Victoria is well on her way to becoming a good reader, which could make all the difference in the world to her future. Decades of research demonstrate that enjoying reading and reading well are the biggest factors in a child's school success. Good readers make great students. They score higher on achievement tests in every year, in all subjects, including maths and science. So what are the secrets of giving your children an academic edge as well as lifelong pleasure?

1. Good readers start out ahead.

Reading scores in Year One are a key indicator of school success in Year Eleven. What hap pens in the very early years has a lasting effect on learning. So try these tips with young children:

The more you read, talk and sing to babies, the greater their foundation for vocabulary and understanding. The youngest ones are amazingly receptive to language.

Toddlers(初学走路的孩子)will sit still to interact with books if you arouse their interest with questions like "Who's that?" and "What else do you see?"

Preschool is the time for children to begin to learn the alphabet, and to become aware of the sounds that make up words--a crucial skill for reading known as phonemic awareness(音位意识). They don't call it that, but Victoria and her mum practice phonemic awareness whenever they're reading her favorite rhyming books. They clap out the syllables in names("Vic-tor-i-a")or play word games, such as "I'm thinking of a word that starts with the letter E."

Young school-age kids need lots of practice reading to and with their parents. Try echo reading to build fluency: You read a passage and then let your child read one. Call your child's attention to punctuation and interesting words as you read.

2. Good readers have better vocabularies.

Think about the conversations you've had with your child today. There's a good chance that— because of the busy lives parents lead—most of the words you use are simple, immediate and directive. For example, "It's time to go now!" Especially on our busiest days, it's easy for parents to forget that kids look to us for varied and rich conversations. From Year Three on, kids need to learn about 3000 new words a year—that's eight new words a day. And it takes at least four exposures to make a word their own. To enrich your child's word power, try these ideas:

Tell stories about the past, present and future. At dinnertime, relate a story about your childhood or ask about an upcoming school event.

Encourage play. According to child development expert Sue Bredekamp, it's a crucial way for children to develop their language skills.

Read a variety of books--picture books, stories with rhymes, science or history books that convey cool new information. And engage your child in extended conversations about what you read together.

Experts cannot tell when earthquakes will occur. But they can tell us why they happen. In the center of the earth a huge, hot mass moves constantly, like rushing water. Vast areas of solid rock, called plates(板岩), rest on top of this mass. Sometimes two plates move and strain against each other. When they finally break, the earth's surface moves, and an earthquake begins. Some quakes have other causes.

Most of the world's earthquakes happen around or in the Pacific Ocean. Called the "ring of fire" by scientists, this area suffers from about twenty powerful earthquakes each year. But there are others even too small to be felt. They occur a million times a year. However, they take place under the ocean or away from people. Therefore, there is no damage.

Scientists measure the strength of earthquakes with sensitive machines called seismographs(地震仪). These instruments can record shock waves from earthquakes in any part of the world. Seismographs show us that some earthquakes can give off as much energy as 200 million tons of TNT. That is 10,000 times stronger than an atomic bomb!

Powerful earthquakes can sometimes take an enormous number of human lives. The worst earthquake on record took place in China in 1556. At that time 830,000 people died. In 1737, 300,000 were killed during an earthquake in India. In modern times, China was hit again with the world's second worst quake in 1976. It left 650,000 dead.

Many cities are taking steps to prevent loss of life in earthquakes. Buildings are being made quakeproof. Rescue teams practice saving victims. Partly because of such steps, the 1989 San Francisco quake took only sixty lives.

After flexing its mechanical arm and finding some puzzling chemistry in a patch of Martian
soil,the robotic rover Spirit began investigating the composition of a rock named Adirondack yesterday with two science instruments and a microscopic camera.

Following programmed instructions from flight controllers, the six-wheel rover made several short turns and moved forward about six feet. It stopped within inches of the pyramid-shaped rock, about the size of a football. It was the vehicle's second maneuver on the Martian surface since landing there on Jan. 3.

Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said they did not expect results of the first rock examination until early today. But they were already both pleased and puzzled over the soil test results.

"We're starting to put together a picture of what the soil at Gusev is really like," Dr. Steven W. Squyres of Cornell, the principal scientist of the mission, said at a news conference in Pasadena. He was referring to the Spirit's landing site in Gusev crater, near the Martian equator. Two of the Spirit's main science instruments, the M6ssbauer spectrometer and the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, made a close examination of soil near the landing base.

German scientists in charge of the studies reported that X-rays emitted by the surface soil indicated a chemical composition mainly of silicon and iron, with smaller amounts of sulfur, chlorine and argon. Argon is a noble gas that is part of the Martian atmosphere. Previous Martian sites visited by landing craft also contained significant amounts of sulfur and chlorine.

Other members of the project's science team said the M6ssbauer spectrometer found considerable amounts of the mineral olivine in the soil. Olivine, which contains oxygen, iron and magnesium, is often found in volcanic rocks. The Martian soil may resemble the volcanic soil of Hawaii.

"One possibility is that this soil is simply ground-up lava," Dr. Squyres said. "That would surprise me, but it's entirely possible that beneath .those grains there is solid rock and we are detecting some of that solid rock, not the s0il."

Another property of the soil perplexed geologists. The fine grains of the Gusev surface seem to stick together in dry clumps. Geologists suspected static electricity as the clinging force. If so, they said, the soil should collapse and flatten out when the M6ssbauer spectrometer pressed against the ground. Nothing collapsed, leading Dr. Squyres to ask what force was. responsible for holding them together.

It seems the art of survival-or continual positive projection-in the world of pop music th
ese days, depends very much on change. If artists fail to recreate their image--chameleon(变色龙)- like, over and over again--they risk facing accusations of dullness; that they are not fashionable.

It opens with the newish "I Want You with Massive Attack", a faintly morose and teary plea and quickly moves back in time to her earlier moments: "Crazy for You", "This Used To Be My Playground" and "You'll See". There is also a nice version of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". So this is more than an exploitative offering.

However, Chef's latest package, It's a Man's World’, cannot be reviewed proudly. In her past--the most memorable moment for this reviewer being her visit to a US warship amid cheering sailors for "If I Could Turn Back Time'-she has competed admirably. And she has demonstrated the classic features of the change syndrome(综合症). But this is a tired and dull Chef, Perhaps attempting to moderate her sexy and boy-crazy image in this session but failing.

W: Yes. For the first time ever the scientific community has established the existence of planets outside our own solar system. Of course we knew that certain distant stars existed, but only recently did we learn that several of them are orbited by their own planets.

M: Why did it take so long to locate these planets?

W: Well, you have to understand that they are a billion times dimmer than their parent stars. It would be like trying to see the light of a candle next to a huge explosion. We don't currently have a telescope that can be used to see them.

M: But if the astronomers didn't see the planets through a telescope, how did they find them?

W: By a very indirect method. The astronomers measured subtle distortions in the frequency of the light from the parent stars and observed that some of the stars seem to rock back and forth. They determined that this was caused by gravitational pull from orbiting planets.

M: There is a powerful new telescope being built in Arizona. Will that help them see these planets?

W: They should be able to see them at least in the form. of small spots of light. And then the scientists will be able to break down and analyze this light. By doing this, they hope to learn about the chemical composition of these planets--oxygen and ozone molecules, for example, would be telltale signs of life on these planets.
