听力原文:W: I've just been reading an article on biotherapy.

M: Biotherapy? What's that?

W: Well, it's an alternative health system based on the concept that energy is transmitted from one human being to another in order to heal psychologically or physically through regeneration.

M: Say that again, in English.

W: Well, I'll put it this way. A trained practitioner touches the patient in order to help the healing process.

M: Oh, I see. What kinds of things do they cure?

W: A variety of conditions and illnesses. According to the article, biotherapy can help people to lose weight, stop headaches, make ageing skin look youthful again, treat depression, even cure cancer.

M: Cure cancer? That's pretty ambitious claim. So how does the treatment work?

W: It expels negative energy from the organism.

M: I don't think that such a confusing explanation would stop me from taking proper medicine if I were un- lucky enough to be ill.

W: No, well, that's the beauty of it. You can have conventional medicine together with biotherapy. Fancy going for a bio-energetic check up?

M: Well, I'm not so sure about that. Supposing you book an appointment and I come with you first, just to see?

?Read the article below about employee participation and family-friendly working.

?For each question 31—40, write one word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

SOME studies which have examined the business consequences of implementing family-friendly employment policies have found benefits in doing so. Others have tried to determine whether employees have a voice (31) work-life issues, and how instrumental it might be in establishing family-friendly employment policies.

Employees appear (32) have a voice of some kind in larger organizations. It tends (33) be collective, and expressed through trade unions or staff associations. Smaller enterprises typically lack collective means of expression, though there can be direct communication (34) individual employees and their employers over flexible working. Some studies have reported individuals negotiating informal arrangements (35) their managers in small and medium-sized enterprises to suit their individual circumstances, but not all employees have a powerful enough voice to achieve this.

Family-friendly policies appear to be more widespread and deeply embedded (36)enterprises which recognize unions, though this association does not imply that unions have a more effective voice. Various studies have confirmed the low-key role of trade unions. Consultation even with and among line managers also appears to be rather restricted, (37) the possible exception of health services, (38) there is an organisational cultural tradition of consultation.

However, the major factor influencing employers (39) implement or extend family-friendly policies appears not to be collective or individual employee pressures, (40) labour-market conditions backed by minimal statutory requirements.

Welcome to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city of many faces. It is the capital of the Netherlands, even though it is not the seat of Parliament or the government. Amsterdam is more than just a capital however. It is the essence of the Netherlands: not just because it is the largest city in the country, but more particularly because it is the mainspring of our country's economic, social and cultural life.

Already more than seven hundred years old, our compact city has more of which it can be proud: world-class orchestras and dance groups, more than fourty renowned museums, almost a thousand restaurants serving cuisine from countries around the globe, gabled mansions and magnificent churches from the 17th century Golden Age.

But, as Amsterdammers, we are most proud of our tradition of hospitality. We really want every one to feel at home. You will find this friendliness and helpfulness everywhere: at the VVVTourist Office, in our hotels and restaurants, at our colourful sheet markets and distinctive Haute Couture shops, in our brown cafes and nightclubs.

Whether you are a business executive or a tourist, you will find people here eager to talk with you usually in your own language. Multilingualism is another feature in which the Dutch take pride.

Read the article below about a website. Are sentences 1-7 on the opposite page Right or Wrong? If there is not enough information to answer Right or Wrong, choose Doesnt Say. For each sentence 1-7, mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet. Here we Google again Google dominates the Internet-search business, such as Netscape once ruled in Web browsers and RealNetworks did in media players. Begun as a research project by two graduate students in 1998, Google today carries out more than 200 million searches a day and is estimated to have had $1 billion income last year, mainly from advertising sector. It is the most visited search site, accounting for 35% of search-engine visits — compared with 28% for Yahoo, 16% for AOL and 15% for Microsofts MSN, according to comScore Networks, a market-research company. But that masks its true influence. Googles technology is used to power searches on other sites, such as Yahoo and AOL (though Yahoo plans to use its own technology soon). Taking this into account makes Google responsible for around 80% of all Internet searches. The company is now preparing for a stock market flotation in the next few months. Googles power makes it just the sort of company that Microsoft typically tries to squash. At the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Mr Gates admitted that Googles search technology was "way better" than Microsofts, and identified Internet search as a key focus for his company.

Google, Netscape and RealNetworks all play a very important role in their own field.
