听力原文: In today's class we'll be examining some nineteenth-century pattern books that were used for building houses. I think it's fair today that these pattern books were the most important influence on the design of North American houses during the nineteenth century.

This was because most people who wanted to build a house couldn't afford to hire an architect. Instead, they bought a pattern book, picked out a plan, and took it to the builder. The difference in cost was substantial. In 1870, for example, hiring an architect would have cost about a hundred dollars. At the same time, a pattern book written by an architect cost only five dollars.

At that price, it's easy to see why pattern books were so popular. Some are back in print again today, and of course they cost a lot more than they did a hundred years ago. But they're an invaluable resource for historians, and also for people who restore old houses. I have a modern reprint here that I’ll be passing around the room in a moment so that everyone can have a look.

(36)

A.Advice about landscaping.

B.Hints about saving to buy a house.

C.Photographs of the homes of famous people.

D.Plans for houses.

听力原文: I am delighted to see that we have such a full house for this afternoon's lecture. I can see by the overwhelming attendance that today's topic and the new exhibit are of interest to many in our community. The photographs, which are on loan from a number of local businesses and private collectors, trace the history of the area from its beginning as a small stop on a nineteenth-century railway line to its current status as a modern city. And that is what we have asked historian and storyteller Marc Wise to share with us today.

What does the speaker imply about the audience?

A.More guests are present than were expected.

B.Most of the guests are businesspeople.

C.Only historians will understand the talk.

D.Most of the guests arrived on time.

e what people used to enjoy reading. Did you see this old book of children's stories?

M: Some of these books aren't so old, though. See? This novel was published only six years ago. It cost seventy-five cents.

W: Hey! Look at this!

M: What? Are you getting interested in nineteenth-century plays all of a sudden?

W: No. Look at the signature. Someone gave this book as a present, and wrote a note on the inside of the front cover. It's dated 1856. Maybe it's worth something.

M: Everything on that shelf is worth fifty cents.

W: But if this is the signature of someone who is well-known, it might bring a lot more. I hear William Shakespeare's signature is worth about a million dollars.

M: Oh? I can hardly read what the one says. Who wrote it?

W: The name looks like "Harold Dickinson". Wasn't he a politician or something? I'm going to buy this book and see if I can find a name like that in the library.

M: Good luck. Your book of plays may make you rich, but I'll bet my seventy-five cents novel is a better buy.

Where is this conversation taking place?

A.In a classroom.

B.In a library.

C.At a secondhand bookstore.

D.In a museum.
