What Is the Coolest Gas in the Universe?

What is the coldest air temperature ever recorded on Earth? Where was this low temperature recorded? The coldest recorded temperature on Earth was -90℃, which __________ (51) in Antarctica (南极洲 ) in 1983.<br>

We encounter an interesting situation when we discuss temperatures in __________ (52).<br>

Temperatures in Earth orbit (轨道) actually range from about + 120℃ to -120℃. The temperature depends upon __________ (53) you are in direct sunlight or in shade. Obviously, -120℃ is colder than our body can __________ (54) endure.<br>

The space temperatures just discussed affect only our area of the solar __________ (55).Obviously, it is hotter closer to the Sun and colder as we travel __________ (56) from the Sun.<br>

Scientists estimate temperatures at Pluto are about -210℃. How cold is the lowest estimated temperature in the entire universe? Again, it depends upon your __________ (57). We are taught it is supposedly __________ (58) to have a temperature below absolute zero, which is -273℃, at which atoms do not move. Two scientists, Cornell and Wieman, have successfully __________ (59)down a gas to a temperature barely above absolute zero. They won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 for their work--not a discovery, in this case.<br>

Why is the two scientists&39; work so important to science?<br>

In the 1920s, Satyendra Nath Bose was studying an interesting __________ (60) about special light particles (微粒) we now call photons (光子). Bose had trouble __________ (61) other scientists to believe his theory, so he contacted Albert Einstein. Einstein&39;s calculations helped him theorize that atoms __________ (62) behave as Bose thought--but only at very cold temperatures.<br>

Scientists have also discovered that ultra-cold (超冷) atoms can help them make the world&39;s atomic clocks even __________ (63) accurate. These clocks are so accurate today they would only lose one second __________ (64) six million years! Such accuracy will help us travel in space because distance is velocity (速度) times time (d=υt). With the long distances involved in space__________ (65), we need to know time as accurately as possible to get accurate distance.<

Sleepless at Night

It was a normal summer night. Humidity (湿气) hung in the thick air. I couldn&39;t go to sleep, partly because of my cold and partly because of my expectations for the next day. My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a surprise.<br>

Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, I gathered enough strength to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright moon hanging in the sky, giving off a magic light.<br>

I couldn&39;t stand the pressure anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel better. I went to the bathroom and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. I cleaned my teeth as if there was no tomorrow. Back and forth, up and down.<br>

Then I walked downstairs to look for some signs of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat frightened me as he meowed (喵喵地唱出) his sad song. He was on the old orange couch (长沙发) , sitting up on his front legs, waiting for something to happen. He looked at me as if to show "I&39;m lonely, pet me. I need a good hug (紧抱) ." Even the couch begged me to sit on it.<br>

In one movement I settled down onto the soft couch. This couch represented my parents&39;<br>

marriage, my birth, and hundreds of other little events.<br>

As ! held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was flooded with questions:<br>

What&39;s life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator&39;s body, I had a new thought; each touch sang a different song.<br>

I forgot all about the heat and the next day&39;s surprise. The atmosphere was so full of warmth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries slowly move away.

The author of the passage could not go to sleep partly because ___________. 查看材料

Travel Across Africa

For six hours we shot through the barren (荒芜的) landscape of the Karoo desert in South Africa. Just rocks and sand and baking sun. Knowing our journey was ending, Daniel and 1 just wanted to remember all we had seen and done. He used a camera. I used words. I had already finished three notebooks and was into the fourth, a beautiful leather notebook I&39;d bought in a market in Mozambique.<br>

Southern Africa was full of stories and visions. We were almost drunk on sensations. The roaring of the water at Victoria Falls, the impossible silence of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.<br>

And then the other things: dogs in the streets, whole families in Soweto living in one room, a kilometer from clean water.<br>

As we drove towards the setting sun, a quietness fell over us. The road was empty--we hadn&39;t seen another car for hours. And as I drove, something caught my eye, something moving close enough to touch them, to smell their hot breath. I didn&39;t know how long they had been there next to us.<br>

I shouted to Dan: "Look! but he was in a deep sleep, his camera lying useless by his feet."<br>

They raced the car for a few seconds, then disappeared far behind us, a memory of heroic forms in the red landscape.<br>

When Daniel woke up an hour later I told him what had happened.<br>

"Wild horses? "he said. "Why didn&39;t you wake me up, Sophia?"<br>

"I tried. But they were gone after a few seconds."<br>

"Are you sure you didn&39;t dream it?"<br>

"You were the one who was sleeping! "<br>

"Typical," he said. "The best photos are the ones we never take."<br>

We checked into a dusty hotel and slept the sleep of the dead.

Daniel and Sophia drove slowly through the busy desert. 查看材料

请根据短文的内容,回答题。

The Need to Remember

Some people say they have no memory at all: "I just can&39;t remember a thing!" But of course we all have a memory. Our memory tells us who we are. Our memory helps us to make use in the present of what we have learnt in the past.

In fact we have different types of memory. For example, our visual memory helps us recall facts and places. Some people have such a strong visual memory, they can remember exactly what they have seen, for example, pages of a book, as a complete picture.

Our verbal (言语的 ) memory helps us remember words and figures we may have heard but not seen or written: items of a shopping list, a chemical formula, dates, or a recipe.

With our emotional memory, we recall situations or places where we had strong feelings, perhaps of happiness or unhappiness. We also have special memories for smell, taste, touch and sound, and for performing physical movements.

We have two ways of storing any of these memories: our short-term memory stores items for up to thirty seconds- enough to remember a telephone number while we dial. Our long-term memory, on the other hand, may store items for a lifetime. Older people in fact have a much better long-term memory than short-term. They may forget what they have done only a few hours ago, but have the clearest remembrance (记忆) of when they were very young.

Psychologists tell us that we only remember a few facts about our past, and that we invent the rest. It is as though we remember only the outline of a story. We then make up the details. We often do this in the way we want to remember them, usually so that we appear as the heroes of our own past-- or maybe victims needing sympathy (同情 ).

Visual memory helps us recall a place we have been to. 查看材料

Something Men Do Not Like to Do

Eric Brown hates shopping. "It&39;s just not enjoyable to me," said the 28-year-old Chicago man who was carrying several shopping bags along the city&39;s main street, Michigan Avenue. "When I&39;m out__________(1), I basically know what I want to get. I rush in. I buy it. I __________ (2). "

Common wisdom says that guys hate to Shop. You can ask generations of men. But people who study shopping say that a number of social, cultural and economic factors are now__________(3) this "men-hate-to-shop" notion.

" __________ (4) social class, ethnicity, age, men say they hate to shop," says Sharon Zukin, a City University of New York sociology professor. "Yet when you ask them deeper questions, it turns out that they __________ (5) to shop. Men generally like to shop for __________ .(6), music and hardware. But if you ask them about the shopping they do for books or music, they&39;ll say "Well, that&39;s not shopping. That&39;s __________ (7)."

In other words, what men and women call "buying things" and how they approach that task are __________ (8).

Women will__________(9) through several 1,000-square-metre stores in search of the perfect party dress. Men will wander through 100 Intemet sites in search of the__________(10)digital camcorder.

Women see shopping as a social event. Men see it as a mission or a__________(11) to be won.

"Men are frequently shopping to win," says Mary Ann McGrath, a marketing professor at Loyola University of Chicago. "They want to get the best deal. They want to get the best one. The last one and if they do that it__________(12) them happy."

When women shop, "they&39;re doing it in a way where they want__________(13) to be very happy," says McGrath. "They&39;re kind of shopping for love."

In fact, it is in clothing where we see a male-female__________(14) most clearly. Why,grumble some men, are all male clothes navy, grey, black or brown? But would they wear Light green and pink?

These days, many guys wear a sort of "uniform", says Paco Underhill, author of "Why We Buy", "It&39;s been hard for them to understand what it means to be fashion-conscious in a business way. It becomes much, much easier if you (15) your range of choices."

根据下面短文内容,回答题。

His Own Way to Express Love

Yesterday was our three-year anniversary. We didn&39;t do anything romantic; we just walked hand in hand and talked about our past and the future. This was pretty much what I had expected.

Andy is an unromantic guy: no sweet words or roses. Smart as he is, he is a little bit shy expressing his love. In contrast, I am an outspoken (直言不讳) girl who likes to show her feelings directly. So needless to say, I often feel that he is insensitive. I envy other girls who are surrounded by sweet words.

I was in this sullen mood until I heard a beautiful sentence one day: "If one does not love you the-way you like, it does not mean that he does not love you." This simple but sensible sentence made me think about our happy days and recall his deep concern for me.

One cold winter night, I got a high fever. He hurried to my dormitory and took me to the hospital. He was in such a hurry that he even forgot to wear socks. After arrival, he ran through the hospital handling all the formalities (手续).When I was put on a drip (点滴), he told me interesting stories to make me happy. Being held in his warm arms and listening to his tender (温柔的) voice,I had never felt so safe and comfortable. Gradually, I fell asleep. When I woke up 15 minutes later,he was still mumbling (咕哝地说) to me. He explained that if he had stopped talking I would have woken up. At that moment, I found love in his eyes.

Another time, I had a bad quarrel with my best friend. Although I knew it was my fault, I refused to admit it. I was very angry when he insisted I apologize to her. He said that it was difficult to admit a mistake, but this was what everyone should do. The next morning, I apologized to my friend and asked for her forgiveness.

My unromantic boyfriend cares about my health like my father, understands me like my mother and helps me like my elder brother.

Who is Andy? 查看材料

B.The writer"s uncle.

根据下面短文内容,回答题。

Interview with Allan Gray

(1)I was working for a multinational company in the early 1980s, and my brother asked me if I was interested in going into partnership with him to set up a language school. I&39;d always wanted to work for myself, and I was a bit fed up with working for someone else, so I said yes.

Primarily, I wanted the freedom to make my own decisions, I wanted room to be creative, and also I wanted to be able to get the credit and keep the profits if we were successful. I was also happy to carry the can and take the blame if things went wrong. These things are not possible if you work as an employee in a large organization.

(2) I had to borrow money to help start the business, but we were lucky because we also had some outside capital to put into the business. These days it can be really hard to persuade banks to lend money to people who want to start a company, so we were fortunate. It was fairly easy to set up the business, because we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to do. The problem was, all our preconceptions (预想 ) about what it would be like to run a business were wrong.

We made lots of mistakes, and we almost went bankrupt (破产的 ) at the beginning. At one point, we only had two students in the school.

(3) Far too long! We lost money for the first four years and, as I was saying, we nearly went out of business. It took quite a long time to start making profit. The best thing we did, though, was that we hired some really good people to work for us. In fact, some of those people are still working for us,24 years later. Now we&39;re doing well, but it was very risky at first.

(4) One is financial constraint (约束) , It can be very tough. Think all small businesses have cash flow problems -- it often takes a long time to get paid by your customers. The second big problem is marketing. It takes a lot of funds to market your business, and you have to get your name known and build a reputation. But the biggest challenge is managing the people. All businesses are about people, and you have to learn how to deal with all kinds of people – and I think we&39;ve been extremely good at getting the best of our staff.

Paragraph 1 __________ 查看材料

A.Strategies in expanding a small business

B.Right people to run a business

C.Time-consuming experience of being successful

D.Challenges of running a business

E.Difficulties in starting the business

F.Reasons for working for oneself
