Kobe Bryant

After 10 seasons wearing the No 8 on his back,Kobe Bryant will become No 24 next season. The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot topic for debate.

Bryant wore No 24 when he was in early high school, but he changed to No 33 in his senior year.He switched to No 8 when he was selected by the Lakers in 1996,and has not been changed since.

Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs(季后赛).So guessing Bryant's motive has become a popular game among NBA fans and newspaper columnists(专栏作家).

There are all kinds of speculations. Many say that Bryant wants to leave the past behind and have a fresh start. He has often been criticized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole.Others say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jordan.Jordan was famous for his No 23 jersey(运动衫).Some, such as NBC Sport columnist Michael Ventre, argue that it is"all about money".Bryant will make more money by selling new jerseys to his fans.

Some speculations are more about fun.For example, there is an opinion that Kobe is actually just a diehard(非常执著的)fan of the popular TV drama "24".

All this talk has turned the number change into a major issue. It seems that there is a lot of fuss(大惊小怪)over something that should be pretty simple.

Jersey numbers have their own special significance in American sports, especially basketball.Players choose their number when they join a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of their career. When a great player retires, his team will honor him by retiring his number.

第二篇 Late-night Drinking

Coffee lovers, be careful. Having a quick"pick-me-up" cup of coffee late in the day will interrupt your sleep. As well as being a stimulant(剂 ), caffeine interrupts the flow of melatonin(褪黑激素) ,the brain hormone that sends people into a sleep.

Melatonin levels normally start to riseabout two hours before bedtime. Levels then peak between 2 am and 4 am, before falling again. "It's theneurohormone (神经激素) thatcontrols our sleep and tells our body when to sleep and when to wake,"says Maurice Ohayon of the Stanford Sleep Epidemi-ology Research Centerat Stanford University in California. But researchers inIsraelhavefound thatcaffeinated coffee halves the body's levels of this sleep hormone.

Lotan Shilo and a team at the SapirMedical Center in Tel Aviv University found that six volun-teers slept less well after a cup of caffeinated coffeethan after drinking the same amount of decaf (脱咖啡因咖啡). On average, subjects slept 336 minutes per night after drinkingcaffeinated coffee, com-pared with 415 minutes after decaf. They also took halfan hour to drop off, twice as long as usual

In the second phase of the experiment, the researchers woke the volunteers every three hours andasked them to give aurine (尿) sample. Shilo measured concentrations of abreakdown product of me-latonin. The results suggest that melatoninconcentrations in caffeine drinkers were half those in decafdrinkers. In apaper accepted for publication in Sleep Medicine, the researchers suggest thatcaffeineblocks production of the enzyme(酶)that drives melatonin production.

Because it can take many hours toeliminate caffeine from the body. Ohayon recommends that cof-fee lovers switchto decaf after lunch.

The author mentions"pick-me-up" to indicate that

A.melatonin levels need to be raised.

B.coffee is a stimulant.

C.neurohormone can wake us up.

D.caffeine can balance our brain hormone.

第二篇 Brain-dead Mother Dies after Giving Birth

A brain-dead woman who was kept alive for three months so she could deliver the child she was carrying was removed from life support on Wednesday and died, a day after giving birth.

"This is obviously a bittersweet time for our family," Justin Tortes, the woman's brother-in-law, said in a statement.

Susan Tortes, a cancer-stricken, 26-year-old researcher at the National Institutes of Health, suffered a stroke in May after the melanoma (黑瘤) spread to her brain.

Her family decided to keep her alive to give her foetus (胎儿) a chance. It became a race between the foetus' development and the cancer that was destroying the woman's body.

Doctors said that Tortes' health was getting worse and that the risk of harm to the foetus finally outweighed the benefits of extending the pregnancy.

Tortes gave birth to a daughter by Caesarean section (剖腹产手术) on Tuesday at Virginia Hospital Center. The baby was two months premature and weighed about a kilogram. She was in the newborn intensive care unit.

Dr Donna Tilden-Archer, the hospital's director of neonatology (新生儿学), described the child as "very vigorous." She said the baby had responded when she received stimulation, indicating she was healthy.

Doctors removed Tortes from life support early Wednesday with the consent of her husband, Jason Tortes, after she received the final sacrament (圣礼) of the Roman Catholic Church.

"We thank all of those who prayed and provided support for Susan, the baby and our family," Jason Tortes said in a statement. "We especially thank God for giving us little Susan. My wife's courage will never be forgotten."

English-language medical literature contains at least 11 cases since 1979 of

irreversibly brain-damaged women whose lives were prolonged for the benefit of the developing foetus, according to the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Dr Christopher McManus, who coordinated care for Susan Tortes, put the infant's chances of developing cancer at less than 25 per cent. He said 19 women who have had the same aggressive form. of melanoma as Tortes have given birth, and five of their babies became ill with the disease.

第 35 题 Susan Torres died soon after

A. she suffered a stroke.

B. she became brain-dead.

C. she was diagnosed with cancer.

第二篇 Mother Knows Best?

Once while being prepped (准备) for a television interview, I was chatting with the host about stay-at-home fathers. I made the point that one reason we're seeing more stay-at-home dads may be that it's no longer a given (假定的事实) that a man makes more money than his wife. Many families now take earning power into account when deciding which parent will stay home.

At that point, one of the male crew members commented, almost to himself but loud enough for my benefit, "It should be the better parent who stays home." A lot of guys say things like that. Usually it's a code for, "My wife, (read: any woman) is the better parent."

I was a stay-at-home father for eight years, so his declaration made me bristle (激动). It implied that our family's choice could only have been correct if I was a "better" parent than my wife.

I suppose an argument could have been made that when I began staying home my wife was the "better" parent: She I-Dad spent more time with Ry, could read him better and calm him more quickly. And given a choice, he'd have picked her over me. But as she was the more employable one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son.

Because of the increased time I spent with him, I soon knew Ry well, understood what he needed and could look after him more or less as well as my wife could. Actually, the experience helped me unlock one of the world's great secrets: Women are good at looking after children because they do it. It's not because of any innate (先天的) female aptitude (天资) or a mother's instinct. It's because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job.

Women obviously get a biological head start from giving birth and nursing, but over the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself, I was good, too. As good? I don't know. Who cares? Children are not made of glass. Other people are capable of looking after them besides Morn.

36 Which of the following does the first paragraph imply?

A Men like staying at home.

B The author works at a TV station.

C In more and more families the wife is earning more than the husband

D The husband is the better parent.
