根据短文回答 23~30 题。

Nice Name but She's so deadly

1 More than a million people in the United States were told to leave their homes over the weekend as Hurricane(飓风)Dennis headed to the Gulf coast。After killing at least 15 people in the Caribbean Sea.

4 So who decides which names are used each year? The World meteorological Organization uses six lists in rotation。SO each list is reused every six years.

根据短文回答 23~30 题。 Global Warming 1 Smoke is clouding our view of global warming

根据短文回答 23~30 题。

Global Warming

1 Smoke is clouding our view of global warming, protecting the planet from perhaps three-quarters of the greenhouse (温室) effect. That might sound like good news, but experts say that as the cover diminishes in coming decades, we are. facing a dramatic increase of warming that could be two or even three times as great as official best guesses.

2 This was the dramatic conclusion reached last week at a workshop in Dahlem, Berlin, where top atmospheric scientists got together, including Nobel Prize winner Paul Crutzen and Swedish scientist Bert Bolin, former chairman of the UN's Intergovemmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

3 IPCC scientists have suspected for a decade that aerosols (浮质) of smoke and other particles from burning rainforest, crop waste and fossil fuels are blocking sunlight and counteracting the warming effect of carbon dioxide (二氧化物) emissions. Until now, they reckoned that aerosols reduced greenhouse warming by perhaps a quarter, cutting increases by 0.2~C. So the 0.6~C of warming over the past century would have been 0.8~C without aerosols.

4 But the Berlin workshop concluded that the real figure is even higher--aerosols may have reduced global warming by as much as three-quarters, cutting increases by 1.8~C. If so, the good news is that aerosols have prevented the world getting almost two degrees warmer than it is now. But the bad news is that the climate system is much more sensitive to greenhouse gases than previously guessed.

5 As those gases are expected to continue accumulating in the atmosphere while aerosols stabilize or fall, that means "dramatic consequences for estimates of future climate change", the scientists agreed in a draft report from the workshop.

A.Atmospheric Scientists

B.The Calculations Made at the Berlin Workshop

C.The Previous Calculations of the Effect of Aerosols

D.The Scientists'Agreement

E.The Authoritative Conclusion

根据短文回答 23~30 题。

Estee Lauder Died

1 The child of Central European immigrants who created an international cosmetics ?(化妆品) empire and became one of the most influential women in US, has died on Saturday. Estee Lauder died at her home in Manhattan, New York City, a company spokeswoman said. She was 97.

2 Born in Queens, New York in 1908, Lauder was the daughter of a Hungarian mother and a Czech father.

3 Lauder began her business career by selling skincare products developed by her uncle John Schotz, a chemist, to beauty salons (美容院) and hotels. In 1930, she married Joseph Lauder who became her partner. The company, which became known as Estee Lauder, took off after World War Ⅱ.

4? In 1953, the company introduced its first perfume (香水), Youth Dew, the first of a range of fragrances that has now grown to more than 70. They include: Aramis, a line of products for men, launched in 1964; and Clinique, a range of odourless (无嗅的) cosmetics, which followed in 1968.

5 By the time she retired in 1995, Lauder was presiding over a multibillion-dollar enterprise, which now ranks number 349 in the Fortune 500 list of largest US companies. In 1998, she was the only woman to feature in Time magazine's selection of the 20 most important business geniuses of the last century. There were two secrets to her success: her gift for selling things and her tireless energy and determination never to accept second best.

6 Even after her retirement at the age of 89, Lauder remained closely involved. Beauty, Lauder believed, was the most important thing in life.

7 She wrote in her 1985 autobiography, "Estee, a Success Story": "In a perfect world, we'd all be judged on the sweetness of our souls, But in our less than perfect world, the woman who looks pretty has a distinct advantage and, usually, the last word."

根据短文回答 23~30 题。

Science Fiction

1 Amongst the most popular books being written today are those which are usually Classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been based on science fiction stories.

2 It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were concerned with the presentation of some form. of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories.

3 Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated into many languages.

4? Modern science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars (火星) or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection of the world which we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones (涵义).

5? In an age where science fact frequently overtakes (超过) science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently Clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology.

A.Popularity of Science Fiction

B.A Fairly New Development

根据短文回答 23~30 题。

Robots

1 The most sophisticated (先进的) Japanese robots, which have vision systems and work at very high speeds, are still based on American designs. Studios of robots particularly computer control software, are considered to be generally less advanced in Japan than in America or Europe.

2 Although industrial robots were originally developed as devices for simply handling objects, today their commonest uses are for more skilled work like welding (焊接),spray, painting and assembling components.

3 In Britain, robot sales appropriately peaked in 1984, but have been declining ever since. This is partly because British wage rates are too low to make robots financially attractive and partly because engineers now have more experience with robots and are more aware of the difficulties of introducing them effectively.

4 It has been calculated that a robot uses on average about 100 times more energy than a human to do an equivalent job.

5 It is estimated that 20% of all comic book heroes in Japan are robots. This is an enormous number because comics are so popular that they make up a third of all material published in Japan.

6 The reliability of robots is measured in their M.T.B.F. or mean time between failures. This has risen from about 250 hours in the mid-1970s to about 10,000 hours today (equivalent to working 18 hours a day for two years). One way robot manufacturers have increased reliability is to test every single component they buy, instead of the normal procedure of just testing a small sample.

7 The biggest single benefit of introducing robots claimed by Japanese companies is that they increase quality control. Once programmed, the robots can work more accurately and consistently than humans, who can get tired and bored.

第 23 题 Paragraph 2_______

A.Ongoing Research

B.Extension of Use

C.Robot Heroes

D.Greater Reliability

E.Falling Demand

F.Hidden Danger
