Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe

(订阅)to as many as two or three newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?

Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings-battles lost and won, kings or rulers

overthrown(推翻)or killed-took months and even years to travel from one country to another.

The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.

Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful

information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories

and, of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertise- ments makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.

Newspapers often have information on gardening, cooking and fashion as well as a small but

very popular section on jokes and cartoons(漫画).

56. What is the text about?

[A] Advertisements are the most important part in newspapers.

[B ]It introduces newspapers past and today and its contents.

[C] There is a lot of useful information on newspapers.

[D] People like newspapers very much.

Life is difficult.

It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficulties .Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nations. What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their natures, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes endless serious problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yes, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious tests that tell us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to resolve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct. " It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

56. From this passage, it can be inferred that _________ .

[ A] everybody has problems

[ B] we become stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life

[ C ] life is difficult because our problems bring us pain

[ D ] people like to complain about their problems

You can use your Business Telecard International at any card phone in the United Kingdom. Here is some information about making international phone calls.

You can now phone almost any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call big cities. When you cannot make direct dialing calls, you can ask the international operator to

help you. This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else, in this case you should ask for a " person-to-person" call.Even more expensive is a reverse charge call where the person who receives the call pays. If the in-temational line is busy, you can reserve(留下)a call, explain the number you want and the opera-tor will call you back when the line is free.

You can save money by calling outside office hours, for example, early in the morning, late at night, and on Sundays. Remember that the time may be different in the country that you are calling. International time is based on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). London is on GMT and Moscow, for example, is 3 hours ahead. There is one problem: change to DST (Daylight Saving Time) for the summer. In the UK, clocks are put forward one hour in spring and put back in au- tumn, and so London is actually one hour ahead of GMT in the summer.

56. What is the most expensive type of call?

[ A] Direct dial.

[ B ] Through the operator.

[ C ] Reverse charge call.

[ D ] Calling outside office hours.

Sometime in the next century , the familiar early-newspaper on the front gate will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You ' lI get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You 'n even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from communication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events.

Most of the technology is available (哥用的 ) now, but convincing (说服) more people that they don' t need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspaper may be stronger from within journalism.

Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realize that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.

Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens. R might take 30 t0 40 years to complete the changeover because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial(赙经的 ) interests in the paper industry.

56. What is the best title for this passage?

[ A] Computer Newspapers Are Well Liked

[ B ] Newspapers of the Future Will Likely Be on Computer

[ C] Newspapers Are out of Fashion

[ D ] New Communications Technology

We walked so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn ' t even lift her eyes from the book. Mum

pointed to a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to have a seat. While I watched,

mouth open in surprise, mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked

quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop(拖把). She pushed the mop past the

desk and as the nurse looked up, mum nodded and said, "Very dirty floors. "

“Yes. I'm glad they' ve finally decided to clean them," the nurse said. She looked at mum

strangely and said, " But aren ' t you working late?"

Mum just pushed harder, each swipe(拖) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the

hall. I watched until I couldn' t see her and the nurse had turned back to write in the big book:

After a long time mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She rapidly put the mop back and

took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, mum nodded politely to the nurse and said,

" Thank you. "

Outside, mum told me: "Dagmar is fine. No fever. "

"You saw her, mum?"

"Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will

stop worrying as well. It ' s a fine hospital. But such floors ! A mop is no good. You need a brush. "

56. When she took a mop from the small room what mum really wanted to do was ________

Text 1

It's 8:00 am. James Butters gives 18-month-old Thomas his milk, then breakfast. After get-ting Thomas into his outdoor clothes, they head for the park to watch birds and play on the grass. With lunchtime drawing near, they're back home for an aftemoon of drawing, playing with cars, maybe watching some children's programs.

James isn't Thomas' dad. He is a nanny(保姆)-a man nanny, obviously, interestingly

termed a " manny" -specially trained and in his third.nannying position. At 27 , he cares for Thom-

as, and another boy of a similar age. "It's much freer than an office job, " he says, " and you'regetting to see children develop and grow. You become very close to them, for sure. I don't think'm special or better than a woman nanny; everyone has their own method. But I'm unusual.Friends laughed when I started studying nursery nursing. In my class, I was the only man among 70 women. Somehow , I made it, " he said.

Although it's not yet common to find men in traditional(传统的) nannying courses, thingsare changing. In the United States, parents are employing young mannies, sometimes to care forbabies, but more often as active role modelsto get junior away from the TV and the computer. From rollerblading (轮滑) friends to summer swimming mannies, these are the big brothers whoare always willing to play, largely because they're paid for it.

It is catching on here in Britain, too. Earlier this year, Norland nanny college welcomed its firstfull-time man student, 19-year-old Peter Cummins in Wales. While some families find it difficult to accept the idea of a young man in a traditional nannying role , man nannies are increasingly popular.

56. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

[A] Changes in Tradition

[B]A New Job for Men

[C] Mannies and Women Nannies

[D]Baby Boys and Their Mannies

Is staring at a big, white wall during class making you feel dull? If you have ever walked past math teacher Mr. Kelley' s room, you may have noticed how cheerful it is throughout the year. One thing that makes his classroom so much fun is the celebrity (名人) pictures on his front wall. Kelley ' s students have been writing to celebrities from across the nation asking for a photo and a few words of advice. "It really takes a lot of time and money," Kelley said. First, Kelley and his students make a list of all the celebrities to whom they want to write. Once a student picks a star, Kelley looks them up in his book of addresses to see if he can write to that person.

Writing to the stars takes a lot of time because he has personalize each letter, print them out, and address them. In the letter, Kelley asks the celebrity to send his classes a picture with some advice he or she would give to today' s youth.

Kelley takes up a collection in all of his classes and asks each student to contribute (捐) a dollar to pay for the postage. Once Kelley mails off all the letters, the fun really begins. So far he has gotten back about 20 letters and pictures. "The only thing that isn' t cool is when the celebrity sends the picture back with no advice on it, which is my entire purpose in doing this, " said Kelley. When he gets at least three pictures retumed, he lets his classes guess who the three stars are. He keeps score of how many celebrities each class has guessed. Jason Bryant, a student, said, "It' s become a contest (竞赛) between the classes to see who can guess the most stars, and it' s really fun. "

56. What is the text about?

[ A] Celebrities sending photos to Kelley.

[ B ] Celebrities giving advice to students.

三、阅读下列短文 ,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和 D)中 ,选出最佳答案)

"But, monsieur, I cannot give you these tickets," the clerk behind the thick glass window said. "I work for Swiss Railways, and this reservation(订票) is for SNCF(the French national rail line) . " " So where is the SNCF office?" I asked, looking at the clock, which showed we had only10 minutes before the train left. "There isn ' t one in Geneva," he replied. "The only thing I can do is to sell you two new tickets, and I only have smoking compartment(车厢) seats left. " This was getting worse by the minute.

My wife and I had booked and paid for our tickets over the Internet and were now trying to collect them. Nowhere had it warned us that there wasn' t an SNCF ticket office in Geneva. Rather than miss our train, we paid for two more tickets and spent three hours sitting with several people who smoked one cigarette after another between Geneva and Paris. Fortunately, we were able to get our money back for the unused tickets without any difficulty through the customer service office at the Gare de Lyon.

I have to admit at this point that not only do I love France and the French, I also think that their trains are second to none, anywhere in the world. Having said that, the SNCF Internet ticket- buying process(过程) is very French in nature and requires considerable patience. This is where we fell into the " no SNCF office in Geneva" trap(困境) . Once you ' ve figured it out, however, it can work very smoothly and is usually more convenient than buying tickets in the US. This is how you go about it.

56. Where did the writer run into a problem with their ticket reservation?

[ A] ln Paris.

[ B ]In Geneva.

[ C ] In the Gare de Lyon.

[ D] In a city in the United States.
