Unlocking the Human Genome(基因组)

1 A project to unlock secrets-what scientist could resist that challenge? This is what many scientists are doing as they work on the Human Genome Project. The aim of the project is to decode(破译)all of the some 100, 000 genes in the human body. Scientists are using DNA fingerprinting techniques to do the decoding.

2 DNA is the substance found in the chromosomes(染色体)of a cell. A chromosome is a chain of genes. Each gene carries a piece of genetic information. At any one moment in a cell, thousands of genes are turned on and off to produce proteins(蛋白质). The challenge for scientists is to find out what role each gene plays in protein production. At some point this decoding will be complete. Then scientists will have a map of an ideal genome, or a picture of the total genetic nature of a human being. The ideal genome is called a consensus(交感)genome. Everything works well in a consensus genome.

3 But no one in the world has a consensus genome. Everyone's genome is different from the ideal. These differences are referred to as genetic mutations(突变). Genetic mutations in a person's genome mean that the person has a greater than average chance of suffering from health problems. Some problems are not life-threatening. These would include things like colorblindness, or mild headaches. Other problems are serious, such as heart disease, or cancer.

4 It will take years to identify the role of each of the 100, 000 genes, The short-term goal of the project is to find the physical and mental health problems a person is likely to encounter during his or her lifetime. The long-term goal is to have each person live a longer, healthier life.

A. How does DNA work?

B. What is the Human Genome Project about?

C. How are the DNA samples collected?

D. What are the goals of the Human Genome Project?

E. What is the role of each gene?

F. What are the consequences of genetic mutations?

听力原文:Did you know that vegetables can be tricked into growing in climates they are not

听力原文: Did you know that vegetables can be tricked into growing in climates they are not accustomed to? Cool climate vegetables like asparagus are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. In Hawaii marine engineers have been able to actually convince such vegetables that they're in cooler climates. That way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is very simply cold water. How do they use it? They place pipes in the soil and the cold water flows in through and then cools the air. This stimulates plant growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates. Also some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they condense moisture and thus irrigate the garden. What's especially appealing about this process is that nothing damaging to the environment is being used. Another innovative use for cold ocean water is to cool buildings. Engineers believe that, for example, the entire western coast of the United States could be air-conditioned using seawater. We'll be back to discuss that possibility after this commercial message.

(26)

A.Irrigating desert areas.

B.Use for cold seawater.

C.Techniques for preserving the environment.

D.The importance of conserving energy.

Although there is considerable debate over how severe the greenhouse effect will be, one t
hing seems certain: carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) levels are on the rise. Measurements at the federal atmospheric observatory on Manna Loa volcano in Hawaii show that the concentration of the gas in the atmosphere has risen steadily from 315 parts per million in 1958 to 340 parts per million today.

The event offender, scientists conclude, is the burning of coal, oil, synthetic fuels, and natural gas. These carbon-rich fossil (从地下采掘的) energy sources release an estimated five and a half billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere each year as colorless, odorless (无味的) CO2 gas.

The increased carbon dioxide is probably not a threat to health, since normal indoor levels of the gas can run 1000 parts per million or higher without apparent harm. But it could deeply affect the way the earth is heated by the sun. The sun's energy strikes the earth principally in the form. of visible light. As the earth heats up, it radiates this energy back into space, but at the much longer wavelengths of infra- red (红外线的) light, or heat. Carbon dioxide lets the visible light pass through, but absorbs energy at infra-red wavelengths. Thus, the more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the more the earth's heat is blocked from escaping --just as a blanket holds in the heat of a sleeper's body.

Some scientists think the greenhouse effect already has begun: average global temperatures have risen about one degree Fahrenheit in the past 90 years. Others argue that the rise could be due to the irregular change of natural temperature.

People have different opinions about ______.

A.why the concentration of gas is rising steadily

B.to what degree the greenhouse effect can affect us

C.whether CO2 has anything to do with the greenhouse effect

D.what measures should be taken to lower the carbon dioxide levels

Oahu Shark Adventure

www.oahusharkadventure.com

Brendan,

I think I found the perfect activity for Mr. Mendoza when he's visiting the Honolulu offices next month. Check out this Web site: www.oahusharkadventure.com

This might seem a little extreme, but we all know how much Mr. Mendoza loves the ocean and scuba diving. We bring him scuba diving on every trip he takes out here. But I also know that he's fascinated by sharks. The last time he was in Hawaii he was reading a book about them and would bring them up in conversation every chance he had. So I think this would be perfect for him — something different but something he would enjoy very much.

My brother-in-law went on a shark adventure through Oahu Shark Adventure when my sister and her family came to visit me last summer. He said it was very safe, very well organized, and an experience that he will never forget.

So what do you think? Perhaps we can discuss the idea with the whole team on Thursday. We can find out if we have any volunteers to go on a shark-viewing adventure with Mr. Mendoza — if we're all in agreement that it's a good idea.

you get all of this stuff?

W: I bought it. So,what do you think of my new entertainment center? And the Widescreen TV…

M: Bought it?

W: …and my new DVD player. Here, let me show you my stereo. You can really rock the house with this one.

M: But where did you get the dough to buy all these? You didn't borrow money from morn and dad again, did you?

W: of course not. I got it with this!

M: This?Let me see that…Have you been using dad's credit card again?

W: No,silly. It's mine. It's a student credit card.

M: A student credit card? How in the world did you get one of these?

W: I got an application in the mail.

M: Well, why did you get one in the first place?

W: Listen. Times are changing, and having a credit card helps you build a credit rating, control spending, and even buy things that you can't pay with cash…like the plane ticket I got recently.

M: What plane ticket?

W: Oh yeah,my roommate and I are going to Hawaii over the school break, and of course,I need some new clothes for that so……

M: I don't want to hear it. How does a student credit card control spending? It sounds you've spent yourself in a hole. Anyway, student credit cards just 1ead to impulse spending…as I can see here. And the interest rates of student credit cards are usually sky-high,and if you miss a payment, the rates, well, just jump!

W: Ah. The credit card has a credit limit…

M: …of $20,000?

W: No,not quite that high. Anyway,…

M: I've heard enough.

W: Did I tell you we now get digital cable with over 100 channels?Oh,and here's your birthday present. A new MP3 player…

M: Yeah. Oh,don't tell me. Charged on the credit card. Listen. Hey,I don't think having a student credit card is a bad idea, but this is ridiculous. And how in the world are you going to pay off your credit card bill?

W: Um,with my birthday money? It's coming up in a week.

M: Hey,let's sit down and talk about how you're going to pay things back, and maybe we can come up with a budget that will help you get out of this mess. That's the least I can do.

Hawaii Hawaii’s native minority is demanding a greater degree of sovereignty over its own

Hawaii

Hawaii’s native minority is demanding a greater degree of sovereignty over its own affairs. But much of the archipelago’s political establishment, which includes the White Americans who dominated until the Second World War and people of Japanese, Chinese and Filipino origin, is opposed to the idea.

The islands were annexed by the US in 1898 and since then Hawaii’s native peoples have fared worse than any of its other ethnic groups. They make up over 60 percent of the state’s homeless, suffer levels of unemployment and their life span is five years less than the average Hawaiians. They are the only major US native group without some degree of autonomy.

But a sovereignty advisory committee set up by Hawaii’s first native governor, John Waihee, has given the natives’ cause a major boost be recommending that the Hawaiian natives decide by themselves whether to re-establish a sovereign Hawaiian nation.

However, the Hawaiian natives are not united in their demands. Some just want greater autonomy with the state—as enjoyed by many American Indian natives over matters such as education. This is a position supported by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), a state agency set up in 1978 to represent to natives’ interests and which has now become the moderate face of the native sovereignty movement. More ambitious in the Ka Lahui group, which declared itself a new nation in 1987 and wants full, official independence from the US.

But if Hawaiian natives are given greater autonomy, it is far from clear how many people this will apply to. The state authorities only count as native those people with more than 50 percent Hawaiian blood.

Native demands are not just based on political grievances, though. They also want their claim on 660,000 hectares of Hawaiian crown land to be accepted. It is on this issue that native groups are facing most opposition from the state authorities. In 1933, the state government paid the OHA US $136 million in back rent on the crown land and many officials say that by accepting this payment the agency has given up its claims to legally own the land. The OHA has vigorously disputed this.

Hawaii’s native minority refers to______.

A.people of Filipino origin

B.the Ka Lahui group

C.people with 50% Hawaiian blood

D.Hawaii’s ethnic groups
