers who lack opportunities to listen, really listen, to the issues expressed by team members, can create opportunities through regular conversations.
B. How often should you have conversations？ Depending on the size of your team, have at least one or two uninterrupted conversations a month with each team member. Having regular conversations will go a tong way to establish trust and build healthy relationships between you and your team members. These informal meetings typically last half an hour or so. They 'allow you to stay on top of important issues, to be more attuned to the individual's needs and goals and to offer ongoing support. Frequent one-on-one meetings can also help to eliminate any surprises to you or the other person.
C. With so much going on in the workplace, it may be challenging, to concentrate on the issue that needs the most attention. Avoid tangential issues. As a manager, your time is limited, so make the most of it. Being clear about the objective of the conversation will help to keep the discussion on track. Remember what may be an important issue to a team member may be less so to you: however, the individual may need your support working through that issue to focus on more important goals.
D. Keep the discussion focused on the future — what needs to happen and what is likely to happen. This is not the time to get bogged down in what has happened in the past or to review performance history. Instead the conversation should be designed to help the ream member move forward and take action on specific issues that are most relevant. Take a collaborative approach to exploring possibilities.
